Microsoft's Don Mattrick defends Xbox pricing: 'We're delivering thousands of dollars of value'
Sony's $399 price point for the PlayStation 4 was one of several advantages it touted over Microsoft at E3. But Microsoft's Don Mattrick argues the Xbox One's $499 cost is, if anything, on the low side. "It's a lower number than some of the analysts had forecast," Mattrick told Bloomberg TV. "We're over-delivering value against other choices I think consumers can get. Any modern product these days, you look at it: $499 isn't a ridiculous price point. We're delivering thousands of dollars of value to people, and I think they're going to love it when they use it."
Discussing the Xbox One's virtues, Mattrick leaned heavily on the services it could provide, including access to the Xbox Live network and "living room" options like better TV integration or Skype communication. Sony's most radical addition to the PlayStation 4 is likely its Gaikai-based streaming technology, but that wasn't on display at E3, and Sony has positioned the PS4 as a simpler box for gamers who want better specs but the same basic feature set.
Some years back, Microsoft and Sony's positions were reversed: the Xbox 360 sold for $399, while the PlayStation 3 started at $499. Then-president Ken Kutaragi said Sony wanted "people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else," suggesting that they would want to "work more hours to buy one." Microsoft hasn't approached that level of hubris, but since neither console even has a hard release date, it also hasn't yet tested the claim that people will prefer its "devices and services" model.
The consumer does not seem to agree with Mr. Mattrick![]()
Every time that guy opens his mouth, something even dumber than what he previously said comes out. He's like a walking PR nightmare.
I don't get the buy it and you'll see approach.

The dude abides.
It's their own fuckin' fault for making a shitty console that REQUIRES a shitty peripheral that drove the price up to work. Hope they die just like Nintendo is dying.
Until console companies finally figure out that the same market that buys the majority of their entertainment on their fuckin' phone or a tablet is NO WHERE CLOSE to the same market that is buying their consoles, they are going to continue to be fucked by forcing dumbass peripherals on their consumers. The Wii was a blip on the console gaming map and not indicative of things to come. The Wii was successful because of how cheap it was and the fact that it came with some shit that grandma could play and think was a video game (Wii Golf was pretty fuckin' fun though). Nintendo software sales should be a crystal clear indication of why the Wii was successful. Everyone paid $150 for a Virtual Tennis, Bowling, and Golf game that anyone can pick up and play. They didn't pay $150 for anything else, as the Wii's software sales CLEARLY indicated.
So, fuck Microsoft and their hubris. Hope they get what they deserve for thinking they can peddle some Kinect bullshit onto people.
Amen! I've been saying the same thing for weeks with various comments here and there wishing for MS/Xbox One to just crash and burn or die out or something. People bitch about no competition with NCAA/Madden (no necessarily here, but in a great many other places on the web), and yet they wish for the same thing to happen in consoles. As I said before, do you really believe or think Sony would make massive, expensive upgrades to the PS4 (at a potential loss again like with the PS3) and sell it for a semi-reasonably low price if they were the only console in town? Hell no. They could go cheap with the parts, no make the big leap in technology and keep the price jacked up, because hey, who's going to stop them other than PCs?
Like I asked a couple days or week or two ago, are there was bunch of wars between people regarding brands of TVs? Brands of DVD and Blu-ray players? DVDs vs. Blu-ray itself? Brands of refrigerators? I have never understood why there is always this "us vs. them" with game consoles and how other people constantly try to force you to declare your allegiance to one or the other. It's just utter stupidity. It's called you buy what you want and be happy. I'll buy what I want and be happy. And we'll leave it at that.
I do not hope MS fails, I do hope they are forced to change the business model they have put before the consumer. The market pushing back is the only way any business changes/rethinks its models. In addition, if video gaming is a viable market and attractive to business I assure you that if MS "fails" and pulls out some one will correct their error(s) and get in the game. Whether that is Apple, Samsung or L.G. no one knows.
Personally, I'm still undecided. Right now if you'd ask me, I'd probably go PS4 at launch and then get the One when Titanfall comes out, however, that's always subject to change. I certainly don't wish for one of these guys to do so horribly that they exit the console wars. My friends are all major Sony supporters, and I've been telling them this for weeks: if Microsoft doesn't exist, there is ZERO chance the PS4 costs $399. If Microsoft didn't exist and if Microsoft didn't rip away nearly half of Sony's consumer base with the 360, we're getting a $500 or $600 PS4...guaranteed.
I think that depends entirely upon Microsoft. They're going to fairly quickly have to match Sony in price or pull the wool over consumer's eyes by offering a $299 box with a 2 year contract. Then they're going to have to get cracking on bringing exclusive games to their system. If they do what they did early in the 360's life, they'll be just fine. If they do what they did the last 2 or 3 years (focus on entertainment, Kinect, and maybe 1 big exclusive per year), they're going to get smoked.
That's IF people are accepting of the 24 hour check, mandatory Kinect, and then the really confusing stance on used games. Who knows, I personally think it'll at least sell well out of the gates but I think it's going to be in a big hole if the supply issues are true.
That is not even close to the case. While I think they completely flubbed it with the WiiU, it will still end up making them money in the long run. Once a NEW Mario and Zelda are released this will go back to normal (I might even jump on the bandwagon for a new Zelda). They have been living without full 3rd party support for a long time. Plus they also have a little trinket called the 3DS that sells a shitload in both hardware and software.

Yeah, I'm sort of reconsidering right now, if the overheating stuff turns out true. While I never personally dealt with any RROD issues with the 360, I heard plenty of stories about it. Ultimately, if I decide not to get the Xbox One on release, I may just completely put off next-gen altogether for a year or two like I had originally planned, at least until the next Halo comes out. Realistically, most games that I'll be buying this fall, I'd be buying for the 360 anyways, regardless of whether I got the Xbox One or not.
