For someone who spends a lot of time on their console, no, $400 and $500 isn't anything. For someone like you who spends most of their time on a more powerful PC, then no, I can't see the value there for you. Again, they're not marketing this towards PC players. They're marketing this towards console players who are looking to upgrade to a next generation console, not a PC. Again, you're only focusing on yourself and not the entire market.

As a console-only gamer these days, I am the market. I went away from PCs due to having to spend so much damn money to have a badass gaming PC.....continuously upgrading versus spending the console price once every 5 years or however long it has been. Spending that much on either of them isn't something I'm excited to do, but looking at the value I'd get for the feature set doesn't seem ludicrous to me, i.e. not just a gaming console of old like an old PS or Nintendo that ONLY does games.

Just have a feeling that alot of people aren't going to use it (other than apparently it being mandatory to be on), so it will just sit there.

A piece of equipment they wouldn't have purchased had it not been mandatory for the system to work or bundled in with the console at a higher cost.

If you really want to get people into using them, then offer it in the bundle without raising the price. Sure that's not money making business but I'd sure get one. Then start charging more for the bundle later on after word is spread.

Maybe I'm off base just saying from my perspective that's how they could get me to buy the console and try the Kinect. I can't even say I'd use it for turning on the console or anything else it does. My wife wouldn't give a shit if I said "hey watch this" and my son wouldn't either :D

Sony is very, very good at keeping all this stuff quiet. I've had 3 go out - all bluray drives. In all 3 of my cases, I was playing a game, the game froze and I had to reset the PS3. When it booted back up, the disc wont show up on the XMB and you can't play it. Virtually all of my friends have had this happen, too. Hell, one of them never got his replaced. He just buys games digitally off the store. :D

Considering all 3 of the bluray drive breakdowns were within a week of the warranty having expired, I've always kind of had this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_timer) in the back of my mind. One of the ones I have now is around 3 years old, though, so it appears I've finally gotten a good one. I also have a super slim as a backup.

Here's the thing, part of me thinks it'll be the week of the 19th, when the other launch titles are released, like Watch Dogs. It would be dumb to launch a title before it's launch titles are launched, unless the 3rd party publishers don't mind their games released early.

Black Friday is only a US thing but it is becoming an impromptu holiday up here in Canada. I suspect they will have staggered starts all over the world (North America, Europe, Asia, Oceana, etc.). I'm sure Sony is sweating over the amount of pre-orders they have to fill and a staggered stat will greatly help that out. I'm honestly okay with a later date closer to Christmas... it would encourage the wife to pick up Madden and FIFA. :D

PlayStation 4 reserves 3.5GB of its 8GB GDDR5 memory for the operating system, leaving 4.5GB of space for game code, according to current PlayStation 4 documentation shown to Digital Foundry by a well-placed development source. However, further sources suggest that an additional 1GB of "flexible memory" may be reclaimed from the OS reservation, based on availability.

Sony's internal docs say that 4.5GB is the baseline amount of guaranteed memory available for game-makers (note the memory usage of the Killzone: Shadow Fall demo) and most likely what the lion's share of launch titles will be using. However, other sources close to Sony indicate that developers can request up to an additional gigabyte of "flexible memory", and use it to boost elements of the game - but only if the background OS can spare it. We're told that incorporating this isn't trivial, and it may well be that to begin with only first-party developers target its usage.

Current PlayStation 4 dev kits have a "Game Memory Budget Mode" in the debug settings featuring two options: normal and large. The normal mode setting confirms that 4.5GB of memory is usable for game applications. The large mode increases this considerably to 5.25GB, but the docs are clear that the extra RAM here is only available for application development, presumably in order to house debugging data. From what we understand, the extra gig of flexible memory appears to work in addition to these allowances.

The news that the PS4's OS reservation is in the same ballpark as Xbox One's equivalent 3GB allocation is sure to surprise many, especially bearing in mind that previously leaked Sony docs have only spoken of a 512MB allocation for the system software - though this information hails from the era where the new PlayStation was slated to ship with only 4GB of memory.

"Current Sony SDK docs say that 4.5GB is the baseline amount of guaranteed memory available for game makers - and most likely what the lion's share of launch titles will be using."

There are many parallels with the Xbox One. Both consoles allocate two Jaguar CPU cores to the operating system, and what sounds like a disproportionately higher level of RAM than one might expect - especially in comparison to PC, where Windows operates perfectly well with less than a gig of memory at its disposal. However, in a world where even the Wii U reserves 50 per cent of its onboard RAM for the operating system, the big bump in PS4's OS allocation is perhaps not completely surprising. The console's leap from 4GB to 8GB has seemingly opened the door for Sony to be much more ambitious about what tasks the PlayStation 4 performs in the background and in parallel with gameplay.

