That's where I'm in luck, at least with Xbox One. With Kinect, I need only say "Xbox Rewind", "Xbox Pause" and "Xbox Play" and I'm good to go. :D
But, I do remember having to continuously wake up my controller on 360 to pause or rewind, so I can see where it would come in handy in that case.

Anybody get the new update yet? I just looked up the numbers online and on my console, my OS version is still showing as the previous update. If it had started rolling out yesterday, I'm surprised it hasn't shown up on my console yet. Usually it shows up without hours of being released for my consoles (360 and One).

Do you have it on energy saving mode or instant on? If you put it on instant on and then turn the console off, it'll automatically start downloading it after a few minutes. Mine did so last night.
SmoothPancakes
03-05-2014, 07:49 PM
Yeah, I have it on Energy Saving. I'll have to give it a try. I just figured it would prompt me to install the update as soon as I turned on the console (like it did in previous updates), but I've turned it on probably three different times since yesterday and nothing has popped up yet. When I get done on the One, I'll switch it and see if it downloads.

03-05-2014, 09:03 PM
What I do is switch it over to energy saving, turn it off, flip it back on and change it back to instant on, turn it off. I'll wait about 5 or 10 minutes and then the light on the Xbox One will start flickering. Turn it on and you'll see the green status bar. This one was much quicker than all the other ones - took maybe 5 minutes. Everything is much smoother and the friend's list/party system is much improved.
They've been teasing external storage coming in April, so hopefully that's true. Aside from the ability to stream media from a PC, they've implemented most of the stuff I was missing from launch.
SmoothPancakes
03-06-2014, 01:26 AM
Well, you were right. I switched my power mode to Instant On, turned it off to watch some shows recorded on my DVR earlier tonight, and within 5 minutes the light was flashing, presumably downloading the update. I haven't turned it back on yet to confirm, still in the middle of a show, but I assume that's what it was as I've never seen the light flash before now.
Still at a loss though as to why that is. Two days in a row of getting on my One, turning it on multiple times in those two days, and it never once prompted me for an update. But the instant I turn it to Instant On, which enables automatic updating, 5 minutes later it's updating. Rather odd to me.

It's because in instant on, when you turn it off, it immediately looks for available updates. I don't know how power saver does it. Hell, instant on wont work for me unless I turn the power saver on, turn the system off, then turn instant on back on and power off. It's really dumb. There should be just an update button that allows you to search for an available updates.
It fucks up matchmaking in games, too. I couldn't connect to anything last night on Garden Warfare, and I know it's because I was one of the early ones to get the update and no one else had it.
Oh well, hard to be mad with Dolby Digital support finally. I forgot how good it sounded. :D

Well, I'll have to remember that in the future. I prefer to keep it on Power Saver, so next time an update rolls around (hopefully you're right about April and the external storage), I'll just throw it onto Instant On and wait for it to find the update.
Now just to wait for the update to the Twitch app, supposed to by Tuesday to coincide with Titanfall, so I can try out broadcasting on Twitch (with Titanfall as my first experiment at it).

I had an account set up as SmoothPancakes, but for some reason it kept constantly jumping from Twitch to Justin.tv when I tried to go into my settings or channel. So I said fuck it, deleted the account, and created a new one called SmoothPancakes1. He spouts incorrect information in the 2nd paragraph. It is not being outsold 2:1 in the US. Hell, it's not even 2:1 worldwide and that's with Sony having launched in a lot more countries. Sony announced 6 million worldwide sales just a few days ago. Microsoft hasn't updated their numbers to my knowledge since early this year to say they sold 3.2 million consoles in 2013 alone.
Unless they've sold 0 consoles since then, it's not 2:1. Considering the Xbox One is selling by far best in the US, it's safe to say it's also not even close to getting outsold 2:1 in the US.

Headset question:
Bear with me, as I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but merely would like some feedback.
I want a headset in order to play games, movies, and streaming shows at night without disturbing the family. I don't play MP much, but will with Titanfall of course. So I'm thinking about one of the new Xbox One headsets, so they run off the controller which means it has be active for any of those activities. Not a big deal. Obviously I'd have chat functionality with those.
My other option would be to get the XB1 headset adapter, and I could listen to audio on any of those activities with headphones of my choosing but would not have chat functionality or control.
Other option would be a separate wireless headset that runs through my receiver, independent of the controller. But have to deal with recharging it and obviously no chat functionality either.
I have that right, correct?

