View Full Version : Presentation - First Round: Better Celebrations vs. Dynamic Weather & Effects
As always, vote for the item you prefer. However, also state how you would like both features implemented into the game and indicate any elements you would (or would not) like to see added for each item.
Better Individual & Team Celebrations/Animation (Post-play)
While NCAA Football 12 took huge strides in player and team animations, the game still lacks seamlessness and proper emotion in this area.
Post-score, players in the endzone are often lacking proper emotion. Even when a more fitting animation plays, the focus remains on the player too long before cutting to the replay and proper team celebration cutscene. Having players show more and proper emotion upon a score and a quicker transition to the replay would help to develop a seamless and proper celebration from the individual score to the team celebration.
Post-play, players engage in many similar animations and seem to lack emotion and connection to the game. There is rare interaction among players and acknowledgement of players in the area. In Madden NFL 12, players frequently ‘talk’ (mouth movement) in post-play, giving a feeling of on-field awareness. By comparison, in NCAA Football players seem to rarely ‘talk.’
Added in NCAA Football 10, Convoy Celebrations added a sense of awareness by fellow teammates on the way into the endzone. It appears to have since been removed from the game.
This item also includes incorrect animations playing, such as wide receivers signaling that they were not guilty of pass interference and that the pass was incomplete. (Hands up, then signaling pass incomplete.)
Dynamic/Progressive Weather & Effect on Play
Taking The Weather Channel Feed feature to a new level, this addition would see weather change in-game, similar to progressive lighting in NCAA Football 11. The feature could exist by either checking the TWC feed between each quarter and then changing in game or the Weather tab would have options such as ‘Rain to Snow’, ‘Clear to Cloudy’, ‘Snow at Start (ending later)’, etc. This could also see more noticeable field degradation (especially in extreme weather conditions) and weather have more of an effect on play. For example: high temperatures could lead to quicker player fatigue, heavy rains could lead to increased field degradation and slipping as play progresses, heavy snow could accumulate in stadium corners, etc. Schools/stadiums in high elevation (Colorado, Wyoming, etc.) could see slightly increased effects in fatigue, particularly for road teams and/or less athletic teams/players on both squads.

Dynamic/Progressive Weather & Effect on Play
As much as I'd like to see better celebrations after a play, even a "detail freak" like me ends up skipping cut-scenes in the game eventually. I would rather see variable weather that has a measured effect on both the visuals of the game and the gameplay first.

Absolutely, 100% Dynamic/Progressive Weather & Effect on Play.
This is no contest whatsoever for me. We must get Dynamic/Progressive Weather & Effect on Play in this game. It's just not the same without it.

I would like to see better celebrations. But, I would love to see Dynamic Weather. I would like to see it Heavy Snow turn into light snow by 4th quarter, same with rain or fog. Heck, I forgot Fog was even in the game until I just wrote that. I would like to see wind have a effect on passing game. I would like to see rating drops in bad weather.

Close call, I really want both since they are both badly needed. I just hope they get rid of that seizure on the ground looking celebration that happen way too much. It also would be cool seeing the QB yell at his linemen if he constantly keep getting sacked or lay into his WR for constantly dropping the ball. Also would want to see head coach slamming his headset into the ground after his team makes a very stupid play.

 This has been missing far too long. Even if they have to do it on a quarter by quarter basis. Would love to see a game that starts out with green field that gets covered with snow as it progresses. I remember NFL Blitz games used to do this from back in the PS One days.

Yep. I want to see games where it starts of raining and as the game progresses (not on the quarter by quarter basis, but literally in the middle of the game, in the middle of a quarter, the rain lightens up, and maybe the sun starts to peak out. Or maybe start off cloudy and middle of the 1st quarter, a light snow starts to fall, and as the game goes on, it grows progressively heavier and the field starts covering up more and more with snow.
Or even fog. Instead of having the game just start foggy, maybe start out with normal weather, then as you get later into the game, have the fog start coming in and building up from a light or barely noticeable fog, to the point where it's so thick you can barely see the stands and the fans by the middle of the 3rd quarter. Stuff like that. It would be incredible to see changes to the weather like that as the game goes on.

Dynamic/Progressive Weather & Effect on Play
These guys nailed things I'd like to see here so I won't go over it all again. Well said guys.