Microsoft has already showcased Xbox One's abilities in this regard, but our sources say that PlayStation 4 is also capable of similar feats, perhaps in a manner more closely resembling that of PS Vita - the game is paused, apps are switched over seamlessly and, once exited, gameplay continues without having to restart the code. The convenience and functionality is undeniable, but it comes at a cost to memory consumption.

As it stands, both next-gen consoles will launch with 8GB of unified memory, but with a significantly diminished amount actually available to games developers. However, a big area of difference between Sony and Microsoft's approaches to OS allocation could come in their future plans for the reserved RAM. A Microsoft insider tells us that the engineers behind the Xbox One specifically chose 3GB in order to allow the background platform to evolve over a ten-year life-cycle - it's very hard to add features if the pool of available RAM is reduced from its initial level. The reserved RAM allocation there is set in stone, and is unlikely to change.

However, sources close to Sony suggest that the PS4 approach is perhaps more flexible - the current allocation in terms of both CPU cores and memory could be reduced once the operating system is complete and then streamlined. In short, while there is no guarantee of change in the future, Sony is at least leaving the door open to the opportunity and the R&D team has experience in reducing the OS footprint - just as it did on PlayStation 3.

In the here and now, the template is now set for the next-gen launch period, and the focus from both platform holders is that while games command the majority of system resources, supplementary services and apps are clearly very important indeed. Microsoft has already set out its stall in this regard - now it remains to be seen what additional features PlayStation 4 brings to the table above and beyond its core gaming functions.

From what I've read, 1GB of it is for future proofing. Sony screwed themselves over big time this past generation because there was no room left to incorporate features like parties and cross game chat, while Microsoft thought ahead and made sure they had enough room. From what I've read, both of them have left 1GB open for future updates.

Personally, I don't see how Sony's OS requires more RAM than Microsoft's does (which is running 3 OS), but it doesn't matter. 4.5GB of RAM is plenty.

I realize they're doing that for potential more good press over Microsoft, but it truly is dumb as hell. You need Plus to play online, which is where people are going to be using Cross Game Chat. You can play offline without Plus, but who is going to talk to someone while they're playing through a single player game? I mean, Cross Game Chat is an online feature. :D

I'm interested in seeing how the Cross Game Chat works personally. If it's as broken as it is on Vita, they can keep it.

I'm sure the rare instance will occur, but by and large, it's an online feature for communicating while in online or co-op games. I use it all the time for those 2 scenarios, but have literally never used it while playing a single player campaign. I'll do it while playing sports games, but when I'm playing single player campaigns, I want to listen to the game, not my friends talking over it.

To me, it's nice that it's not behind a pay wall, but it might as well be because the vast majority of the time it's going to be used when people are playing online.

Sony may be readying a hardware bundle that includes a PlayStation Vita handheld with its upcoming PS4, according to a report by Machinima (via VideoGamer.com).

According to "a well-placed, anonymous source", the package will reportedly go on sale before the end of 2013, and will retail for around $500. No additional details were made available. With the Vita currently retailing for $250 as a standalone device, and the standard edition of the PlayStation 4 priced at $399, a $500 pack would represent a significant saving for consumers.

Sony previously announced that all PlayStation 4 games will be playable on the company's handheld via Remote Play, though only games that have been "specifically programmed to allow such use of PS Vita" will be able to use the handheld as a controller for the home console.

GameSpot contacted Sony Computer Entertainment seeking confirmation of the rumour, but a spokesperson was unavailable at the time of publication.

However, it's being created by David Sears, who was the lead Creative Director for the first 2 SOCOM games (the only good ones). According to him, he left because he wanted to continue growing the series, while Sony wanted him to go in a completely different direction.

Point being, since it is David Sears, it's going to be a real SOCOM like game, not this trash Sony insists on putting out.

Nah, it's been over for awhile. However, they easily met their goal, so they've already begun working on the demo. Once they've got that finished, they can show it off to potential publishers (David already said there's a bunch of them interested - they just want a demo), and then once they get publisher support, full game production begins.

2015 is probably a realistic release period at this point.

When it involves David Sears and the word SOCOM, hell yes. I spent countless hours back on the PS2 days playing SOCOM and SOCOM II. In fact, I think I might still have SOCOM II laying around in a box somewhere. Some of the best and funnest shooter games I have ever played.

This. There's no game like SOCOM 1 and 2. The strafing gun battles are what I miss the most. The closest thing I've ever gotten to that is Gears of War shotgun battles, but even they're not quite as fun. In those games, if you sucked, you didn't have aim assist to help you out like today's games, or regenerating health so that you could just run away and heal. If you sucked, you got owned time and time again, which is exactly how it should be. Thankfully, it seems Sears is wanting to revive that style of play, and I can't wait. I've completely grown tired of today's shooters babying everyone and giving everyone a fighting chance with garbage like aim assist, low health, regenerating health, etc...