Yeah, that's about it. Any wired headset that you plug into the adapter will get audio through the controller. If it has a mic, you'll also *PROBABLY* get voice capabilities. There are some headsets that don't work that way, though.
Some wireless headsets would work with chat, but only the ones like the Astros that require you to run a cable from the headset or mixamp to the controller. With that setup, you'd have optical from the mixamp to the Xbox One, and then a chat cable from the headset to the adapter on the controller.
My setup (when I find an adapter) is going to be like that. I have the Astro A40s, so right now I have an optical cable going from my mixamp to my Xbox One. It's a wired headset, so then I have a cable connecting my Astros to the mixamp for game audio. When I get the adapter, I'll just have to run a separate cable from my mixamp to the adapter and I'll get audio from my optical (since it's surround sound and the adapter isn't) and I'll get chat from the adapter.
It really just depends on how you want to do things and how much you're willing to spend. Just to be clear, though, ANY wired headset plugged into the adapter will at least give you game audio through the controller. If it has a mic, it might allow voice.

So, how is Titanfall smooth, IOU??
Addictive as hell. I played probably 6 hours straight in the campaign yesterday, which being a multiplayer campaign, that's probably the longest I've played a true multiplayer game not named Halo since probably Modern Warfare 2. I can't even play COD MP anymore because of lag and all the camping and other douchebaggery. Halo, I still have fun in my primary modes that I prefer to play. Titanfall? Playing a full multiplayer experience, holy fuck is that a fun game.
It really does well to deter camping, camping will not help you in Titanfall. And with all of the directions you can go, both on the ground and up on top of buildings by way of wall running, it truly opens up the entire map. You're not just limited to where you can go on the ground like in COD. You can wherever you want to thanks to wall running. If you want to get the vantage point of being up on the roof of one of the highest buildings in the map, there's a way to get there thanks to wall running, you just have to find it. The entire map is opened up to all out warfare, both vertically and horizontally.
And nothing gets more fun than calling in your Titan and going stomping around the map stepping on everyone and melee'ing them with your gigantic ass fist of steel. Titanfall is easily a game that I will play for years. It as joined Halo in tied for first place as my favorite game series, and I've only had it for one day.

Halo sucked. Never got the appeal. :)
Titanfall is wicked fun. I only had time to play for about 1.5 hours last night, and that was the most MP online I've played of anything in over a year for sure and the longest I've played in random online lobby stuff in over 2 years at least.
The pace is frenetic, but you can also "sneak" around by the wallrunning and getting to vertical highpoints. Dropping down on Titans or escaping if you are in trouble works well. The Titan execution is entertaining.
I can see playing this game a LOT, plus it was easy to load into and get into games, plus they ran smoothly.

I love dropping down on Titans. I jumped on Titans for the Rodeo challenge probably 30+ times in the couple hours I was playing yesterday. It is so FUN to be playing as a pilot, jump into the back of a Titan, rip open it's access panel and sit there unloading your gun into it and heavily damaging and/or destroying it. And that's the thing I love, it's so balanced. Instead of having Titans being these unstoppable things that you can only destroy with another Titan, it's possibly to destroy a Titan while running around as a pilot by doing the Rodeo maneuver. Titans can squash pilots by simply walking/running over top of them or using melee on them, and pilots can destroy Titans thanks to Rodeo. The balance of this game is amazing. Something COD could only dream of.

Some of the features of April update:
What’s new in this release?
*Game and app saves and updates. A game save progress bar will show you the status of your game saves. You will also be able to easily tell what games and apps are being updated or have been updated recently.
*Friends improvements. Notifications will be added to see when favorites and friends sign in to Xbox Live. This actually was one of the most frequently requested features from the first preview wave and we made it a priority to include it in the April update. Also, friends who are in multiplayer will be identified in the friends list. We’ll also add the ability to view friends’ most popular apps.
*Blu-ray 50 Hz video output support for content recorded at 50 Hz will resolve video playback issues some Xbox Live members in Europe are experiencing.
*Kinect voice and motion improvements will continue to fine tune the quality and reliability of Xbox One commands.
*Improved GameDVR video quality through compression algorithm improvements.

