    Smooth Pancakes' Coaching Carousel Career

A Rise to Greatness: A Coaching Carousel Dynasty

The Coaching Career of Marko Ramius

Alright, time to jump into a new dynasty report and have some fun. CC is going to make this a blast, as well as watching the rise of the career of my coach. I have some VERY STRICT rules for job advancement that is going to make this a long career, so you definitely won't see my coach making it to the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Ohio State or Oregon anytime soon.

--- I posted this in the last post at the bottom of this page, however, I am also editing it into this post so anyone who starts reading this for the first time, will see it right away and hopefully find it easier to follow my coach's career.

Starting in the Dynasty History post, under Yearly Recaps, I have the year 2011 hyperlinked to my post that contains my 2011 schedule. Every new year, I will hyperlink that year to the post that contains that year's football schedule.

In the Coach Statistics post, under Coach Milestones, I have the score of the Biggest Win and Biggest Loss hyperlinked to that game's post. Same thing with the Coach Career Win-Loss vs. Opponent table. I have the biggest win and/or biggest loss, for each opponent I have played so far, hyperlinked to that game's post in this thread.

And in each season's schedule, I am hyperlinking the scores of each game, to each game's post. So if you go to my season one schedule post, and click on the score of my 26-10 loss at Louisville, you will be taken to the post that contains that game's summary.

That way if this gets into tens of pages, everything will be extremely easy to find and read without having to sort through various posts by those reading or following just to see what happened in my next game. You'll be able to go from game to game, season to season, through the entire history of this dynasty, just by following the various hyperlinks. This is my way of helping keep things very organized, very easy to follow, and very easy to read for everyone who might wander in here, whether you've been following this since my very first post, or you won't start following until I'm halfway through season 5.

Should be a lot of fun.

I'm just getting started on my coaching carousel as well (starting as Memphis as a DC). Haven't had a chance to play any games yet, but I'm excited to get started.

Question. This happened to me so I'm wondering how you're going to handle it. I was an OC in year 1 of my dynasty and my HC got fired afterwards and I was offered the HC job. I didn't think it would make sense to turn it down so I took it. What will you do if they offer you the HC job at FIU after year 1?

Thanks man. Should be able to do somewhat decent. FIU has a fairly decent team, and a very kind schedule, with Louisville being the toughest team they play. So should be a fun first season.

Same here. I got done with my preseason and week 1 recruiting, so I'm currently in week 2 in my dynasty. Gonna knock out recruiting, and then get things kicked off with my first game against North Texas.

Unfortunately, even though I would gladly jump at the HC job if offered, I'm not allowed to accept it per my job progression rules. I want this dynasty to last the full 60 years, so I'm making job progression VERY slow and long. Thus, per my rules, I'm not allowing myself to be a head coach at all, at any school, until a minimum of the 6th or 7th year (depending on contract lengths) of my dynasty. Even if my dream job of Navy offers me the head coach position in, say, the 5th season, I couldn't accept it because I'm not allowed to be a head coach until the 6th season at the earliest.

Plus there's the rule I have on myself that I have to honor all contracts in full. So right now I have a two year contract to be FIU's Offensive Coordinator. No matter what school offers me any position, I can't consider another job, even an advancement up the chain at FIU, until at least after the second season.

Yep, gonna keep things very fun and interesting as it'll be a slow, slow rise up the coaching ranks in my career. You're not going to see me be the OC at FIU in the first season, and then be HC of Alabama by the fifth season. If I want to be HC of Alabama, going my be progression rules, if they're a 5 star team at the time, I can't be HC of them until at least the 12th season. If they're a 6 star team at the time, then I can't be HC until at least the 17th season.

    Game One

    Game Notes

--- Well, this one we knew was going to be ugly from the start, as it was a rainy day in Florida. We won the coin toss and elected to kick. Thankfully our defense held strong despite giving up a first down on the ground, and eventually forced the first punt of the day. Right away we were able to get our rushing game established, as we were able to pick up a pair of first downs and then took to the air on back to back plays, including a 20 yard gain on a play action pass. We were able to drive down to the North Texas 3 yard line, however, our offense stalled from there, forcing us to settle for a 20 yard field goal.