Hell, back on the PS2, I only played SOCOM and NCAA Football. Of course, both of those games were excellent at the time, so I didn't need to play anything else.

Doesn't matter if they camp. Camping is so ridiculous in Call of Duty because by the time you see them, they've already hit you twice and killed you. When you have to hit a person 5 or 6 times to get a kill, it isn't nearly as effective because you still have to maintain your aim. Plus, the gun hot system is making a return, so if someone is camping, you'll know when you get in their general vicinity.

A NeoGAF user by the name of “Nealand Liquor,” an employee of a “very large retailer” (verified by a NeoGAF mod) posted that he/she had received a product release schedule that indicated an “unnamed Sony console” will launch October 21.

Nealand Liquor explains that the “slim” versions of the Xbox 360 and PS3, as well as the Wii Mini, were listed as such, however the 3DS, Wii U and Vita were only listed as “Nintendo/Sony console,” respectively. This suggests that this “unnamed Sony console” is not a variation on an existing console of theirs.

The user goes on to explain that these release schedules are “designed to allow us time to create our instore merch plans.”

Launching the Playstation 4 on October 21 would place it weeks ahead of the Xbox One launch in November.

To me Sony's "dominating" MS in a PR war right now. Its like a Presidential Election:

1. Primaries - You play to the base (hardcore gamers) - Sony did that MS had an epic fail in this category

Once you have the primary battle locked up (which Sony does)

2. Slowly (but surely) go after the independents/casual voters (softcore gamers) - Sony is now doing this while MS is having to go back to the base and do another 180 every other week.

Yeah, really, lets just throw the whole Netflix crap out of the argument. Unless you're really fucking stupid and are going to buy a $400 console JUST to watch Netflix, or you only play single-player games and nothing but single-player games, you're going to be buying Plus for multiplayer. So in the end it'll be a total wash, paying for Live/Plus, and paying for your Netflix subscription. Only difference will be one side is technically on one side of the paywall and one on the other. But easily 90%+ will be buying Plus along with their PS4, so between Live/Plus and Netflix, it will ultimately be a wash.

I will judge it when I get my hands on it. The analog sticks look weird (and will be weird, because I don't care what anyone says, having them right next to each other is HORRIBLE for shooters), and while I appreciate they finally curved the triggers, it doesn't look like they're curved enough. Time will tell, but it should be a lot better than the miserable excuse for a controller we've had the past 7 years either way.

In order for the digital market to really take off (and kill the used game "problem") digital game prices simply have to be LESS than physical copies. I'd have to think about it but my gut tells me the sweet spot would be $45-$50 for Day 1 content downloads.

That gives you $10-$15 "discount" for losing the ability to trade it in. Most of my trades ins on average are right about there (some more some less).

You drop the price to $45 and I probably buy ALL of my games via phone/app/pre-order from PSN. (assuming HDD space isn't an issue)

Well, this works for PSN games, and PS+ freebies I assume. That way I can have them start downloading while I'm at work and they're ready to go when I get home.

Yeah he's certainly beating/finishing games faster than I do. Like I said it varies (obviously) but I usually get $10 - $15 from Amazon when I trade a game in.

This is really a math problem more than anything else so I'm sure someone much better at math than I am can figure out what the average re-sell value is for all consumers and then drop the price accordingly.

I think its safe to assume that's what most people are doing, when I trade hell thats what I do because its easier and faster than going the ebay route.

When I worked at gamestop they normally gave 30% of what they were going to sell it for ( and checking various other stores it seemed about on par with everyone else), so if they were going to sell it for 54.99 you would get around 16.00 (of course this varies on popularity and any specials), so based upon that the 40.00 to 45.00 tag is just about right.


Edit: Just faster Ebay is pretty fucking easy!

Not really. They can have it allowed for games and not allowed for movies and other applications. Xbox is doing just that. No excuse for it to not work on games.

Elgato uses HDMI, not component. Hauppauge uses component.No... the Elgato uses HDMI or an A/V cable. On one end it has Elgato's proprietary plugin to the device and on the other it has the PS3/Sony style A/V plugin like a component cable uses. It's the one in the front right of this image (laying with an HDMI cable)

You plug in to the component portion of the PS3 and then through the box or whatever something "magic" happens which allows you to use an HDMI input into your t.v./monitor. However, I don't think the box somehow magically turns the component signal into an HDMI one.

I think it's an HDMI feed, but Sony doesn't allow straight up HDMI game recording; which is why that converter box was needed in order to use HDMI.

There is one tidbit of info I haven't found anywhere and that is the HDD. (1) Is it easily replaceable like PS3?; (2) What specs for an HDD will we need to upgrade the HDD to a 1TB or larger size so I can keep all my games; movies; etc... on it without having to worry about it filling up?

I'm actually surprised that I have over 500 GB on my PS3 HDD right now just from PS+ alone and I've only been a member of it for a year.