If you're going to, do it soon. The code takes $50 off and the price is supposed to be $499. For some reason, the code still works but it's priced at $449, so the code is taking it down to $399. Damn good deal. Hopefully a good many people take advantage of this. It's a great system.

Hell yeah, doing it right! You'll love it, I guarantee it.
I had the same problem with my Xbox. Laying horizontally, it's a good 3 inches longer and almost double as high as the PS4. Then you have Kinect. I ended up just buying a mount and mounting the Kinect to my TV, which works great. I highly recommend that if you can find the mount for cheap.

And I'm gonna be the same way in a month or two when I get my tax return money and pick up a PS4. I had to do some serious rearranging just to make room for my Xbox One, and I have not a damn clue where the hell I'm gonna fit a PS4 in. And my HDMI ports are non-existent at this point. My TV only has 3 HDMI ports, which means I'll either have to plug my TV or feed my Xbox 360 in via the pass-through on the Xbox One to free up one slot. And then I'll have to leave my blu-ray player permanently disconnected and use the PS4 or Xbox One to watch blu-rays.

If you still game on the 360, you can't pass it through the Xbox One. There's a solid 1 or 2 second delay and while it doesn't matter when watching TV, it's VERY noticeable when playing a game. But if you don't game on it, that would work.

Surprisingly, I've never noticed a delay. I've passed my 360 through a couple of times now, and I've never actually seen any noticeable delay. Even playing something like a shooter or sports, it's always been instant feedback to what buttons I was pressing.

I don't. However, I don't have cable. If I had cable, I'd probably do it, just to keep an eye on sports and that's about it most likely.
And I haven't felt the need to get a PVR/digital box in order to do it with OTA TV through the XB1, although people do and it works. There is a particular box that people are buying that supposedly works pretty well with the XB1 OneGuide TV setup.

I use all of the features including running my TV through it. I absolutely LOVE that I can say "Xbox, On" and it'll turn my Xbox on, my TV on, and then tune it to the correct input. I also love that I can say "Xbox, off" and it'll turn everything off. During March Madness, I was often playing Titanfall with a game snapped and watching that at the same time. Hell, you can even say "Xbox, volume up/down" and it'll do that, too. The voice commands and integration with everything is one of it's most underrated features, but they're features I SORELY miss when I'm gaming on PS4. Snap, particularly, is an amazing feature. Suspend/Instant Resume is also an amazing feature...can't wait until Sony gets that implemented.

Yeah, I said I should feel ripped off, but I really don't. I love my Xbox. I know the resident troll is just going to latch on this every chance he gets, but I've got infinitely more entertainment value out of my Xbox than I have my PS so far. It very simply has the better games right now.
By the way, if you like fighters, you owe it to yourself to download Killer Instinct. You get one free character which rotates every month, so you can get a good feel for it before you buy. I hate fighters but this is so damn smooth and good looking that I've found myself enjoying it and spending the $20 on the full game. :D

I absolutely LOVE that I can say "Xbox, On" and it'll turn my Xbox on, my TV on, and then tune it to the correct input. I also love that I can say "Xbox, off" and it'll turn everything off.
That is pretty cool feature, but one that I don't use. Because I use a Harmony remote and everything is run through my receiver. Don't feel like I'm missing much of that feature although they get credit for having it.
During March Madness, I was often playing Titanfall with a game snapped and watching that at the same time.[/quotes]
That is one feature I do feel I'm missing out on, especially when football season rolls around. There are a lot of games I'm somewhat interested in, but not enough to not play a game or do something else while it is on, so it would be cool to be able to have it up there.
[quote]Suspend/Instant Resume is also an amazing feature.
Agreed.

Pretty sure I figured it out. He's actually a huge Xbox fan, but he's just using reverse psychology to annoy people and drive them to trying out the Xbox in order to boost it even further, as well as strengthen the existing Xbox users' reasons for liking the system and games.

Nope, it comes with regular batteries. Play and charge kit sold separately for like $25. It's worth it just to get the USB cable, which unlike past versions, turns your controller into a wired version when you plug it in and reduces latency. You also do not need batteries or the battery pack as long as it's plugged in.

