    Hauppage HD PVR with HDMI?

I'm currently in the process of making the switch of my PS3 from standard def to my new HD monitor.

I know some people use the Hauppage HD PVR to record their gaming in HD and they make EXCELLENT youtube/highlight videos.

I really want to do this. However, my monitor only has an HDMI plugin and from what I can tell the Hauppage PVR only has component. I did some google/youtube searching and apparently there are Component to HDMI converter boxes that people use with the Hauppage to record their games.

#1 Does anyone here use a converter box to get HDMI? If so, what converter box do you use?

#2 Are there any similar products to the PVR that you can record using HDMI?

Any suggestions/help as always will be greatly appreciated!

Never looked at the component to HDMI converter so can't help you there. As for other products, you're pretty much out of luck. The only option is the BlackMagic Intensity but there are two problems, #1 you'll need to have a really high-end PC in order to capture & edit the video and #2 HDMI has copyright protection for certain sources, not sure if video games would fall under that but certainly any movies and likely TV shows.

The second is likely the main reason that others haven't built and HDMI version of the HD-PVR.

Yeah considering my desktop is 5+ years old now I'll prob just have look at the converter. There are several youtube videos of people doing it but I just cannot tell what brand/manufacturer they are using. Also one guy said something about having to use something different to get sound with his converter.

CLW, you can't use the PS3's HDMI to record HD. At least you couldn't in the past. The PS3 encodes the HDCP signal, which your TV can decode, but all HDMI capture devices I'm aware of can't.

See this thread for info: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=119055

If you can find somewhere that documents using HDMI with the PS3, go for it, but everything I've seen said no go.

Yeah after looking around it appears these so called converter boxes are sketchy at best. Looks like I will go without a capture card for the foreseeable future.

From reading their descriptions, this Component to VGA converter might work and this Component to HDMI converter might work. Obviously I've not tested either of them so I can't give first hand descriptions but the way they're designed, they should do what you're wanting to do. One caveat though is that it sounds like there may be some resolution restrictions (ie restricted to only 720P or something).

For both of them, you'd go PS3 Component out > HD-PVR > Converter > Monitor.

Yeah I've seen several and there are mixed reviews/reports on whether those things work or not. I'm leary of spending $200 + for something that may or may not work.
