    Nick Saban's 2001 LSU Defense

I was bored last night and started looking for some defensive playbooks. I came across this on another site. Very good read, but long.

Was wondering if anyone has anymore?

i'm just saying because he mentioned having stuff like this. I wouldnt mind linking to a few myself. I wonder how many you can find online?

I know you probably cant find one from as recent as last year? but i'm surprised you can at all the way they treat these things like government secrets ?

It is crazy how in depth these guys get in these things. Very detail oriented, which makes them as good as they are. They take nothing for granted.

I've got all of Saban's available playbooks 1997 MSU, 2001 LSU and 2008 Bama along with the entire season defensive cut-ups of the 2008 and 2009 teams, Belichick's playbooks and the old NYG playbooks (all of its the same defense basically). It is all very detailed indeed - I've studied these defenses pretty extensively and know them pretty well along with TCU's 425 defense. The biggest thing to learning these defenses is understanding the terminology.

Yeah, I read about 75 pages last night and I found myself going back to double check the terminology. Fairly simple defense from what I can tell, but very dependent on EVERYONE being on the same page and doing their job. Also seems like the Mike has a good deal of responsibility making calls.

There is a lot going on pre-snap but that's because the defense has a built in adjustment for everything it could face. Mike sets the front, SS sets formation strength and force calls and the FS calls the coverage - each of these players has a series of checks based upon what the offense is presenting: formation, shift, motion, splits etc.

Yeah, I read that and thought that was pretty interesting. I also liked the color coding for formations.(ex. Purple for 5 wide)

I have a few coaching strategies books that I go through from time to time, as right now I am only assisting in coaching in my son's pop warner teams. Hopefully when I get done with school in a few years, I will be able to have enough free time to be an actual coordinator or head coach. It is nice to learn the actual terminology instead of just knowing what they should do.

The playbook for the 1992 Bills K-Gun offense goes very in-depth about how the team will huddle. I can get though that part, but there are definitely other places in that playbook that go waaaaaaaaaaay over my head.

Yeah, Saban shows where everyone is to be in the huddle and who is to talk. It is actually quite funny.

scribd.com has a lot of playbooks too, though unfortunately there's a lot of non-football related stuff that comes up when you search "playbook". It's where I found the Bills playbook though.