Ability to upload clips directly to YT comes tomorrow.
Game DVR and Upload are among the most used apps on Xbox One. We know how important it is to be able to easily watch and share video clips, and starting tomorrow we’re rolling out an update to the YouTube app on Xbox One that integrates Game DVR and Upload with YouTube**, making it easier than ever to capture and share game clips with the world.
Now, use Game DVR to capture epic gaming moments, edit them in Upload Studio, and, with the simple click of a button inside the YouTube app (look for My Uploads**), share them instantly to your YouTube channel. The updated YouTube experience also allows you to watch YouTube videos in Snap Mode, add individual YouTube videos to your Pins, earn Media Achievements, and add your YouTube channels to OneGuide for instant access to YouTube videos right next to your favorite TV listings or App Channels.

From Major Nelson:
Tonight, we will begin rolling out the next Xbox One system update. Again, I’d like to thank all of the Xbox Live members who previewed features with us and shared some of their feedback. Their input helped shape this system update, and we look forward to expanding our list of previewing Xbox Live members in the coming months.
Here’s the final breakdown of the features rolling out to Xbox One systems starting tonight and over the next few days:
Game and app saves and updates. A game save progress bar will show you the status of your game saves. You will also be able to easily tell what games and apps are being updated or have been updated recently.
Friends improvements. Notifications will be added to see when favorites and friends sign in to Xbox Live. This was one of the most frequently requested features, so we made it a priority to include it in this update. Also, friends who are in multiplayer will be identified in the friends list.
Kinect voice and motion improvements will continue to be fine-tuned for quality and reliability of Xbox One commands. For example, we’ve updated some of the gesture functionality to reduce false positives on non-hand objects triggering gesture commands.
Improved GameDVR video quality through compression algorithm improvements.
Blu-ray player supports 50 Hz video output for content recorded at 50 Hz. We’ll also be updating the Blu-ray Player app in the coming days to round out these improvements.
Controller and headset adaptor firmware updates will reduce audio static and improve wireless connectivity.
Silent reboot after system updates and system update on demand now available. If your console is in Instant On mode, the update will happen automatically and return to standby upon completion. This means you won’t need to power on your console after an update moving forward. If you want to take future updates when available without waiting for your console to do it on its own, we’ve added this option under system settings and you’ll be able to use it next update. It will only show as available when there is an update to take.
Thanks again for everyone’s feedback on particular features previewed these past few months and keep the feedback coming.

You can usually force it by switching your system over to instant on (or power saver, power off, then instant on, then power off and wait) and turning the system off and waiting. I haven't tried it yet, but that's how I've got previous updates to go through.
Good update, though. Here's to hoping for external storage support in May's update (and that there's no limit on the external storage drive like what there is on 360). I'm starting to run low.

Alright, I'll have to switch it. I think mine is still in instant on since the last update, I never switched it back.
I'm definitely looking forward to the friend notifications coming back. It was getting a little repetitive having to constantly pull up the friend's list to see who was online and who was doing what, especially when I'm waiting for one or two specific friends to get online. I would have no clue when they get online other than only by pulling up the friends list.

Nope. Only way to tell is under system information where it'll have 1404 instead of 1403. You'll also be able to change your notification preferences under preferences in settings. This is the last update that follows a staggered release. Some people got it last night, some will get it today, others will get it tomorrow. By the way, during the last beta update for the April update, we were able to invite friends to be a part of the preview program. I invited Smooth, Austin, and JB, so if you guys get some kind of message, that's why. It's not a guarantee to get in, but once you're in, you'll be able to preview ALL future beta updates, presumably starting with the May update preview, which should be coming relatively soon. You do not have to accept it and if you do, you can always unregister within the app.
Just thought I'd give you guys a heads up. I sent it a few days ago so it'll be at least another few days before you get a message on Live, possibly even not until they start rolling out the new update. I figured some of you guys might be interested, so I just invited you all instead of asking.

It's not about the admins "needing to grow a spine" you guys are grown men and this site has been able to police itself for the four years it's been in existence.
Since in this case it's not working.....CLW, it's time to quit trolling. Post articles, fine....but you should know what is crossing the line. If not, then we can look at other avenues.
As for the invite, thanks IoU!
I just bought Powerstar Golf with my $20 credit I got in the Newegg deal for Arkham Origins. Really digging it. It has a ton of social aspects that lack in Hot Shots.

