Gearbox okay's fan-made Duke Nukem 3D using Unreal Engine

    http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/70...ficial-OK.html

Duke Nukem 3D is coming back, in newly re-awesomed form. Frederick "fresch" Schreiber, a longtime fan of Duke and games in general, has begun reworking the game in the Unreal Engine 3, and unlike many fan-made projects, this one has the blessings of the rights holder of Duke.

After he contacted the company, Gearbox decided to support the project by giving Schreiber a personal, non-commercial license to Duke Nukem 3D. That means he can use the properties from the game (characters, level designs, etc.) as long as he doesn't profit from it directly.

Kudos to Gearbox. I can't imagine how terrible it would be to update an older game as a labor of love only to be told that I couldn't release it because the person who owned the rights to it was being difficult.

We don't have word right now on when it's going to be finished, but the initial look at the game in the screenshots is very promising. Check out the YouTube video below:

If I could quote Duke Nukem himself on the next-gen upgrade by this fan....

    "Damn, I look good"

Until this actually gets any further, I'll just put it in the same classification of Black Mesa Source and expect it to never be released.
