With the impending zombie apocalypse I decided to start getting in shape. After 9 months now I've lost 75lbs and corrected my high cholesterol all w/o any drugs. I eat 1200 calories a day, walk at least 2 miles a day, and lift weights for 20 minutes.

I am no longer a waking candy store!! ...prolly still a candy machine though. :fdown:

New Bird-Flu Study Shows Virus's Pandemic Potential

In a new experiment showing how the virus that causes bird flu might spark a human pandemic, scientists induced five genetic changes in the bug, transforming it into a type capable of airborne transmission between mammals.

The findings signal how the virus, which has killed nearly 60% of about 600 people known to have been infected in more than a dozen countries since 2003, could pose a much greater public-health risk in the future. Two of the mutations the scientists created already circulate in birds and people, and natural evolution could bring about the remaining three, researchers said.

The findings appear in the journal Science, which on Thursday published several papers and commentaries about the virus—also known as H5N1. The studies were funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and other groups.

The genetic-alteration paper in Science is one of two experiments whose planned publication sparked fears it would give terrorists a blueprint for making a biological weapon. The first such paper described an alternative genetic technique for creating a pandemic version of H5N1 and appeared in Nature in May.

A government advisory panel that had recommended against the papers' being made public reversed course after learning about findings in the work that could help health agencies better monitor for bird flu. If officials know which bird-flu genetic signatures to look for, they can obtain swabs from people infected with H5N1 and see whether the critical mutations have started to accumulate.

The flu-surveillance benefit of the research "far outweighs the risk of nefarious" use posed by terrorists or anyone else pursuing a biological-weapons program, said Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the NIH. Dr. Fauci and NIH director Francis Collins co-authored one of the commentaries in Science examining the benefits and risks of flu research.

The authors of the latest studies cautioned they can't predict when or if the remaining three genetic mutations might emerge. Nor are these the only possible mutations that could start a pandemic, they said. "We only know that it's within the realm of possibility that the [three mutations] could evolve in a human or other mammalian host," said Derek Smith of the University of Cambridge. In one of the Science papers, co-authored by Dr. Smith, a 15-year analysis of surveillance data found that two of the five mutations seen in the lab-engineered viruses had occurred in several existing bird flu strains.

The H5N1 virus can move from birds to people through close contact. But it isn't yet efficient at jumping from person to person, a necessary ingredient for triggering a pandemic.

In the experiment published in Nature in May, scientists combined H5N1 and swine flu and came up with a hybrid bug that could leap from mammal to mammal. That experiment was based on the long-held notion that a pandemic strain is more likely to emerge when a flu virus mixes its genes with another virus in an animal host, such as a pig. But one of the Science studies suggests that such "re-assortment" may not be necessary to give rise to a pandemic strain, and that it might emerge from mutations in H5N1 alone.

Scientists first changed three amino acid molecules of H5N1 in a way they believed would boost the bug's affinity for human hosts, then infected ferrets with the mutated virus. Ferrets are a good model because they sneeze like humans and show similar symptoms when infected by flu.

The researchers swabbed the noses of the infected ferrets and used virus samples from their bodies to infect another round of ferrets, thus "passaging" the virus several times through different ferrets. At each stage, they took tissue samples from the ferrets to see how H5N1 was evolving.

"After about 10 passages, we found the virus had acquired the ability to transmit" from animal to animal, said Ron Fouchier of the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and study co-author. That suggests that "in humans it would take a low number of transmissions for the mutations to accumulate."

Five mutations gave the virus the ability to jump from ferret to ferret: three of the initial amino-acid changes; plus two that emerged through evolutionary selection in the animals' bodies.

Four of the genetic substitutions were in hemagglutinin, a protein on the surface of H5N1 that helps it to enter host cells. The fifth was in the polymerase 2, a protein that helps the virus replicate its genetic material.

Most of the infected ferrets recovered from the lab-made virus. The animals succumbed only when large doses of the mutant virus were introduced directly into their throats.Experiments also suggested the engineered virus responded to an antiviral drug and to antibodies from ferrets that had received experimental H5N1 vaccines. People infected with H5N1 are treated with antivirals.