It depends on if they pulled the garbage they did with the 360. You could use external storage on the 360, but it was limited to 16 or 32GB, can't remember which. They've only said they're going to support external storage - they never said it would be without limits. I'm cautiously optimistic they don't limit it and allow us to use as much as we want.
But yes, in theory, as long as you have one that supports USB 3.0, it'll just be plug and play and you'll see no noticeable performance differences.

Yeah, I have less than 40GB left. I don't understand how Microsoft and Sony make requirements that every game be installed and then give us puny 500GB hard drives.
Pretty sure the May or June updates will include the external storage for Xbox, though, so relief is in sight...hopefully.

Yeah, I don't see why there would be any performance issue. I keep every one of my Steam and PC games on an external drive to free up hard drive space on my laptop. Never had an issue at all.
As for me, I have almost no free space left. I own Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag, FIFA 14, Madden 25, NBA Live 14, NBA 2K14, Dead Rising 3, Forza 5, Ryse: Son of Rome, Thief, Call of Duty: Ghosts and Titanfall.
Between that and various DLC for the games, hell. I doubt I have more than 50 GB still free.

It was a fun little romp but nothing too difficult. Getting 750,000 in the Trials was the most time consuming due the level they chose. I like the new character and power but online there is no way I would use her/it? Luna is the most powerful for the majority of the levels online, provided you are good at taking out all but one of the orange pegs in a short time. Gnorman would be a distant second online and Windy Whatever It is would be a close third.

They're both going to get the exact same games outside of 1st party games sooooooo it doesn't really matter who wins.

It depends on games. We wont know Xbox One's true selling potential until they meet Sony on price and get the heavy hitters out like Halo and Gears. Sony has MORE exclusives, but asides from Gran Turismo, none of them have the selling power of Halo.
But as you said, it really doesn't matter. Both of these consoles are selling at a faster rate than their predecessors, so they're all winners - even Nintendo with the way their handhelds sell.

Coming Soon: New Audio Controls and Opt-In Setting to Help Improve Voice Recognition (http://majornelson.com/2014/05/02/coming-soon-new-audio-controls-and-opt-in-setting-to-help-improve-voice-recognition/)As part of our ongoing effort to bring new features to our Xbox fans worldwide, we’ll begin rolling out more features to folks in our early access program beginning this week and we’re looking forward to their feedback before shipping the system update to all Xbox One owners in May. We hope you’ve been enjoying our most recent Xbox One system update that rolled out last week and we look forward to bringing you even more great features in the months ahead.
Feature highlights for this next phase of our early access program include a new sound mixer for snapped apps, chat volume controls when using Kinect and the option to help us improve speech recognition. You can also take this update on demand as soon as it becomes available if you’d like.
Sound Mixer for Apps with Snap and Volume Controls When Using Kinect with Chat
We’ve received great feedback from fans asking for more control over audio levels and background sound. As a result, under Settings we’ve added two new features for controlling your audio options. With the new Sound mixer, you’ll be able to control the volume levels of two apps when you’re using Snap letting you decide which app is louder. In this same section, you’ll also be able to control the volume levels when you’re using Kinect for chat.
https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2906/14081369541_95e8266e32_z.jpg (https://www.flickr.com/photos/majornelson/14081369541/)
Opt-In to Help Improve Speech Recognition
Being able to control your Xbox One with voice commands can be a magical moment and we want to continue making this great for all Xbox One owners worldwide. The more voice samples we have to input into our algorithms, the better and more responsive Xbox One can be to our fans. If you want to help us in our efforts to make voice and speech improvements for Kinect even better, you can opt-in to a speech data collection. Under Settings, then Privacy & Online Safety, go to Customizing privacy and online safety and set Share Voice Data to Allow. This is completely optional and all voice data shared via this setting will be used for product improvement only.
Take the Next System Update When You Want
You’ll now also be able to take this next system update as soon as it’s available if you want. When this update is made available, you’ll find the option under Settings, then select System update as shown below.

As always, we’re thrilled with our fans’ enthusiasm about our Xbox One system updates and we’re really excited about what’s coming in the next few months. We look forward to hearing your feedback about these latest features in our early access program and will roll them out to everyone worldwide in May.

