The last firmware update for the PS3, version 4.10, added an audio option allowing players to hear their own voice echoed through the new Wireless Stereo Headset peripheral. Since implementing the feature, Sony has heard some complaints; this new firmware update, version 4.20, will add new audio options.
If you're using a Wireless Stereo Headset, you will be able to either turn the functionality completely off, or you can select from one of five different levels of intensity, the PlayStation Blog says. Sony will also add an option for virtual surround sound when using the Wireless Stereo Headset to watch Blu-ray or DVD movies when the update drops tomorrow.
Other non-audio additions include more flexibility when setting how long before the system will shut itself down, and an the option to manage save files in bulk.
I decided to take the plunge and upgrade my PS3 hard drive. Bought a WD 320GB SATA drive since I heard/read that 320GB is the sweet spot for PS3 hd's. Also had to get a Seagate 500GB portable hard drive to do the backup. Wasn't too happy about that but I guess it beats getting a new PS3...I can also use the portable drive to automatically back up my laptop, since I lost mulitiple beats and various music files due to having 2 laptops crash over the years.
Escobar, I'll be curious about your backup/restore/upgrade results. I've been considering upgrading my HDD, but I know there are certain files that can't be backed up using the normal backup method, and so I'm a little hesitant to do it with as much data as I've got right now.

So it took longer than I expected buy my system was back up and running after about 5 hours. It took forever to take the screws off of the hard drive. They were a B*. After I got home from work was the first official time I decided to hop on and mess around after restoring the system. Just make sure you have the firmware update on your backup drive or you will have to wait to download it from the PC as the PS3 will not boot up w/o it.
Playing NCAA I had to redownload the online pass, but that was no problem. It seemed that the initial time files were read it took longer, but that could be from it trying to find the file in a different sector on a bigger hard drive. Once I accessed a file, subsequent times after it loaded up faster than when using the stock hd. My custom playbook however still maintained it's formations but introduced several blank spots which made it take alot longer to switch base formations (ie Shotgun to Pistol). Then came the freeze when I tried to do a formation audible on offense, so I cut the game off and will wait until '13 pretty much since I'm getting the Season Pass.
My trophies are going to take forever to sync so I still haven't done that yet, but when you play a game it syncs that games trophies to your system. Everything in XMB looks exactly the same as before on my old hard drive. Same themes and custom icons I set for my User logins.
I played Rock Band 2 and all my songs and DLC were still there (I heard there was a problem w/ copying copy protected files) but I think they fixed this issue with firmware 3.56 2nd release.
Had to start LBP under my 2nd account, because that's the one I dl'd it under for free. Once I did that I hopped back on regular account and all my progress was there along with my DLC and unlockables. They just re-registered as new/unused items with the green glow (no problem there).
All in all, very successful with no hiccups and no problems of missing dlc, game saves, or downloaded games that I previously read could be issues. It seems that games that run off the hard drive and reading files from the hd have improved speed/performance.
After playing the NCAA '13 demo it definitely runs faster and smoother. I loaded up the demo, went through the menus, and started the oregon vs usc game about 10-15 seconds faster than on my old hd. There were no stutters or pauses when loading menus like I had before...it was very much improved
Just so I'm reading you right, Escobar, you just did the normal backup/restore method? Nothing special? And you haven't noticed anything missing?

Correct. Settings>System Settings>Backup Utility>Backup
I got an invite to the Dust 514 beta, and although I really don't like the idea of "paying to win," I guess it wont hurt to at least try it out. I'll POSSIBLY be doing a live stream tonight if anyone is interested. If I do end up doing it, I'll post a link for anyone who wants to watch.
What did the Gold Box price end up being on those?