WACO, Texas — A Texas man is charged with eating the family dog.

Police in Waco arrested 22-year-old Michael Daniel on Monday.

Family members called police on June 14th, saying Daniel assaulted people at the home, chased a neighbor and started barking and growling.

According to police, what happened next is horrific.

Witnesses say Daniel grabbed the family dog, beat and strangled it…then started to eat it. The dog died at the home.

Daniel is believed to have been on a bad trip from ingesting “K-2,” a synthetic drug.

He was taken to the hospital and now faces a felony charge for animal cruelty.

Well, then it's back to the pacific. We don't want to go east coast, gulf coast or Caribbean, because we'd be getting bent over every year by hurricanes and tropical storms. While there's still typhoons in the pacific, the risk would be a lot less of getting thrashed by one. We could always occupy Alcatraz. :D Just would have to raid some Lowe's and Home Depots on the way so we could do some remodeling once we get there.

And we could use some of the cells as isolation and holding areas for any people who wander onto the island from the mainland after San Francisco and the rest of California fall. Wouldn't it make more sense to be on a farm or something with large fields to see the zombies coming from a long way away (ala Walking Dead Season 2)?

Granted, being on the edge of water is definitely an excellent idea as well. I think closer to the ocean the better really. Sure, there's the possibility of more zombie sightings, but the ocean is a basically never ending supply of fish and other sea life that would allow us to survive MUCH longer than several hundred cows that require VERY special knowledge to be able to raise properly (believe me, I looked that shit up and it's as complicated as fuck to do correctly and requires round the clock work to be a stable food source).

While I'd be all about cows and having beef to eat, fish out of the Pacific Ocean would be a more sustainable food source. Of course, the inability to fish from the shore poses an issue.

I dont see any damn description that indicates there is something that moves / a sliding gate. The picture isnt that specific.

it must have been built in some hurricane/tornado area because people like me in California dont pay attention to that stuff because we dont need to :)

Or we could just keep running/limping along until it gets to the point that we very well are about to be overrun, then see who has the fastest gun.

That was the only problem I had with that episode of TWD. Shane and Otis still had a decent amount of ground between them and the walkers and it wasn't like the group of walkers were running at them. Shane and Otis had enough time to sit there rolling around on the ground fighting over the backpack after Shane shot Otis, and Shane to get up and start limping away in the same direction they had already been going in, before the walkers finally reached and started devouring Otis. If they had just kept going, who knows, they could have possibly made it back to the truck before being overtaken by the walkers.

Not until we pretty much get overrun, just until it's clear that both of us aren't going to make it alive. Shane and Otis still had a chance of making it out of there together alive. I still say we should go to fucking Alcatraz. It's a goddamn prison on an island, what more could we want? Raid some Lowe's and Home Depots on the way to pick up supplies and transform that bitch into living quarters and a command center.

The various hallways and entryways already secured with bars from the prison will provide EXCELLENT security if somehow one of those fuckers ever made it onto the island, as well as from any random survivors (or ram) that show up in the middle of the night. We'd have isolation cells in case any of you fuckers go crazy or some of those other survivors show up in the middle of the night and we don't trust their asses.

Terraform some of the land there into grass and farmland, so we can grow crops, have a baseball diamond or football field. There's already designated areas for exercise yards, kitchens, etc. You got guard towers around the entire perimeter for additional security and sniper capabilities.

For traveling back and forth to the mainland (or up the west coast to pick up some of the cows in Washington), go and steal a boat from the SF harbor. Send some people up the coast to bring back a bunch of cows.

When we need guns and ammo, Fort Bragg is only 160-some miles up the coast, right there on the damn coast (so take the boat), Vandenberg AFB is 280-some miles down the coast (again, take the boat since it's right there on the damn coast). Point Mugu Naval Complex is 370-some miles down the coast (again on the coast so take the boat) and Camp Pendleton which is 470 miles (again take the boat since it's on the coast). While they're inland, you also have Edwards AFB and Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms (hello fucking tanks for any trips over land we'd need to make) down around there as well.
