The Mountain West Conference loses Utah and BYU this season and will lose TCU next season. Meanwhile, Boise State joins the conference in 2011 and Nevada, Fresno State and Hawaii are on their way in 2012. Clearly, the time has come for the conference to re-think their brand and image.
On Monday the Mountain West Conference will unveil a new brand direction and conference identity. While a name change could be possible that remains uncertain. A new conference logo though appears to be a foregone conclusion. The conference's Twitter account has changed for the time being to a design that could be a hint of the next design. The design features cracks in a rock that appear to have a rough outline for what could be the conference's new logo.
The conference continues to hope that they can make a push for an automatic BCS bid and will need a strong season in 2011 to further their case. Having TCU and Boise State helps but the rest of the conference leaves a lot to be desired following the departures of Utah and BYU. And keep in mind that TCU is leaving after this season. Despite what the conference is losing there is a growing amount of support to see the MWC obtain an automatic spot in the BCS.
But for now the conference is focused on their own image and not what everyone else thinks of them.
Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson will speak with the media at a press event to unveil the new conference identity and direction Monday, as well as conduct phone interviews later in the day.