Now, while I'm sad nothing on external storage this month, I AM happy about the sound mixer. I hated not being able to control whether I had my game or whatever I was watching on cable when I had my TV hooked up to the One as the louder volume. I either had to mute all sounds and music in the game I was playing, or I had to go without hearing or understanding anything being said on TV. I like being able to control via the mixer which one is louder and how much louder, so I can mix and have sound from both, instead of picking just one in an all or nothing format.

I don't know about panic mode considering they're trending to outsell the 360. They just needed to meet Sony in price so that the sales gap doesn't continue to widen. I do not agree with removing Kinect, though. It's the thing that separates you from the competition. Oh well. I've got my voice commands so I don't care. A small piece of me thinks this will benefit all users, as now they're going to be forced to design the dashboard around using a controller, too, not just voice.
Bundle will be $399 and goes on sale in June. Games with Gold launches on Xbox One in June. Exclusive discounts available to Gold members on 360/Xbox One starting June. Apps no longer require a Gold subscription:
Since the beginning, we have focused on delivering great games and entertainment experiences for you. Your feedback matters to us and it shapes the products and services we build. Your feedback showed up in the Xbox One console we launched back in November and in the monthly updates we’ve delivered since.
Today, we’re excited to share more ways your feedback is impacting the products we build.
First, beginning on June 9th, in all markets where Xbox One is sold, we will offer Xbox One starting at $399*. This is a new console option that does not include Kinect. For $399, our new Xbox One offering will continue to deliver access to the best blockbuster games like “Titanfall,” “Call of Duty: Ghosts,” “Forza Motorsport 5,” “Dead Rising 3,” and the upcoming “Watch Dogs,” “Destiny” and "Sunset Overdrive." You will also be able to access popular entertainment apps, such as Twitch, YouTube, and Netflix, as well as watch live TV and use OneGuide. Finally, you will continue to be able to use many of the unique features of Xbox One including the ability to get game invites while you watch TV, switch between games and entertainment apps, enjoy Twitch broadcasts, and upload your favorite gaming moments.
Next, we’re bringing more value to Xbox Live Gold members and offering all Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners access to entertainment apps whether or not you have an Xbox Live Gold membership. In early June, here is what you can expect from the new generation of Xbox Live:
Free games with Games with Gold**. Since Games with Gold launched on Xbox 360 a year ago, over 12 million people have enjoyed great free games, resulting in nearly 200 million hours of free fun playing Games with Gold titles. We’ve been learning from your feedback and have focused on making improvements each month to the selection of titles. To celebrate the one-year anniversary of Games with Gold for Xbox 360 and as a thank you for helping shape this program, members will receive an additional free Xbox 360 game in June. The Games with Gold titles for Xbox 360 in June are “Dark Souls,” “Charlie Murder” and a bonus game of “Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition.” We’re pleased to bring Games with Gold to Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox One in June. Members will have subscription-based access to free games ranging from top hits to breaking indie stars. The program will launch on Xbox One with “Max: The Curse of Brotherhood” and “Halo: Spartan Assault.” A single Gold membership will get you access to the free games for both Xbox One and Xbox 360.
Exclusive Discounts. Deals with Gold will also launch for Xbox One in June, delivering discounts for great games each month, with significant savings for Xbox Live Gold members. The first titles offered in June will include “Forza Motorsport 5,” “Ryse: Son of Rome,” and a few other surprises. In the coming months, we will offer significant savings of up to 50 – 75 percent off certain titles. This program will continue to be available for Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox 360. And new on Xbox One, we will launch a virtual VIP room exclusive to Xbox Live Gold members where we will feature free games, monthly deals, and other great benefits.
Popular entertainment apps will be available for all Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners. Xbox 360 has been a leader in delivering entertainment experiences for years, with over 170 global entertainment apps and experiences available today. We’re constantly adding new partners and experiences to the growing catalog on Xbox One. Coming in June, anyone with an Xbox will be able to access popular entertainment experiences – whether or not you have an Xbox Live Gold membership. This includes great gaming apps like Machinima, Twitch and Upload, popular video services like Netflix, Univision Deportes, GoPro, Red Bull TV and HBO GO, sports experiences like the NFL app for Xbox One, MLB.TV, NBA Game Time, NHL Game Center and more.*** Microsoft experiences including Internet Explorer, Skype, OneDrive and OneGuide will also be available to all Xbox customers.**** You can find a full list of apps and features that will be available below.
We’ve heard that you want more choices from Xbox One. You want a wide variety of options in your games and entertainment experiences and you also want options in your hardware selection.
To be clear, as we introduce this new Xbox One console option, Kinect remains an important part of our vision. Many of you are using Kinect for Xbox One every day. In fact, more than 80 percent of you are actively using Kinect, with an average of 120 voice commands per month on each console. Some of the most popular voice commands include “Xbox On,” “Xbox Broadcast” and “Xbox Record That.” We will continue to offer a premium Xbox One with Kinect bundle to deliver voice and gesture controls, biometric sign-in, instant personalization, instant scanning of QR codes, and enhanced features only available with Kinect in games such as “Kinect Sports Rivals,” “Just Dance 2014,” “Project Spark” and more.
If you buy Xbox One for $399 and later decide you want to have all the experiences Kinect enables, we will also offer a standalone sensor for Xbox One later this fall. We’ll share more details about the standalone Kinect for Xbox One in the coming months.

