Finally. Had a fucking monsoon pop up out of nowhere yesterday evening around 5pm. Came roaring through, dumping a shit ton of rain. It left behind, just in my neighborhood, multiple limbs down, one full tree down across the road (leaving the road closed for most of the evening until it was finally cleared up) and left the road literally flooded above the ankles because all the storm drains were completely clogged and blocked up with leaves and crap.

The entire downtown ended up with no power. Our power flicked (live half a mile south of downtown), but ended up completely losing cable and internet all evening. Every channel, got the "this channel will be available soon" message on. So ended up spending the night watching Act of Valor on blu-ray and The Longest Day on DVD. Worked well enough. Things finally returning to normal today. Cable came back at some point. Internet just back in the last half hour.

And upon my return, in the very first thread I visit (this one), I see the validity of my avatar is still in full effect!

I see both as overreaching and irresponsible/illegal. But I don't see one as any worse than the other. As I said, at least until companies start complying.

Well, that was a pretty good day. Got some free tickets from work for today's Toledo Mud Hens game at noon, down in the season ticket holder seats, right behind home plate, just three rows up from the field. Ended up sitting directly behind Detroit Tigers General Manager David Dombrowski and Assistant General Manager Al Avila.

May not have been one of the big star players or Jim Leyland, but you can't say every day that you met and talked with two of the top guys in the front office of a major league baseball club. Looked like they were getting a look at some Mud Hens players to possibly use as trade bait before the deadline.

On the grandmother in the hospital note, yet another fuck up. The nursing staff gave her a sedative last night at 10pm (according to them she was being restless), then apparently gave her a second sedative at 7am this morning. Two doses of sedative on the same shift, my uncle was furious. He was in the medical field in the military, albeit years ago, but he knows plenty to know when the nurses and doctors are repeatedly fucking up. The doctors all morning thought she was just tired and sleepy, it wasn't until late afternoon after my uncle got there, that he realized what the hell was going on and one of the doctor gave her something to counter the effects of the sedatives. Boy did she instantly perk up. Within minutes, was awake, was talking, ate some dinner, read the newspaper.

So she ended up sitting there half sleeping all day because the overnight shift nurses drugged her up with sedatives. They want her to have a breathing mask on at night while she's sleeping, which she doesn't like and I don't blame her. It's along the line of the mask of a CPAP machine. It's a big mask, it's bulky, it covers damn near the entire face. She's 90-something, I'm 27 and I would find that goddamn thing an annoying pain in the ass to keep on for multiple hours at a time. Thus, our current theory is the nurses didn't want to keep fighting with her over the mask (they said she was being "restless") and ended up giving her a sedative to keep her asleep and not fight with them over having the mask on.

So my uncle feels she was basically set back an entire day (at least), due to that fuck up. They haven't been able to do any physical therapy with her for a couple days, she was barely responsive to the doctors and nurses asking her questions all day until around 4pm when they gave her the medicine to counter the sedative. Now, she apparently has blood clots in her left arm and right leg that just showed up on ultrasounds in the last 24 hours.

Went in on Thursday the 18th for what was supposed to be a one day procedure, home by the 19th. It's now been nearly two weeks (with all of last week spent in the ICU), their "hopeful" release date if Wednesday, but all three of us are in agreement of fat chance in hell of that happening. She'll be lucky to get discharged by Friday at this rate, if not end up there for yet another weekend. And there's no consistency in the doctors. This morning alone, in a span of an hour while sitting in the hospital room, we had three different cardiologists, two different pulmonologists, two speech therapists (to make sure she was swallowing food and drink without any problems) and a respiratory specialist come in. It seems like when it comes to the cardiologists and the pulmonologists, we end up with a cycle of the partner of the partner of the partner of etc. coming in each new day to check on things. So, they have not done a single thing to discredit my theory that, at least at this one hospital, everyone they hire came dead last in their class at medical school. So many dumbass people pulling so many dumbass mistakes over and over cannot be an accident.

i would definitely file an official complaint. there's gonna be some shit load of medical costs for 2 weeks worth of care/drugs/coverage, on what should have been at the most a couple of days. offer to pay the costs for the few days that she was supposed to be there, but tell them that you're not responsible for their mistakes and that you shouldnt have to pay for them screwing up.

that doctor must have graduated from the obama school of medicine.

