I understand that but Microsoft has to understand that unless they sell this thing as a console first, who in the hell is going to buy it? I already have cable TV, internet access, a device to listen to music and an ability to play/watch movies. I don't need to pay $400+ for something to do that all in one for me.

I get pretty tired of the whining some devs do over used game sales. I've heard people comparing it to stealing. Give me a break. Does Ford sue used car salesmen for them selling a used car and Ford not getting any kickbacks? Do they demand profits back? No! And a big part of that reason is that the profit made from selling a used car is used to buy a new car. It's a win-win and I think the idea that if you eliminated all used video game sales that all that extra money ends up in the first parties hands is very flawed. I don't mind taking a chance and buying some games I'm not completely sure on because if they aren't that good my loss isn't as bad. That $60 game can be flipped for $30 or $40 and my real cost is less than $30. Having to pay $60 for a new game and never being able to sell or trade it means I become even more frugal buying games for both myself and my kids.
The bolded part is the reason I believe that used gaming will never go away. Developers can't reasonably expect gamers to continously buy the vast array of games that hit the shelves each year, without having the ability to unload old games to make way for the new. Unless these developers hit absolute homeruns with each new installment of game they release.

And what about sports title developers, such as EA, 2K, and SCEA who are contracted to release a yearly title? Do they really expect to incorporate enough new material to a game that would make a majority of their fanbase buy the new installment each and every year instead of keeping the one they have?

If, and I don't think it will happen, if used games go the way the dodo bird, then us gamers will likely be the biggest beneficiary in terms that each new installment of any game series would have to be significantly better than the previous in order for us to fork over another $60+

I agree CB. Take away used games and the new games will have to be great games or they will sell very poorly. People may also start taking years off from buying the annual releases (like sports games and COD). The rental market is still good. Movies are released and rented and everyone benefits there as well. If you denied people the ability to rent movies and force people to buy new releases the movie companies would take a hit in profit imo. Game companies are greedy when they look at the used game market as taking away their money without looking at the positives.

We'll just have to wait and see what their real plans are. If every game has a $10 re-activation fee it's not so bad. If the re-activation fee is much higher it becomes a big problem and not just for Gamestop.

Agreed, and I believe that is what we'll see, is basically re-activation fee for the game. Much line you had to buy the online pass for used games if you wanted to get online.

Used gaming has become a huge part of the industry now. I can't see developers eliminating that for reasons already stated, but rather finding a way to profit from it.

Since someone has been going buck nuts wild about the evil Xbox and and kinect spying on you and then the possibilities of having to pass information to the government if such a need were to arise. Well Sony has something similar and not a lot has been said about it other than it will be BUNDLED with the PS4, so it will play an important enough role to not be an add-on.

    Borrowed from wiki.

    PlayStation 4 Eye

The PlayStation Eye has been redesigned. It will include two 1280×800px cameras. The lenses will operate with an aperture of f/2.0, with 30 cm focusing distance, and an 85° field of view.[29] The dual camera setup will allow for different modes of operation, depending on the target application.[34] The two cameras can be used together for depth-sensing of objects in its field of vision,[35] akin to the Microsoft Kinect.[36] Alternatively, one of the cameras can be used for generating the video image, with the other used for motion tracking.[37]

The PlayStation 4 Eye will also feature a four-channel microphone array,[29] which helps reduce unwanted background noise and may even be used to issue commands.[34] It is tentatively set to be 186 × 27 × 27 mm (7.3 × 1.1 × 1.1 in) (width × height × depth), with a weight of 183 grams (6.5 oz).[29] It will record video in RAW and YUV (uncompressed) formats and will connect with the PlayStation 4 via the console's auxiliary port.[29] Sony plans to ship the PlayStation 4 Eye bundled with the console, rather than being a separate accessory.

The question is whether it will HAVE to be hooked up in order to play the console at all. If I can keep it unplugged for any game that I'm not using it for (I imagine most), then I'm good.

Well that is the $1,000,000 question now isn't it? There could also be games that force you to use the camera/microphone, since it is bundled with the hardware and available to the whole userbase. Who knows? Sony has not said anything.

Yep. There is a difference between forcing something to be always on and just including it. Sony is throwing in a headset too but I doubt you have to have it always on to play a game. Rather, its simply there when/if you want to use it. However, if Sony does the same thing MS is doing (recording you 24/7 and collecting data) I'm NOT buying either. It is as simple as that.

It wont be forced to be on and listening 24/7. That's the massive difference. I don't care that it's bundled. In the case of Kinect, I care that it's required for the console to even work, and more importantly, I care that the thing is listening to me 24/7 unless it is completely powered off.

But, in the remote 0.000001% chance that they do require it and it does constantly listen to you, then I wont be buying it, either.

I'm sorry but I have to laugh at all of you worried about Big Brother listening in your living room. Everything you do is monitored now anyway, what's one more thing?

Personally I could give two shits. If they want to listen and know that I'm talking about buying a new car and I start getting some ads for new cars or financing it's no different now. Hell we put our house up for sale and get tons of stuff about moving deals and lawn care people that can help make our house sell faster. Everyone sells your info fellas.

There is a difference between your info/interests being sold and you house being bugged.

There's a difference between knowing your information is being monitored and being able to control what information you put out there, and having no choice whatsoever and trusting that these companies will not drop the dime on you and my house gets raided because I rolled up some herb yesterday. It's the same reason I will never buy an apple product, make an itunes account, or buy one of those Samsung tv's. That camera and microphone is on all the time. Don't believe me just go into a best buy and wave at the tv. If they setup the camera it responds instantly. It's just one step closer to living in "1984".