Truer words could not have been spoken.
Really excited about all the changes. I'm not a fan of the removal of Kinect, but I'm a bigger proponent of them hitting $400 to compete with Sony, and if they had to drop Kinect to do that, then so be it. As long as I'm able to continue using my voice commands and whatever, it wont bother me too much.

General feeling with people on Twitter is the Kinect is dying a quick death. Especially if they charge more than $100 for the standalone.
Unless there's a really compelling reason to own one, it will. That's why it was bundled in the first place. Standalone accessories RARELY do well. Kinect 1 was an anomaly.

Yep, lots of good changes. I'm more excited about the 50-75% off discounts on certain titles every month. That has massive potential.
Also, I wonder what this entails:
And new on Xbox One, we will launch a virtual VIP room exclusive to Xbox Live Gold members where we will feature free games, monthly deals, and other great benefits.
Some great announcements. If they're revealing stuff this major now, what the hell do they have at E3. :whoa:

Phil Spencer (new head of Xbox) on why this was revealed now:
“We wanted to get this out of the way so that E3 could be about the games and the great platform lineup.”
It's shocking to me. In the one month that Phil Spencer has been head of Xbox, he's made more good decisions than Mattrick did in his entire reign over Xbox. How the hell this guy hasn't be the head of it all along is mind blowing to me. In one month he's already dropped the price of the system, got Games with Gold on Xbox One, removed apps from behind a paywall, introduced a new discount program for Gold members, and has been going out of his way to communicate with fans via Twitter, which is something we NEVER got from anyone else.
Not to mention he's clearly focused 100% solely on games, where as it was all TV and apps before.
This guy is the best thing that ever happened for Xbox. Not a doubt in my mind.

Same here. I've been tempted to get it at times, but I either haven't had the extra cash to spend at the time, or I didn't feel like spending the cash at the time.
As for the new One coming out this summer, eh, I'm perfectly content with my Day One version. Kinect has really come in handy for me, especially with voice commands. Some people hate it, hey, it obviously not going to be for every person. For me, I'm happy with Kinect 2.0. I generally use it a lot more than I will my controller when it comes to jumping from one thing to the next or launching apps/games, etc. The people who have been bitching about Kinect 2.0, well, I guess they can't bitch anymore and claim it's why they aren't buying an Xbox One, since they'll now be able to buy one without the Kinect.

Yeah, the Kinect games that they have right now, not really anything there that interests me. That, and I don't really meet the space requirements for using the Kinect for games. I have limited space for my entertainment center (with TV, One, etc.), a couch and other stuff. So the couch is positioned rather close to the entertainment center. I'd pretty much have to stand on the other side of the room to really be able to use the Kinect for gesture controls and games. So right now it gets used almost exclusively for voice commands, which for me, that's good enough right now. It often makes things quicker and easier than navigate the various menus and whatnot via controller, so having Kinect 2.0 is worth it for me, even without playing Kinect games.

Yeah, I may have to give it a try again at some point. I tried it last November/December with the Kinect Sports stuff, but I couldn't really get it to work with the movements and gestures. Maybe it'll work for some games, even being in as tight as space as everything is, while other games, I'll need a lot more space than what I have now.

