Patches are the worst thing that could have ever happened to gaming. Before 360/PS3 came out, I thought it would be brilliant to be able to fix certain things after the game came out, but all it has led to is a bunch of developers half assing the development on the game knowing they can go back after the game is released and try to fix it. EA, Infinity Ward, and some of Sony's first party studios are infamous for doing it.
Knowing they only had one shot at making the game good, developers on the older systems put forth a better effort to make sure the game functioned as it should. NCAA and Madden are two really good examples of this, and so is Medal of Honor, Rainbow Six, and the SOCOM series. All of those series lack a good bit compared to the games on the past generation of consoles.