Does she need a CPAP? They generally do not put one on you unless you need it. They can tell from the O2 stats if breathing is labored during sleep, even without a full sleep study. I have been on a mask for 10 years. Most hospitals have different types of masks. I could never get used to a full mask but I have had no problems with a nasal mask. Reggie White might still be with us if he wore his. He had sleep apnea and refused to wear a mask. I realize that she is much older but if she refuses proper treatment it is hard to fault a nurse if that was the only option.

I tried CPAP for a while because I have severe apnea (stop breathing about 50 times an hour) but I just could not sleep with it. I had tried it for over a year, and was able to keep it on the whole night maybe twice.
    The dude abides.

Yeah, we're not at all happy. We've taken to where my uncle stayed in the room the entire night, my mom went up this morning and is going to be staying all day. Not sure what will happen tonight, if she'll just stay all night too or if my uncle will come back up for the overnight hours. At this point, with the care these dipshits have given my grandmother, we're not leaving her alone for more than an hour or two. We're keeping someone there in the room at all times.

It's not an actual CPAP mask. It's sized similar to a full CPAP mask, but it's just simply used for her to take breathing treatments, delivering the medicine through steam/air. She has a similar machine with a smaller mask that just covers the nose and mouth at home, but they keep strapping this full, head-sized mask on her in the hospital. It's not absolutely necessary for her to have it on constantly. Hell, they were asking her after only 10-20 minutes yesterday mid-morning if she wanted to take it off and that was alright, that was enough for now. And while they want her to try and keep it on all night, it's not required. They just want her to try. If she wants to take it off, she's supposed to be allowed to.

It's beginning to appear that the dumbshits on the overnight shifts just don't want to be bothered to get up off their asses. The overnight nurse when she was up in ICU, my uncle and mom took to calling her Nurse Ratched (from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) because she was about the same age and seemingly didn't give a fuck about things, she couldn't be bothered to come back and check on things. One night, my mom and uncle were in there, my grandma was having an issue with pain, so they pressed the call button. They had to press it three goddamn times. The first two times the nurse just turned it off from the nurse's station and never came back to check on things. Third time, she finally deemed it worthy of her time to get up off her ass and come back, only to be surprised to see my mom and uncle in there (apparently thinking it was only my grandma in the room). Now this is someone in ICU. Whether the patient was alone or not, there is no fucking reason it should take three times pressing the call button for the nurse and nearly an hour for the bimbo to finally make her way back to the room to check on things.

So while she isn't required to keep the mask on all night, they like her to try. Well, based on how things played out, we're under the theory that the night nurses just didn't want to deal with her all night, mask or no mask and just drugged her up with sedatives to keep her asleep all night. Regardless, whether she was restless or not, two fucking doses of sedative in one single shift is overkill. The dose sizes would be enough to put me under for 6-8 hours, and I weigh 250 pounds. She's in her 90s, tiny and I doubt she even weighs 100 anymore. If that sedative would have been strong enough to put a 250 pound person out for 6-8 hours, what do you think it'll do to a, maybe, 100 pound 90+ year old woman? Then do that to her twice in a period of 9 hours. Yeah, fucking ridiculous.

Then the day nurses lied directly to our faces in the morning. They were saying she was just tired and sleepy all morning because she had been up off and on most of the night, so she was simply tired that morning. It wasn't until nearly 4pm that we finally found out for the first time that they drugged her up with sedatives overnight. Like I said, as soon as the doctor gave her medicine to counter the sedative, within minutes she was alert, she was awake, she was sitting up eating, she ended up reading the paper, she could actually talk loud enough to hear her across the room, whereas before you had to be leaned over her bed to hear her.

Thankfully, I don't think we will have to worry about that again, because the doctor rescinded the prescription of that sedative from her file. So the nurses are no longer allowed to give her that stuff. Like my uncle said, she basically lost an entire day yesterday. They drugged her up overnight, she basically didn't do a damn thing but lay there sleeping until 4pm, because of her just laying there for the last day or two, she has now developed blood clots in her right leg and left arm. So her getting released by tomorrow is basically never going to happen. The day ended up being a complete and total waste and loss, and now it's gonna take at least another couple days to get her to the point of discharge. They take her one step forward, only to completely fuck something up, sending her straight back two or three steps. At this point, it's their own goddamn fault that she's still sitting in the hospital after nearly two weeks. They keep screwing shit up, they keep setting her back in her recovery. A one day procedure turned into two weeks (with one week spent in ICU). Yeah, nothing but massive fuck up after massive fuck up can cause that.

Did you have the surgery? I would hate to hear you are doing nothing about it. It is hard to get used to but so is having a stroke because you are not getting oxygen to the brain.
