I was nine during Superstorm, and we had my two-year cousin in town, at our beach-front house (only house, not "we're rich!" beach house), when we lost power for a few days, maybe a week.

And, since it's the beach, the house had none of that "insulation" stuff. For the beach, it got ridiculously cold.

FWIW, Smooth, I say Superstorm because that's what The Weather Channel called it. I even remember the graphics

Have fun with that shit. A co-worker was telling me today that he's about to start his classes too. We've got a bunch of guys with Security+ and other certifications too. Massive waste of time, IMHO, but that's because I have no plans on continuing in this field for much longer.

My body is such an asshole to me.

Thanks to a 12 hour kickoff marathon for one of our campaigns yesterday, HS football that kept me at work until 11:30 last night, leaving for my morning show gig at 2am, and not sleeping very well Thursday night, I managed about a grand total of 7 hours of sleep over a 52 hour period since Thursday morning. I got home this morning at 10am, was long gone and dead the world by 10:30am. I wake up 5 goddamn hours later.

What an asshole my body is.

Well, there's not much I can do about it. I work when I'm told to work, especially since we're down to a bare bones minimum staff in town after two rounds of layoffs by Clear Channel over the past two years. I was needed for the kickoff marathon from 6am to 6pm, and I had no choice but to run studio for HS football from 6pm to 11:30pm since there are only two of us to do, and we both have games.

And I had no choice but get up at 2am and go and do my morning show until 9am because I don't have a backup or fill in person. The guy who used to do the Saturday morning show before me is no longer working with the company, and no one has ever been trained to fill in, so I am in studio every single Saturday morning (including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve and New Years Day over the past two years) as there is no one to fill in. I have had 4 Saturdays off since May 2010, solely because I was too sick to actually work my show those days, and that caused issues because one of our normal weekday guys (either the guy who does the 5-9am show during the week, or the guy who does that 9am-2pm show during the week) have to come in on overtime and do my show.

I wouldn't sit here going 50+ hours on a handful of hours of sleep or going 48 hours straight with no sleep or whatever other crazy periods of little to no sleep I go on if it wasn't for work. But if I want to keep my job, or at least get as many hours per week and get as many hours paid out on my timecard and paychecks as I can, hey, you do what you gotta do.

And I do it. Last year, I got to work one morning at 6:45am for a remote that I was running the studio for, I was already feeling sick and worn down. Not even a minute after walking into the building, I was running to the back of the building to the bathroom and spent 5 minutes puking my guts up. But, because we had remotes on both morning shows that morning, the only guy who could have filled in for me was running the studio on the other station at the same time as me. So after puking my guts up and feeling like complete shit, sucked it up and ran the studio from 7-10am despite feeling like a case of living death.

Again, gotta do what you gotta do. 'Tis the case when you try to squeeze 150 or so 2-3 hour live broadcasts between two stations/campaigns into a 6 week period.

    From the Old Guard website:

What is it like to guard in bad weather?

The guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (we call ourselves "Sentinels") are completely dedicated to their duty of guarding the Tomb. Because of that dedication, the weather does not bother them. In fact, they consider it an honor to stand their watch (we call it "walking the mat"), regardless of the weather. It gets cold, it gets hot - but the Sentinels never budge. And they never allow any feeling of cold or heat to be seen by anyone.

Do you guard in a blizzard or a bad thunderstorm?

YES, BUT the accomplishment of the mission and welfare of the Soldier is never put at risk. The Tomb Guards have contingencies that are ready to be executed IF the weather conditions EVER place the Soldiers at risk of injury or death – such as lightning, high winds, etc. This ensures that Sentinels can maintain the Tomb Guard responsibilities while ensuring soldier safety. It is the responsibility of the Chain of Command from the Sergeant of the Guard to the Regimental Commander to ensure mission accomplishment and soldier welfare at all times.

It was erroneously reported that during Hurricane Isabel, the Sentinels were ordered to abandon their posts for shelter and that they refused. No such order was ever given. All proper precautions were taken to ensure the safety of the Sentinels while accomplishing their mission. Risk assessments are constantly conducted by the Chain of Command during changing conditions to ensure that soldier welfare is maintained during mission accomplishment.

The Unknown Soldier thing was cool, but I'm getting really tired of the constant talk about the storm.

Just wait until winter b/c the Weather Channel is now going to start naming nearly every storm that creates some snow with a name so that they can hype it up as the end of the world.

Yeah, 'cause it's not really a big deal, right?

Also, as much as I like the picture, it's not from Hurricane Sandy (courtesy of a friend that just informed me of as much): http://www.idigitaltimes.com/article...photo-fake.htm

I actually imagine it's much, much worse today. Though I remember the storm in September that it was taken from
