The Astros got their most impressive pitching performance of the young season on Monday in San Diego when lefty Jeff Locke threw a complete game 4-hit shutout and Houston beat the Padres, 4-0. Locke struck out 7, did not issue a walk and faced just one over the minimum in shutting down the San Diego attack. Houston got solo home runs from George Springer and Carlos Correa as Springer was one of 3 Astro batters to tally 3 hits on the day.
In game two Jason Castro went 3 for 4 at the plate with an RBI but the Houston pitching staff imploded and San Diego won easily, 12-4. The poor pitching began with starter Alex White who allowed 6 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts while lasting just 3 innings as the righty took his second loss of 2015.
In the rubber match, the Astros were 5-3 losers despite solo home runs from Dexter Fowler, Chris Carter and Matt Dominguez - his first of the campaign. In another first, Houston ace Jarred Cosart was tagged with his first loss as he allowed 5 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits with 8 punch outs and no walks in 6 innings on the hill.
HOU 4-12-0
SD 0-4-0
HOU 4-11-2
SD 12-17-1
HOU 3-7-1
SD 5-11-0
The Astros went 4-5 on the 9-game road trip and will return home on Thursday as they close the month of April with the first of 4 against the Seattle Mariners.