North Texas wasted no time jumping on our failed offensive drive, rushing and passing down the field on us, as well as received some help thanks to a defensive pass interference penalty, finding the end zone to take the lead. Our offense tried to find an answer, however, a sack on 3rd and 5 would force a punt. We however, caught a huge break as our free safety, Jonathan Cyprien was able to recover a fumble on the muffed catch, giving us the ball right back on the North Texas 31 yard line. Following two completed passes, we were able to get the ball down to the North Texas 7 yard line, before an interception on 3rd and goal brought our drive to an end.

Our defense apparently decided they didn’t want to go back on the field just then, as North Texas was able to escape from their own one yard, and drive the ball clear down to our 10 yard line, even with two holding penalties called on them, before settling for a 27 yard field goal. We both traded punts before our offense went back out for another drive. We were able to pick up two first downs on three rushes, before running into trouble after two incomplete passes. Wesley Carroll was able to connect with Dudley LaPorte for a 10 yard gain on 3rd and 10, though it wasn’t enough for a first, setting up 4th and inches. However, Coach Cristobal decided he didn’t trust us enough to go for it, even on the North Texas 48 yard line, choosing instead to punt.

After trading three more punts back and forth, we got the ball back with 1:30 left in the half, and were able to drive down to the North Texas 30 yard line. However, an interception on 1st and 10 at the North Texas 6 yard line, that was returned clear out to their own 36 yard line, quickly brought to a close any hope of tying the game before halftime. Instead, North Texas, with only 21 seconds to work with, quickly hit a 33 yard pass and were able to set themselves up for a 48 yard field goal as time expired to give them a 10 point lead.

Start of the 2nd half, though it took nine plays, we were able to drive the ball 30 yards out to midfield. However a sack and an incomplete pass killed our drive. North Texas wasted no time in trying to kill our spirits, as their offense needed only one play to score on us, a 90 yard touchdown bomb to quickly extend their lead to 17 halfway through the 3rd. Not ones to back down from a challenge, our offense showed that they too only needed to run one play to score a touchdown, as T.Y. Hilton was able to get behind the secondary along the left sideline, and Carroll was able to drop a pass right into his waiting hands for an 80 strike in response to get us back within 10.

Then Lady Luck smiled upon us, as a fumbled kickoff return was quickly recovered by our kicker Jack Griffin, giving us the ball right back on the North Texas 25 yard line. And that right there is why you haul ass down the field on kickoffs! Jack Griffin, the kicker, sprinted his butt down the field and was in a position to jump on the fumble and give us the ball right back! If he was the kicker at Ohio State, he would have just earned himself a free tattoo for that play!

Unfortunately, we would only make it down to the 9 yard line before three straight incomplete passes would force us to settle for a 26 yard field goal. Deciding it was time to stop screwing around with us, North Texas promptly turned around and rushed and passed on us out to midfield, before hitting us with a 48 yard strike to once again jump out and expand their lead. I need to remember to hang our defensive coordinator sometime during the coming week. Maybe the starting defense too. It may make our on the field defense even worse, but at least I’ll feel better.

Both teams traded punts over their next two possessions before we were able to get things moving once again. A pair of encroachment penalties on the defense, some great running by Darriet Perry, and a 60 yard strike from Carroll to Junior Mertile, got us down to the North Texas 6 yard line before a 6 yard pass to LaPorte closed the gap once again.

North Texas was able to piece together a couple play drive, before an interception by our right end Aaron Davis gave us the ball back at our own 38 yard line. Unfortunately, that drive would be short lived as we would give the ball right back on an interception two plays later, settling North Texas up with 1st and 10 on our 45 yard line. Our defense held tough though, forcing North Texas to settle for a 47 yard field goal. However, with 3 minutes left to play, and down by 10, we weren’t able to get our offense going, and had to punt. Our defense then came up strong, and forced a 4th and inches situation, in which North Texas decided to not risk turning the ball over at midfield and chose to punt it back.

We only needed two plays to find the end zone, as Carroll was able to hook up with Elijah Maxey for a 48 yard touchdown pass, getting us back within 3 points with under 2 minutes to play. Knowing time was short, Coach Cristobal elected to go for the onside kick, which we were able to miraculously recover! 1st and 10, ball on our 37 yard line, and only 1:30 left to play, we knew this was it, this was the drive that was going to decide the game.

