I think you are asking about 2 different things:

#1 Someone who has been sentenced to death

As mentioned above the appellate process is LENGTHY (state court of appeals, state supreme court, us supreme court). Moreover, its not just 1 appeal many death row inmates are on their multiple appeal attempts so you have to rinse/repeat the entire process.

You might ask how can they appeal the same trial multiple times? Well they simply claim that new evidence has come to light. Of course, the problem they run into legally is the legal standard is new evidence has come to light and it was not discoverable at the time of trial. (Think DNA evidence for convicts convicted before DNA technology became available).

Recently, states are having problems obtaining the necessary mix of drugs for lethal injections. Your firing squad idea would likely be ruled "cruel and unusual punishment" in violation of the Constitution. Now why that would be considered "cruel and unusual" when we hung people at the time the Constitution was written and adopted is laughable to anyone that uses logic/reasoning. But the left reads into the Constitution what it sees fit and ignores what it doesn't like. (see e.g., 2nd Amendment)

Anti-death penalty advocates have been pretty successful in recent years going after the companies that make the drugs that are used in lethal injections by picketing their company locations, etc... This has caused somewhat of a shortage of the drug "cocktail" that is used for lethal injection.

#2 Someone with a sentence so.... long they will never leave prison alive.

The answer of why we don't execute them is simple they were not sentenced by a jury of their peers (or judge if they waived their right to a jury trial) to die. That would unquestionably be Unconstitutional to execute someone who has not been sentenced to execution.

Of course, you do have a point of why do some people get sentenced to several hundred year sentences instead of just a sentence of life without the possibility of parole. Usually that is because of the way that statutes are written in the states that for whatever reason will permit a 1000 year sentence for multiple counts of X crime but would not permit a sentence of life without the possibility of parole.

Yep, it is a shame in regards to execution methods. A bullet would be so much cheaper and likely faster if properly aimed. Thankfully Utah has started bringing back the firing squad. And a rope is reusable, so huge money saver!

And that's actually something that has always bothered me. Someone can sit there torturing and murder a bunch of people, or rape, torture and murder women or children and make their deaths long, slow and agonizing, yet the fuckers get a nice painless "humane" death like someone taking their pet animal and having them put to sleep at the vet.

With some of the crimes those on death row have committed, the pain and suffering they put their victims through before allowing them to die and be at peace, fuck them getting a painless death by needle. I hope it fucking hurts like hell so they can experience a fraction of what their victims felt in their final moments at the hands of these assholes.

Don't forget the gas chamber. There are still a few states that have it available.

I read something different yesterday that the prosecution now believes the woman drove intentionally into the crowd. If correct, its odd she wasn't charged with 4 counts of murder 1:

. A person commits murder in the first degree when that person unlawfully and with malice aforethought causes the death of another human being. Malice is that deliberate intention unlawfully to take away the life of a human being, which is manifested by external circumstances capable of proof.

A person commits murder in the first degree when the death of a child results from the willful or malicious injuring, torturing, maiming or using of unreasonable force by said person or who shall willfully cause, procure or permit any of said acts to be done upon the child pursuant to Section 7115 of Title 10 of the Oklahoma Statutes. It is sufficient for the crime of murder in the first degree that the person either willfully tortured or used unreasonable force upon the child or maliciously injured or maimed the child.
The difference between Murder 1 and Murder 2 is the severity of punishment (death v. life is the max respectively). Seems to me that if they really have evidence of intentionally driving into the crowd Murder 1 is the proper charge. Of course, alcohol/drugs negate intent so perhaps they have some evidence of intent but currently only murder 2 charge b/c they also have some evidence of alcohol/drugs.

Well, from what I've seen online, it sounds like they are at least pursuing murder 2 charges. That much I'm happy about. No deals, no pleas, no lesser charge bullshit, she absolutely deserves murder 2 for every death and attempted murder for every injured person.

US government officially rejects the keystone pipeline. I am pretty surprised by that decision though I understand it in the sense of US energy policy for the Democrats. Do you think that decision would be reversed under a Republican President?

how were you surprised? its been obvious Obama was going to reject the pipeline for years and he just "delayed" his decision until he got a decent jobs report to minimize any political blowback from union members (who actually agree with the GOP on this issue).

Assuming you Canadians don't just move on and ship the oil to China (or some other country) - Yes 100% guarantee a GOP President would absolutely approve the pipeline and almost assuredly be done within his/her first 100 days after taking office.

Canadian government is kind of stuck because the proposal to move the oil to China is being blocked on the West Coast by Environmentalists, the BC government and First Nations groups. There is some talk of running a pipeline to Hudson's Bay and shipping to Europe and Africa but the cost benefit analysis just isn't adding up. Keystone investors are apparently not abandoning the project as they believe the Republicans will win the next election...

I'd say the GOP v. Hillary is roughly a 50/50 proposition but if I ran Canada the oil would have been going to China years ago now with a big middle finger extended to Obama.

If you ran Canada, Jaymo would denounce his citizenship and move to Sweden.

Well, since apparently sharing an opinion that isn't 100% the same as the PC and/or Christmas Nazis at OS is apparently a no no, I guess I'll make my post here. Those offended at OS can choke on my big fat dick.

In regards to the outrage at Starbucks about only having red cups with a green logo and heaven forbid they don't have Christmas stuff plastered all over their overpriced cups of shitty coffee...

"The whole thing is stupid as hell. If you care about Christmas that much, go donate to a charity, go help feed the homeless, help out the hungry and poor. Go donate to Christmas campaigns to help make sure underprivileged kids get toys and presents for their Christmas mornings. No, let's bitch because Starbuck's doesn't have a bunch of Christmas stuff on their overpriced coffee cups. Nothing but a bunch of fake asses looking for something to act offended by and bitch about in social media. It's people like those I intentionally say Seasons Greetings or some other PC saying literally just to piss them off for my pleasure. Works every time with them.

That's all I got to say on the topic."

Did someone get banned at OS? Oh the fond memories of waving the ban stick.

I would think the green and red color are enough to be considered Christmas-y. People like to bitch and moan about anything and everything. The "War on Christmas whiners" are just as annoying as the "Freedom From Religion jackasses" who sit in Wisconsin, trying to save the world, one nasty letter at a time.

No, not that I know of. I made that above quoted comment in reply to the discussion at the time of the Starbucks outrage, only to get some butthurt fucktard posting about "always gotta be that one guy" and "this is why threads get closed", on a general Off-Topic thread with thousands of replies. (think our Anything thread)

So I said fine, if sharing different opinions is apparently a problem, I'll delete my post. I couldn't delete it, so just edited it to a brief sentence or two about not wanting to offend the PC and/or Christmas police.

Heaven forbid someone share a different opinion. Now I remember why I never visited OS for years until going back for the MLB The Show forums last year when I bought my PS4. Full of never ending whiny bitches who get offended at anything and everything.
