Jonathan Vilma has been suspended for the entire 2012 season for his participation in the Saints' bounty program.

Man Seau was my favorite player growing up..still was, even over Jerome Bettis. Reason I wanted to play LB growing up and in HS. And why I wore #55.

    RIP

I think the NFL is going to have to consider mandatory retirement rules. You play X many games and/or X many snaps in games and you are done. This needs to be stronger for the guys that play in the box too. Some of these guys like Seau (and in the future Ray Lewis) play a violent position for too many years and games. The brain damage adds up.

We've had Seau and Dave Duerson die recently but there are quite a few more over the past while. It's sad and preventable. An absolutely huge and too expensive price to pay for a game. The new lighter contact CBA rules will help but these stories are awful.

It has nothing to do with hitting hard. It's for running a bounty program that was trying to injure players. If the NFL doesn't come down on this hard they open themselves up for lawsuits regarding player safety. With Seau's apparent suicide Vilma has even less support.

Don't forget that the NFL punishes guys depending on public opinion as well. The public thought Vick had served his time so he was welcomed back to the NFL. Donte Stallworth? The courts made their ruling but people were upset so the NFL suspends him an extra year. Goodell is the 3rd court of public opinion. A Lions coach in 2006 drives through a Wendy's naked and then gets a DUI a week later. He only got a 1 game suspension because it wasn't mainstream news. The NFL is all about protecting image and public opinion.

It's definitely safe to say that didn't hit the mainstream news. Even living in NW Ohio, I have no memory of ever hearing about this.

look, while i admit football is hard on the human body..it depends on the person..Nitchke and Butkiss have and are living pretty long lives along with so many others who were still alive many years after playing who played in a less padded era..yes, most of the early players didnt lead with their heads like the morons of the past 30 years...i dont know..dont feel like writing a whole thing on this ..LOL

Yeah. I guess the Lions suspended him for one game but still let him coach during practices. Then the NFL stepped in and got him for another game. I guess naked must have been one game and DUI another! No word on whether he asked Wendy's to supersize his fry.

Saying partial tear now from a conditioning run on Saturday. Says he hopes to be back by mid-season. Either way, a huge loss and almost guarantees Upshaw will get significant playing time as a rookie.

BTW, if you were a fan of ND, FSU, or UF, I think I might have to ignore your posts.

Ding ding ding! If you actually wrap up, you're much less likely to get a concussion. Still possible, but less likely.

Concussions are a problem in rugby, where players are forced to make good tackles, but not nearly the problem that the NFL has.

That's true Jeff but we can't simply assume concussions only come from big hits. Those are certainly a huge factor but I remember reading a report on helmet sensors where one kid got a concussion on a hit that wasn't even that big. He had taken two big shots earlier and was fine but this third shot (measured smaller than the first two) caused a concussion. There are cumulative effects and as we've seen with boxers, too many shots to the head lead to brain issues down the road.