Passing our way down the field with military precision, we were able to set ourselves up with 2nd and 6 from the North Texas 10 yard line, 28 seconds left to play. Wayne Times broke away from his man cutting across the middle, Carroll threw the pass to Times, who was sprinting across the middle of the field right on the goal line. This was it, this was about to be the pass that sealed the great comeback!

Or maybe not. Hilbert Jackson managed to sneak in from the back of the end zone, cut off the route, and intercept the pass at the North Texas 1 yard line, sealing our fate as they took over with 20 seconds left to play.

We should have just ran the ball, set up for the field goal, and taken our chances in overtime.

With the loss, we start the year 0-1, and immediately drop into an 0-1 hole in the Sun Belt Conference. North Texas starts off their year with a win and gets a leg up on the rest of us in the Sun Belt with an immediate conference victory. Up next for the Golden Panthers, 1-0 Louisville, who is coming off a 34-3 rout of Murray State.

    Game Two

    Game Notes

--- So it turns out this is quite the rainy month. Our second game of the season, second game in the rain. We lost the coin toss, but Louisville elected to receive, so things still worked out for us. Louisville started driving on us at first, but a holding penalty, followed by a false start quickly killed their momentum. However, a couple dropped balls quickly put an end to our drive as well and we were forced to punt. After trading punts after another round of failed drive, Louisville finally got things going as they only needed 6 plays to go 60 yards and find the end zone for the first score of the day.

On our ensuing drive, we were able to put together a beautiful drive, starting from our own 15 yard line and getting in as close as the Louisville 3 yard line. However, two failed attempts to put it in on the ground, and an incomplete pass, and we were forced to attempt a 21 yard field goal, which kicker Jack Griffin proceeded to shank wide left.

We would get another chance just moments later after two incomplete passes and a sack for a 10 yard loss forced a Louisville punt and gave us 1st and 10 on the Louisville 35 yard line. Unfortunately, a defensive stop on 3rd and 2, and we were forced once again to settle for a field goal. And once again, Griffin missed it, a 45 yarder, wide right.

After trading a pair of punts, Louisville decided to it was time to get a bigger lead, and promptly drove down on us and scored another touchdown in 7 plays. Our offense tried to respond, but couldn’t get anything going. It took two failed offensive drives before we were able to finally find our footing again. Using a couple of big runs by Darriet Perry, and some a few well timed passes by Wesley Carroll, FIU was finally able to erase their goose egg off the scoreboard and close the lead down to one score. After our defense forced a three and out, our offense showed they had finally hit their stride, advancing the ball 59 yards over 11 plays to find the end zone, and come back to tie the game up, with 19 seconds left to play in the half.

That would however be the highlights of the day for our offense, as Louisville’s defense came out with a vengeance after halftime and proceeded to completely shut us down for the rest of the game. Unfortunately, the same could not be said about our own defense.

This loss drops us down to 0-2 for the season. Louisville improves to 2-0 for the year. Next up for Florida International, a visit from UCF, who comes into the game with a 1-1 record thanks to a 66-3 win vs. Charleston Southern and a 45-21 loss to Boston College.

Already one goal down (although 3 rush TD is incredibly low).

Yeah, they really need to work on the numbers for these goals. 3 rushing TDs is nothing for any of the 120 teams. Make it 7, 10 maybe for the absolutely low number for the goal. Heck, through two games, of the four TDs I have scored, all four have been rushing TDs. So thank God it's not 3 passing TDs, otherwise I might be in trouble of failing it.

They also need to work out their Pass/Fail Impacts. I gain 4 arrows, and lose one if I fail, if I get 2000+ offensive yards in each year of my contract. However, I gain 4 arrows, and lose none if I fail, if I get 2000+ offensive yards in one season. It should be the other way around. If I don't get 2000+ offensive yards in one season, then I should lose an arrow. If I don't get 2000+ offensive yards in every season, then I shouldn't get hit with a arrow loss.

I've noticed that with some other contract goals. You get hit with a loss if you fail to gain so many yards (or keep from giving up so many yards if on defense) in every season of your contract, but there's no loss at all if you fail that goal in a single season of the contract.

I was going to post these earlier but forgot to. Here are two videos from that 74 yard pass that set us up for the game tying score in the 1st quarter against Louisville. Our only highlight play of the entire game. There wasn't a single other play (besides maybe the 6 yard TD run immediately after this play) that could even be used in the same sentence as the words "highlight play".

