It was still working just fine and so far my Gears one has been great...no problems.

On the flip side, I had a launch PS3 die after a year a couple days. I had another fat model die after a year and a few days. I then even went as far as having a slim die after only a year and 5 or 6 days. It was the bluray drive each and every single time. That's one of the reasons I can't wait until Microsoft and Sony both start becoming more accepting of digital content delivery.
Yeah, I've had pretty good luck with my 360s. My first 360, the disc drive started going bad after a couple years, getting stuck and being a bitch to actually get to open up to remove or insert discs, but other than that, there were no issues with it. And no problems whatsoever so far with my new 360 slim that I got last year. Some of my friends with 360s have had 3 or 4 of 5 different 360s since launch.

I've always had a theory that while there were design flaws that caused overheating, a lot of the issues with 360s dying(especially 4 or 5 times or more) were user caused, aka not giving the back of the system enough room to blow air or even sitting the thing on carpet. I've always given all my systems plenty of room to breathe on a wooden surface and I've never, ever had any overheating problems of any kind. I think if people would actually learn how to take care of their shit, there would have been a lot less broken 360s.

I mean, I've heard of people going through 7 or 8 360s in a 5 year period. There's absolutely no way they're not doing something to break it themselves.

    Also, this thing is pretty!

I've only went through one PS3 and one 360. My fat PS3 got the YLOD, but I sold it for $150 on eBay. My first 360 was used, and two weeks later RROD'd, but the seller offered a 30 day warranty thankfully, and that other system is still kicking as I sold it to CDJ when I bought an Elite. I use an old school wooden TV cart to put both systems on.

    I'm technically on my 4th.

    • My first console I returned within 30 days because my USB ports wouldn't work.
    • I replaced my second one around the time slims were launched because I was afraid it was failing when it would freeze at the exact same spot on LBP every time despite every troubleshooting step, plus Gamestop was having a big trade-in credit.
    • Most recently I replaced my 3rd one last year because if I removed a disc, I would have to finagle with it in order to play a Blu-Ray disc and around that time Amazon had a good sale so I jumped on it.

Yeah, I've always kept my 360s off by themselves with my game collection on a wooden desk next to my TV/entertainment center. It's sitting on top so it's completely open air, nothing around it on any side, nothing that would cause it to overheat. Plus I have a floor fan in the same room that I almost always have running on at least low to keep air circulating and to just keep the room cooled down in general.

Did they have an update that increased the time it takes to install a downloaded game or something? It takes FOREVER for my games to install. I just installed a 108MB game and it took 2 minutes. I realize that may not sound like much, but for a file that small, that's a really long time. Anything over 1GB easily takes 15 minutes. Maybe it's because I haven't used my PS3 in awhile, but I don't remember it taking anywhere near that long to install anything.

I noticed this, but I was chalking it up to my new HDD.

Figured out my problem. It only goes that slow when I'm downloading something else while installing. That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, but okay.

Looked like a POS to me. My fatty has

    #1 larger hard drive
    #2 more USB ports
    #3 Backwards Compatible

I mean seriously who cares about the cheesy top loading disc and the "super slim" design? It's a F'n video game console that sits on my desk.

I don't like that top-loading disc at all. For one, my console sits in my TV stand without too much room above it. I could fit my hand & game in there, but it wouldn't be comfortable. Added, it gives it a cheap feel to it. I hope I never have to replace my current console. If so, I'll probably just pay the repair fee.

That spring loaded disc cover is going to be the first thing to break. That looks like a cheap piece of junk.

I don't like top loaders either. Better chance of ruining the lens. Especially if you swap out games a lot.

PS3 STILL doesn't ship with HDMI cables in the box? That is one thing I loved with the 360, I never owned a HDMI cable until I bought my HDTV back in 2008 and got my first 360, never had to worry about having to go out and buy one.

Agreed with you guys, that top loader looks horrible and looks cheap as shit. If you change games a whole bunch, guaranteed that ends up breaking at some point. And no backwards compatible? Yeah, screw that. If I were to ever buy a PS3, I'm going for one of the current ones, screw the super slims.

Lol just out of curiosity what do you guys think I could get out in the "free market" for a launch (i.e. "fat" but backwards compatible) PS3 with an upgraded 1 TB hard drive?

I gotta bet its prob (or at least "should") be worth more than this "super slim" PS3

I went through 1 PS3. Bought my original FAT one back in 2006 I believe? After 2 of my 360's crapped out.

My FAT one went out twice, once the beginning of this year and just recently about a month or so ago. Was able to fix it with no problem but still decided to get a new slim one 2 weeks ago.

Of course I took meticulously good care of mine, cleaning it out every so often, letting it "cool" a bit before shutting it down, etc. Although I didn't do that the entire time of owning it, probably the last 3 years or so.
