As much as I hate Gamestop, I do like having a physical disc. That said, Steam's success has shown there are plenty of people around who could care less about having a disc.
Yeah, I generally do like having a physical disc, but I have grown out of that as far as computer games. I have 50 games on my computer and it's so much easier just being able to fire any of them up within seconds through Steam than have to go pull out the disc(s) from wherever they may end up stored at over time. So I can definitely see myself becoming used to having no discs for Xbox.
Here's a thought. If these rumors turn out to be true, would games potentially be cheaper on Xbox? You won't have to deal with the costs of making and shipping physical discs and cases. It'd just be a matter of uploading the game on to MS' servers and the Xbox Live marketplace.
with new consoles..they should also design them for easier hook up..not having to worry about this wire or that wire or in/out what ever into the tv
Should they be? Yes. Will they? Doubtful.
I still think there is a huge market out there who want that physical disc to justify the $60 purchase. (Think parents, older gamers, people who play on multiple consoles, people with no/slow net, those who recoup cost by trading game in, etc.) For a while we will get games both digitally and physical, but I don't think companies are going to undercut brick & mortar retailers by selling them for less online. The middleman and physical packaging costs are gone, but they still have to pay something to MS & Sony to put them in the store - and they also get a commission/cut for each sale. Total digital distribution falls under the category of a 'perfect world' item. On paper it sounds perfect, but in reality there are still a ton of hurdles to overcome.
My best bet is that Microsoft and/or Sony make a push so that all games are available digitally on their next console at launch, however they will still have physical media also available as an option. If they're smart, they'll offer the digital version either a few days earlier or make it $10-$20 less than the physical copy.
Yeah, if the digital version was even $10 less than the physical copy, hell, I may like having an actual case and disc on my hands, but I'm fine with no disc or case for $40 or $50. :D
Big companies never think, "hey, let's pass the savings on to the consumer."
Full versions of games are downloadable now for $59.99. I'll believe that they'll be cheaper when I see it. If anything, my guess is that games jump to $69.99 on the next generation of consoles.

And if games get to that point, it could just end up being the point that puts me right out of gaming. Paying $300+ for a console is bad enough, but paying nearly $100 just for a game is getting fucking ridiculous. I've made due with $60 for this generation, but if it gets to $70, then either I'm retiring from console gaming and going solely PC gaming, or I'm going to become ultra anal conservative with my game buying and only get the games I absolutely 100% know I will play regularly, which means new series and games will never have a chance with me.
You guys are missing the #1 reason that the pricing will stay EXACTLY the same no matter how the software is handled. The new technology makes games more expensive to make. I am just waiting for Activision's CEO to come out and discuss a $69.99 retail price. Remember they were the ones that made the push for $59.99 this generation. They will add that ad revenue is not bringing in as much as expected, etc, etc, etc.
Well, like I said, if shit hits $70 and higher, new games and companies are going to get almost NO support from me. I'm going to stick to what I know and enjoy at that point, and am going to transition to almost exclusively PC gaming. I have 50-60 games or so sitting on my entertainment shelf for 360. I have 50 games installed on my laptop right now. That will easily grow to over 100 in the future if prices keep going up. There are easily hundreds of computer games I could get and would probably enjoy that I can get all for $40 or less. Add in Steam sales with shit priced in half or games under $10 or $5, hell yeah, so long Sony and MS.
Here is example #1 of why I may start steering more towards PC gaming if game prices increase with the next-gen consoles. MLB 2K12, just came out last Tuesday, $59.99 for PS3/360, $29.99 for PC on Steam. Highest priced PC game I've seen on Steam is $49.99. If console prices reach $70 or higher in the future, console gaming for me will be all but dead except for the very few handful of games that would be meet my levels of expectations and have sky high replay values, and it'll be almost nothing but PC from then on.
Yeah, I've made a couple of game buys that I had never given any thought of buying or had even noticed existed until after seeing them on sale for insanely cheap on Steam and Amazon. A sale for PS3 or 360 is considered good or great if it makes it down to $35 or $40. A PC sale, shit, that stuff can reach down to $10 or $20, and lower for some of the slightly older games. PC definitely wins out and is cheaper. Only thing keeping me on consoles is I'm so used to playing games with a controller and would never be able to play another shooter, fighting/adventure or sports game as I just can't do it well at all with mouse and keyboard.
And just looking through my wishlist on Steam, yeah, completely blows consoles out of the water. I have 16 games in my wishlist that I plan to buy for PC. Total prices (at this moment, will most likely drop more as prices on various games continue dropping over time) would be $329.44 for all of them. Comes out to $20.58 per game. Buying $60 games for consoles, I'd get 5 games total. I'd get 6 games for games priced $50. 8 games for games priced $40. PC just destroys the consoles in prices. And if the consoles go up to $70 or higher, PC is going to start getting more of that money that consoles currently get.
See, I'm the exact opposite. I HATE playing anything that's not a fighting/adventure/sports game with a controller. I can't stand playing shooters with a controller. It's the most imprecise thing I've ever experienced.
But, for those like you that can't stand to play them with keyboard and mouse, most all PC ports of these shooters supports using a controller and if you have a wired Xbox 360 controller, it's plug and play with those games.
The ONLY issue is game companies fucking PC players by not supporting their PC ports of games as well as their console ports (I'm looking at you motherfuckin' 2kgames) or just not getting the game until much later on the PC. Doesn't happen often, but it's a real bitch when it happens with a game that you are enjoying/looking forward to.
Yeah, I've only got wireless controllers, but I'll have to look into getting a wired one solely for PC. It's not so much that I hate using the mouse and keyboard, it's just that I suck ass at remembering which letter does what and hitting the right letters and buttons and right mouse movements in the heat of the moment, especially some of these games with half the keyboard assigned to commands in the game. Like hell I'm gonna be able to remember every individual command tied to a letter. :D
E3 just got less exciting. Wii U gets the stage to itself.