    Game Notes

--- So after last week's loss on the road to Louisville, it was time for us to welcome fellow Florida dweller, UCF, into town. Hoping to lift up the team and coming out strong after the loss last week, and with it being a fellow Florida team for our opponent, Coach Cristobal decided to change things up this week and pull out the special uniforms. Instead of the usual Navy jersey/Navy pants combo we wear for all of our home games, Coach decided it was time to break out the black jerseys.

We come running out of the tunnel before the game, ready to play in the nice, bright, hot, rain? Our third week in a row in the rain. We won the coin toss, elected to kick. The rain pretty much made things impossible to move on offense. Three straight punts combined to start the game. However, it would be UCF to find the scoreboard first thanks to a fumble by Darriet Perry on 1st and 10 from our own 10 yard line, setting UCF for an easy touchdown.

Another quick drive by UCF and that would be it for the first half as neither offense could get anything going after that. After halftime, it got nothing but worse...

After the game, Coach Cristobal announced that this was the last time this season that we were going to wear the black jerseys. So much for hoping they'd fire up our team.

With the loss, we drop into a 0-3 hole to start the season, while UCF gets back on the winning track and improves to 2-1. Up next on our schedule, our second conference opponent of the season, UL Lafayette. The Ragin' Cajuns come into the game with a 1-2 record, opening the season with a 35-7 loss at #7 Oklahoma State and a 20-17 loss at Kent State, before they finally broke into the win column with a 33-13 victory over Nicholls State.

Now, in the interest of full disclosure, I have a confession to make. That was actually my second time playing UCF. I had played UCF already right before this game that I have posted about. However, I made myself as I had paused the game with 30 seconds left, after I failed to convert 4th down and goal. I paused it to add the details to my Games Notes, and then I also started typing in the game summary and the team stats. By the time I was done with all that, I was thinking I had finished the game, and chose to quit. Then I remembered there were still 30 seconds left to play. Too late. Everything was lost, I had to play the game again.

However, while my offense did move a little better (we gained 122 yards rushing as opposed to just 68 the first game), we got whooped even worse in this game than we did in the first game, and I lost a GREAT story in the Game Notes.

We lost to UCF 10-0 in the game, and this was a game that had everything. My kicker went 0 for 3 on field goals, having his first attempt, a 47 yard field goal, blocked. His second field goal attempt, from 46 yards out, went wide right. His third attempt, from 30 yards, went wide left! My kicker kicked the damn ball every direction but center! Even UCF's kicker got in on the sucking, missing a 30 yard field goal of his own. UCF's punt team also committed a turnover, as a bad snap caused a bobbled ball by the punter, leading to a fumble and fumble recovery by FIU. That was the play that resulted in 1st and 10 on UCF's 13 yard line, and that ended in the missed 30 yard field goal by my kicker.

Also from that game, were my failures inside the UCF 30 yard line. Ended up scoring 0 points despite getting inside UCF's 30 yard line 7 times in the game. And then there was our rushing. With 5:30 left to play in the game, we had rushed the ball 24 times. We had a whopping 28 yards rushing. Then there came my magical final drive of the game. This is the excerpt from the Game Notes detailing that final drive.

We then proceeded to put together a 14 play, 59 yard, 5:00 drive that took us from our own 31 yard line down to UCF's 10. The impressive thing about that drive, 11 of those 14 plays were runs, including 8 straight rushes at one point, gaining us 40 of our 59 yards on the ground. However, an attempt to go for it on 4th and goal, ultimately resulted in failure, ensuring our first shutout loss of my coaching career.
Basically, the key summary from that first game against UCF, is pretty much the stuff I included in the Stat(s) of the Game from that game.

    Stat(s) of the Game:
    - 7 times inside the UCF 30 yard line. 0 points scored.
    - 28 yards rushing, on 24 attempts, before our final drive of the game.
    - Kicker Jack Griffin - 0 for 3 on field goals. 1 blocked, 1 wide left, 1 wide right.
    - Recovered a fumble after a bad snap during a UCF punt, had 1st and 10 from the UCF 13 yard line. 0 points scored.

Also, to keep things easily accessible, especially as this thread grows into multiple pages, I have everything hyperlinked.
