When I walk around at 2 a.m., nobody looks at me suspiciously, and police don’t ask me any questions. I wonder if our attackers could say the same.

Who am I to stand from my perch of privilege, surrounded by million-dollar homes and paying for a $60,000 education, to condemn these young men as “thugs?” It’s precisely this kind of “otherization” that fuels the problem.
this is where dhook gets his ideas from.

Yeah, I have to be up for work at 5am in the morning. The whole staying out all hours of the night rioting, destroying police cars and burning shit to the ground really isn't doable on my work schedule. Maybe around Christmas. I'll have from Christmas Eve all the way through to Sunday to do some rioting and set shit on fire. Would that work for you as well? We can team up and loot some really good things, cover more ground.

Now this case in New York, this one I'm staying on the sidelines about because I haven't followed it at all, I have no clue the details behind it all. Ferguson, you had no choice but to follow it from day one because it's all the news ever talked about half the time, but this, I haven't really followed, so I'll just have to sit back and watch the discussion on this one.

Also, just a sidenote, watching that video, has ANYBODY ever heard of turning their damn phone sideways and recording in landscape mode?

Hmm, not sure what they would have charged him with. Only thing I could think of off the top of my head would be entering a crime scene or failing to obey an officer by going to get his bike (like he was trying to do at the end of the video). Either that, or if he kept trying to get close with his phone or otherwise antagonizing the police during the follow up crime scene investigation, possibly could have gotten him for disorderly conduct or something else.

    Not sure either

Medical examiner ruled his death as a homicide but said his obesity and asthma were contributing factors.

NYPD bans chokeholds and Coroner ruled the homicde by chokehold

Not sure what else there is that the video didn't show

Looked a wee bit excessive given that many cops...then the bigger one coming in at the end trying to look like he helped.

    *smh*

While I will NEVER advocate looting and burning when there's injustice or perceived injustice, you really have to be a black person to really understand just how the cards are stacked against us. Yes, the American Dream is obtainable by anyone who works hard enough and yada yada and yes, black people are their own worst enemy most of the time, but "the system" really does fuck black people over consistently

Yeah, the chokehold wasn't necessary, but in the heat of the moment, the officer probably thought it his best angle to try and get the guy under control, as tall and large as that guy was. I'm over 6' and a large guy myself, but even I would have needed some kind of leverage to get that guy on the ground and handcuff him if he was resisting, I wouldn't have been able to get him under control through straight up maneuvers and strength. That's about the only justification I see for the officer going for a chokehold during the arrest, just based off of knowledge gleaned SOLELY from that video.

As for the whole thing with breaking up a fight and why the confrontation and whatnot to begin with, I'll have to do some searching and reading to find out the story of what happened. Hopefully the entire grand jury transcripts and whatnot are released like they did in Ferguson, give people a chance to read through everything.