Improved celebration. EA would mess up the dynamic weather and fatigue i can see it now

Dynamic Weather, anything that has "effect on field" is going to win out when it comes to presentation for me.

Went with dynamic weather. Much more important and it is non-existent now. Every game plays pretty much the same, which we know isn't the case on the real field when 30mph winds are blowing or it is a downpour and guys struggle to hang onto the ball, much less throw it or keep traction.
I skip most cutscenes anyway, so give me gameplay.

ahh come on guys. better celebrations.
question: would this only be cutscenes, or real time animations like in nba and mlb 2k? i love the real time presentation in those games. makes the game way more authentic. dynamic weather is nice, but doesn't seem as much as a necessity to me as realistic post play interaction. i hate seeing everyone doing that same "move out of the way" bump after every play.

All things being equal, I'd vote for dynamic weather. But I was thinking about this the other day, and it was because of Forza 4. In the Ars Technica review of Forza 4, they mentioned that one reason Forza 4 doesn't have dynamic weather or transitions from day to night is because of frame rate concerns. We've long heard that X or Y isn't in NCAA because of frame-rate concerns, whether that be the chain gang, better sidelines or what-have-you. So I've soured a bit on dynamic weather, simply because of the amount of tuning it takes, graphically, to keep the frame rate at full speed while weather effects are being splashed on your screen.
I guess what I'd rather see is take the existing weather and make it have a tangible effect on gameplay, and then give us better celebrations rather than giving us dynamic weather.
The main thing I want to see from celebrations (and cutscenes in general) are more variety. I don't like that when a new cutscene/celebration is added, it seems to directly take away a cutscene that we had last year. Perhaps it's partly an effect to avoid the "recycled" problem that plagues commentary, but I'd rather see one old and one new, to use an extreme example, than only one new.

For weather it would be cool if they let us pick the start time of the game you are playing in dynasty mode. The weather changes during each game by cdj would be nice too.

This. Nothing takes away from immersion more than seeing guys mindlessly bumping into each other between plays, or scoring the game winning touchdown and not really seeing that level of emotion from the players or scoring the tenth TD in a blowout and seeing guys celebrate like it was a game winner.
Dynamic Weather with an effect on the field would be cool but seriously how often do you see that happen in real life? How many snow games get played per year? Compare that to how many times we see guys bumping into each other after plays or not reacting appropriately to the situation in NCAA. Thats the reason I chose better clebrations.
I'd also like it if they added more control for celebrations. Why not be able to map specific celebrations to each button instead of just team, single player or mascot? These can be tied to user profiles. Keep team celebrations as a pre-defined button, have one set as a random celebration button and allow the other six buttons to be mapped.

I went with the dynamic weather. The main kicker here is effect on the play. I could care less about celebrations when I button through them 95% of the time.

All the time actually, rain obviously more than snow. Here's a prime example of the PSU/LSU Capital One bowl 3 years ago. The game was an absolute mess and the end of the game the field was a mess -

Celebrations got a lot better in NCAA 12, but they still don't seem to capture the emotion of college football (or even sports gaming, for that matter). However, I think they aren't too far off from getting this one right.
Dynamic Weather got my vote. Having expansive and game-affecting weather would add another unique element to account for in each match-up. While some conditions are rare, they can help make certain games (especially close battles) become very memorable, such as the Capital One Bowl in the post above. All sports games are already 'limited' in the experience by following the rules of the sport. (They can't move the locale or add new weapons like Halo or Resistance can in each iteration.) The new/unique environment in football games is the weather so expanding this can help make games have a new feel for those who play numerous seasons in Dynasty Mode.

As much fun as that might be to do once-in-a-blue-moon ... imagine if that had the potential to happen once per season. That would be ... ugh. And thinking big picture, that would be a significant amount of resources to spend if it didn't happen frequently, so I would expect it to happen more in the game than real life.
Ew.

True, but that was an example of a extreme and rare case, but we do see rain and elements effects games all the time(just maybe not to the extend that I posted). It would just be nice to see in a rain game the field to get tore up more and maybe some slips or bad passes. Obviously not the extreme cases all the time. I like the idea of going off of live weather and then in that case if it is truly a torrential downpour outside, don't play your game.
