I'm hoping this hard drive enclosure helps my problems. I'll find out in a couple hours.
A lot of games use it to automatically upload newest game saves to the cloud. If your hard drive were to become corrupted or something else that would cause the data to be lost, you could just copy the latest saves from the cloud back to your hard drive and not have to restart everything. It's basically a backup.
Yeah basically without it, I'd lose 175 hours of play in my Skyrim save file.

Basically the fix was:
a) Get a HDD Enclosure and format and old SATA drive with your PC.
b) Put that formatted drive into your PS3 and let the system format and run a system update.
c) Shut off the PS3, swap in your current hard drive
d) Update to the latest system software.
And the best part, I didn't lose any data. Won't have to re-download all of the PSN games and etc.
Well, yeah. That's why I haven't done it so far. I guess I really meant "set it with the games I care about". Obviously I'm not going to set it for PSN I don't give two craps about. But right now I'm really selective about what I manually copy up there. With a full gig, I can be a little less selective.
I'm still not likely to do it for, say, NCAA (because other than the profile and roster, most stuff can be re-created easily enough, and all those Heisman Challenge files would take up a ton of space), but like Ratchet & Clank? Or ME3 when I get it? Easier just to set those to the cloud.

Sony's never been that great about keeping redesigned video game hardware a secret, so it's no surprise that the much rumored PlayStation 3 model debuted this evening at Tokyo Game Show.
Sleeker and slimmer, the new PS3 comes in "charcoal black," but Japan gets the super-special "classic white" option. Sony says that the internal volume and weight of the new PS3 is less than half of the original system. It's 20 percent and 25 percent less volume/weight compared to the current PS3 Slim.
Different regions will see different versions of the systems along with different prices.
North America
250GB - $269 (Bundle Only) - September 25th
500GB - $299 - October 30th
Europe and PAL Territories
Flash Memory 12GB - 229 Euros - October 12th
500GB - 299 Euros - September 28th
Japan
250GB - 24,900 Yen - October 4th
500GB - 29,800 Yen - October 4th

Going back to the top loading drive, huh?
I don't see the point of this really. It's virtually the same price, so why even bother wasting time manufacturing the new design? Oh well, I don't need to buy one. I'm already on my 4th and just a month ago it became the first one to last more than a year and a week, and it's still chugging right along. Knock on wood.
Everyone tells me I have the opposite happen of what happens for everyone else. I've had 2 360s and I've never had one break. I had a launch 360 last me clear up until I got my Gears of War 3 version slim last winter and the only reason I upgraded at that point was because of an amazing deal. It was still working just fine and so far my Gears one has been great...no problems.
On the flip side, I had a launch PS3 die after a year a couple days. I had another fat model die after a year and a few days. I then even went as far as having a slim die after only a year and 5 or 6 days. It was the bluray drive each and every single time. That's one of the reasons I can't wait until Microsoft and Sony both start becoming more accepting of digital content delivery.