After numerous leaks and suspicions about its alleged new console, Microsoft has issued an official statement regarding the future of Xbox. "For us, 2012 is all about Xbox 360-and it's the best year ever for Xbox 360," the company said in a statement. The Xbox 360's mega-success means we absolutely, positively will not see or hear about the Xbox 360 successor at E3.
"While we appreciate all the interest in our long-range plans for the future, we can confirm that there will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon," Microsoft told IGN.
Pfft. E3 is lame as hell anyway.
:)
Seriously though, I rarely ever even watch anything from E3. It's always little snippets of stuff, it's never anything truly GOOD when it comes to brand new games coming our way and anything that is shown really well is usually immediately leaked online as well.
Therefore, I have no need to waste my time actually paying attention to any of the E3 coverage. Before the internet was so all-encompassing, it was better, but E3 hasn't really done much for me in years.
Oh, I've never watched it on TV. I'd look at stuff after the show was over. I certainly never saw a point in actually watching the streaming coverage of it like some people do. There's never anything THAT important at one of the shows.
Really, though, I just don't gush over video games like I used to because there are few video games coming out that I'm head over heels for anymore. Borderlands 2 might be good. Diablo III might be good. Besides that, I'm really meh about everything else anywhere close to coming out soon.
I never watch the live stuff but like Darius said there is a lot of good info that pops up. I just go to gametrailers and get all the E3 stuff I need, which is video footage of games.
Mors hates darn near everything and would probably find something to complain about in regards to booth babes, cotton candy and the sun rising. :P
Leaked document says X-Box 720 to come out in 2013 and retail for $299. Doc mentions Kinect glasses, OnLive acquisition, Blu-Ray compatibility, and more. The doc dates to 2010 so some plans may have been ditched/changed.
Interesting. If that all is true, sweet, blu-ray finally.
...and a nice price.

On the surface, agreed completely. However, is that the price no matter what or is that the starting price similar to what we have now, with different prices for different hard drive sized consoles? I haven't read the document they had in the story yet, so if the answer's included in there, I'm not sure.
I find it hard to believe that is a legit price (unless you are buying a completely watered down version that is no better than the 360). However, MS's strategy to beat Sony to the market could once again all but seal the deal in the next "console war".
I read a few year's ago when talk of the next-gen was in it's infancy that Sony and Microsoft were going to take cues from Nintendo in the next cycle in not giving us the latest and greatest tech because they saw Nintendo be successful with really old hardware and both companies took a bath for a few years just to get market share while Nintendo made profit on every single Wii.
That worked for Nintendo because they went after casual players and families. That will not work for Microsoft and Sony simply because the majority of their customers fall into the "core" category in which graphics do actually matter.
I also don't see Microsoft being able to release a console for that price. If they do, though, they will all but assure outselling Sony in the next generation again because we all know that whatever Sony launches, it'll initially cost an arm and a leg. But as mentioned, that document is 2 or 3 years old, so chances are things have changed.
So I finally got around to finishing reading all 56 pages in that document on the 720. If MS can pull off all that they talk about in that document and do everything they want to do, goddamn. The PS4 will have to give you a blowjob while you play for Sony to keep up with MS in the next-gen if MS pulls all that off.
literally or virtually?