Eh, I knew that would happen. It'd probably be no different than if the PS4 announced a $100 price cut tomorrow. That's the trade off to getting the console right away when it first comes out, you're going to pay that full price that they sell it for, while the later buyers get it for $50 or $100 cheaper.
Now granted, with a $100 price drop just six months after it released, I could see some expecting some kind of gift or reward for having supported the console early on at its full price.
Maybe MS will reconsider over the coming weeks and in the end give those who registered an Xbox One on their account by, say for instance May 1st, their choice of one or two free games from the Xbox Live Marketplace to make up the price difference.

Fanboy or not... to me it looks really stupid to essentially have gone against everything that you said would never change. Obviously the fact that there are no worthwhile games at this point that benefit from Kinect and of course the price difference but those are things that should have been sorted out before you came out with your stance for the console. It looks foolish at this point.

Hopefully there's no restrictions this time around. That rumor floating around of it being limited to 512GB definitely sounds like something Microsoft would do, though. Hopefully they're smarter than that.

Yeah, I'd say it's confirmed. One of the pictures that engadget has in that article shows "External Drive 3.6 TB free of 3.6 TB". Assuming that's an actual picture of what it'll be like on the Xbox One, then you can for sure have a 3-4 TB drive hooked up.

It has me wondering now, could you use multiple external drives if you simply connect them all to a USB hub and connect the hub to the One? I do that right now with the two external drives that I have for my laptop. I have both drives connected to the hub, plus various USB charger cords. Both drives show up perfectly fine, as if they were both plugged directly into my laptop, when I plug the USB hub in. So conceivably, it theoretically could work on the Xbox One.
Looking at that same drive you bought JB, right now on Amazon, it's $108.49 for a 3TB drive. The 5TB drive is $211.16. So I'd be tempted to either get two 3TB drives at $108.49 and end up with 6TB total for almost the same price as a single 5TB drive, or consider getting two 4TB drives, which go for $149.99 alone, to end up with 8TB total for $300 total.
With either 6 or 8TB, I'd pretty much be set for the entire life of the Xbox One console. I don't think I'd blow through 6 or 8TB for at least a couple years (if I were to buy every Xbox One game released) and even then, I'm sure there would be some games I'd delete off my hard drive at some point, like old Maddens and other sports games. And with a PS4 now, I'm no longer going to be buying every single game on the One. I'm gonna get Watch_Dogs, FIFA and NHL on the PS4, so that's three games right off the bat that I won't have taking up space on my internal or external drives on my One.

Yeah, that is true. Of course, I could always use a 3TB drive for my laptop. The two drives I have now, a 500GB that is almost completely full and a 2TB drive that is I think over half full, since I have most if not all of my PC and Steam games installed on it.
Either way, I'm gonna keep that USB hub thought in mind. Unfortunately, I can't test it as the hub I have right now is only a USB 2.0 hub. I'd have to buy a new USB 3.0 hub sometime down the road to test it (if no one else has tested it first by that point).

On external storage support, Microsoft says Xbox One owners can choose which of their drives, including the internal 500GB drive, is the default location for new game installs and so on. Microsoft also notes players can install games to an external drive, plug that drive to another Xbox One, and sign in or insert a disc to start playing there.

I'll probably never use that feature, but that is definitely neat. Bring a bunch of games with you? Nope, just brought this little mini hard drive that has my entire catalog of games and need only sign in to access them all from any Xbox One. Awesome.
I'm probably going to get a 1TB drive to start off with. I really have a hard time seeing myself having that many games installed at once, especially with how quickly I go through some of them. If need be, I could always upgrade later and have a second drive, although that seems a bit redundant. I don't need to right NOW, so I'll just wait for a really good sale. Just some clarification from earlier in regards to external drives. Saw this while I was checking out Major Nelson's site.

So in that case, 3TB will definitely be the minimum size drive I'll consider buying. 1 or 2TB might work for a lot of people, but if you buy a lot of games every year, you'll probably run out of room on a 1 or 2TB drive within 1-2 years. I've had my One since it released in November and I only have around 50-70GB of free space left from the 500GB internal drive that came with it.

Still early into it but liking it so far. Plays almost the opposite of the old games, outside it being a FPS. Only complaint is having to click to pick up ammo. I really hate that. Health and Shield packs I can understand but you do have to pick them up often (at least I do) and special items, I got no problem with. Ammo? :bang:
