You're in luck. TCU managed to hold off LSU, .994 to .989. That sets up #1 Oklahoma vs. #2 TCU for the National Championship, which is also, A REMATCH! Back on the very first week of the season, TCU beat Oklahoma (thus handing the Sooners their only loss of the year), 42-17.

Any chance you could look at UCF's schedule? Did they beat anyone worth mentioning because it's utter bullshit that they aren't higher up.

Not too happy about the rematch then. UCF should have their chance damn it!

Also, NICE! You got a First Team All-American! I'm willing to bet that's the first time a FIU player has ever been on that list.

And, out of curiosity, what where the stats for the Heisman candidates? Utah's QB winning all of those awards is pretty amazing. He must have had an incredible year.

I know, that caught me by surprise. I was glad to see someone show up on there. And I'm willing to bet that as well. In fact, just sort of briefly looking through the last two or three years of All-American teams, FIU's not on them anywhere, not even with T.Y. Hilton, so I'd say that Jerrico Lee is the first FIU player ever on it.

I'm about to start typing up the Bowl Rundown schedule. If I counted correctly, 70 teams are bowl eligible. 34 bowls in the game, 68 slots, 2 teams are getting screwed this year.

WOW! 5-7 Florida is going to the Hawaii Bowl. That means 3 teams somehow got screwed out of a bowl game. Those teams were:

    Idaho - 7-5 (3-2)
    San Jose State - 7-5 (3-2)
    Hawaii - 6-6 (2-3)

And, with a 5-7 Florida team getting into a bowl game, that means the SEC has 11 teams playing in bowl games.

Well, they get a chance to show their record isn't a fluke, as they play #3 LSU in the Sugar Bowl.

Oh yeah, and it's Arkansas State's turn to get bent over by USC in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl this year.

Thanks man. Kinda looks like what happened this year with Griffin III and Luck but with Wynn and Phillips. Interesting stuff.

Yeah, I think I might end up staying at Florida International for a lot longer than just 3 years. My original plan was to play out the contract with FIU, then bolt for greener pastures, but I think I might be hanging around for a while with these guys.

I don't know. UCF is rated B+ across the board, so they're not too far behind LSU in ratings. And looking at the rankings, this should be a good one.

    R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl

    Game Notes

--- After a successful year, going 9-3 on the season, 7-1 in the Sun Belt Conference, and winning our second ever conference championship, we are entering our third ever bowl game in team history, also third consecutive bowl game. Looking back at our brief bowl history, we won our first time back in 2010 in the Little Caesars Bowl, beating Toledo 34-32 in a last second thriller. Last season, in our second bowl game, we faced the Trojans of USC in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, and went home with a 40-10 blowout loss. This year, we enter our third straight bowl game, also yet another new bowl game, this time playing SMU in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. SMU enters with a 7-5 record, 6-3 in Conference-USA action, where they finished in 5th place in the conference, 3rd in the West Division. Seeing as the bowl game is played in the Superdome, weather would not be a factor in this game. Being it was a bowl game, our last game of the year, and the last game our seniors would ever play in a FIU uniform, we broke out the alternate unis, wearing our black jerseys instead of our traditional navy home jerseys. SMU won the coin toss and elected to kick, getting the game underway.

After a touchback, our offense came out ready to go to work. Looking to test out SMU's defense on this first drive of the game, we took a crack at them on the ground on the first two plays, gaining only 3 yards in the end, signifying that yards via rushing were not going to come as easily as they had in our game against UL Lafayette. A 5 yard pass from Jake Medlock to Darrian Mallary, who finally returned after being injured the last couple games, on 3rd and 6 resulted in the first punt of the game. SMU came out throwing punches, as Conner Preston connected with Keenan Holman for a 30 yard pass on SMU's first offensive play of the day, advancing the ball to our 32 yard line. The drive would quickly end for SMU however, as on the next play, Preston threw an interception to Terrance Taylor, giving us the ball back on our 10 yard line. Trying to prove that anything they could do, we could do better, we used passes of 19, 26, 19 and 6 yards to move the ball clear down to the SMU 22 yard line, before a pass attempt on 3rd and 4 bounced right off the hands of Mallary, forcing Jack Griffin to kick a 39 yard field goal, giving us a 3-0 lead with 5:31 left in the quarter.

SMU went right back to the air on their next drive, advancing the ball 27 yards to their own 47 yard line, before an incomplete pass on 3rd and 5 forced the Mustangs to punt the ball away yet again. Unfortunately, it was a very quick three and out for us, before we had to punt the ball back. This time, SMU would not be stopped by our defense, using passes of 9, 9, 17 and 8 yards, along with an 11 yard rush (SMU's first run of the game) before Preston found Darius Johnson in the back of the end zone for an 8 yard touchdown, giving SMU the 7-3 lead with 2:42 left in the first quarter. With a 26 yard pass to Domonique Rhymes on 2nd and 10, Medlock passed Wesley Carroll's team record for most passing yards in a season with 3,865 yards, breaking Carroll's old record of 3,859 yards. Two plays later, Medlock threw up a deep pass to Jacob Younger, trying to retake the lead, only to have it intercepted by SMU's cornerback Robert Mojica, giving the Mustangs the ball back on their own 3 yard line. SMU at first appeared destined to punt, as a 4 yard rush and an incomplete pass had them facing 3rd and 6, then everything collapsed. A 15 yard pass gave the Mustangs a first down, a pass interference penalty on our defense gave them another first down, a 37 yard pass on 3rd and 2 gave them a new set of downs on our 17 yard line, and after a pair of rushes set up 3rd and 3 on our 10 yard line, a 10 yard pass from Preston to Jeremy Johnson gave the Mustangs another touchdown and a 14-3 lead as the clock ran out on the first quarter.

Trying to get back into the game, and avoid having it turn into the 2012 version of our bowl game against USC last year, our offense quickly went back to the air, as Medlock connected with Glenn Coleman for a 26 yard pass on first down, getting us quickly out to our 42 yard line. A 29 yard pass to Rhymes got us a new set of downs at the SMU 29 yard line. A pair of short passes to Jeremiah Harden on 2nd and 3rd downs, and we had another 1st down on the SMU 16 yard line. Two plays later, Medlock found Younger at the 1 yard line next to the sideline, who caught it and backed into the end zone for a 16 yard touchdown pass, closing SMU's lead to 14-10 with 7:22 left in the second quarter. Our defense managed to hold SMU on their next drive, thanks in part to a sack for a loss of 7 yards, nullifying the 6 yard gain the Mustangs had got on 1st down, and causing the 8 yard gain on 3rd down to not be enough for the 1st down, forcing the Mustangs to punt the ball away after just three plays.

After our offense went three and out and punted the ball back, SMU was only able to gain 9 yards on their next drive, before facing 4th and 1 from our 39 yard line. The Mustangs attempted the 56 yard field goal, but it ended up falling well short of the goal post, starting our next drive at our own 39 yard line. A 21 yard pass to Rhymes on 3rd and 10, followed immediately by an 18 yard pass to Younger, and we had a first down on the SMU 22 yard line. Two incomplete passes later, and Medlock was attempting a pass to Rhymes on 3rd and 10, only to have two defenders converge on Rhymes, one of them intercepting the ball for a second time at the SMU 5 yard line. However, a flag on the play was called for defensive pass interference, which we accepted, giving us the ball back, 1st and goal, on the SMU 7 yard line, a 14 yard penalty in the end against the defense. A quick pass by Medlock to tight end Yakeem Griner got the ball clear down to the goal line, setting up Mallary to try and take it in from 1 yard out. That however would not happen, as the defense instantly broke through our line, tackling Mallary for a loss of 2 yards. An incomplete pass attempt to Younger on 3rd and goal, and we were forced to attempt a field goal from 19 yards out, which Griffin converted to make it 14-13 with 3:34 left in the half. Aided by a 28 yard kickoff return, SMU needed only 5 plays to respond, as Preston completed passes of 16, 13, 23 and 18 yards to make it 21-13 with only a minute falling off the clock.

Another three and out, and our offense was forced to punt it back with 1:59 left to play. A 33 yard pass on 3rd and 10 from SMU's 30 yard kept their drive alive, along with passes of 10 and 5 yards, before Preston hit Derek Longoria for a 22 yard touchdown pass, making it 28-13 SMU with 1:02 left until halftime. A 47 yard pass to Coleman on 2nd and 10 gave our offense new life, giving us a new set of downs on the SMU 29 yard line with 39 seconds left to play. After a quick timeout, Medlock found Rhymes wide open in the middle of the field for a 29 yard touchdown pass, making it 28-20 SMU with 34 seconds left to play. That touchdown pass was also a record setter, as Medlock broke a second school record previously held by Carroll in this game, throwing his 21st touchdown pass of the season, besting the previous best of 20 by Carroll last year. Three and out by SMU gave us the ball back on our 29 yard line with 2 seconds left to play. We attempted a hail mary, which Younger was able to haul in, but he wasn't able to outrun the defense, getting initially caught up on his own teammate, resulting in the pass only going for a gain of 31 yards. With that, the clock ran out and we hit halftime, SMU leading 28-20.

SMU got the ball to start the second half, and things seemed to had not changed at all, as the Mustangs started the half with a 13 yard pass, then Preston connected on another 13 yard pass, this time on 3rd and 12, but SMU ultimately was forced to punt just three plays later after an incomplete pass on 3rd and 4. Knowing that the air was the only way we were going to win today, as our running game was having no a single shred of success all game, Medlock aired it out right off the bat, connected with Younger, who broke loose from his defender and ran down the sideline before finally being brought down by the safety, but not after the play had gone for a gain of 57 yards, giving us first down on the SMU 23 yard line. The very next play, a blitz by the SMU defense left Rhymes open and uncovered over the middle, resulting in a 23 yard touchdown pass from Medlock. Coach Cristobal, knowing we needed to get things evened up, elected to go for the two point conversion. A quick throw to Younger in the back corner of the end zone, and it was all tied up, 28-28 with 7:11 to play in the third quarter.

This sudden change of momentum seemed to derail SMU's offense, as they only managed a single 8 yard pass on their next drive, before being forced to punt of 4th and 2. Seeking to take advantage of the situation, we went right back into the air, where on 2nd down, our offense got some help from SMU's defense. Blown coverage on the play resulted in Coleman being left uncovered, who caught a pass from Medlock and was able to pick up 30 yards before being tackled, advancing the ball out to our 46 yard line. A 22 yard pass to Rhymes, a pair of passes to Mallary for 5 and 6 yards, and a 12 yard pass to Griner, gave us 1st and goal on the SMU 8 yard line. A blitz by damn near the entire SMU defense, left Mallary uncovered coming out of the backfield, to which Medlock completed a pass to for 7 yards, making it 2nd and goal from the SMU 1 yard line. The play however did not come without a cost, as Mallary bruised his sternum on the play, resulting in him being sidelined for a quarter. Remembering the last time we tried to run it in from 1 yard out on 2nd and goal back in the first half, we chose this time to go with a QB sneak, hoping Medlock would be able to fall in to the end zone without an effort. Medlock, like an idiot, fell down too soon, gaining only half a yard, making it 3rd and goal from the half yard line. Choosing to attempt another QB sneak, this time Medlock made sure to actually fall into the end zone for a touchdown, giving us only our second lead all game, 35-28 with 4:17 left to play in the third quarter.

This appeared to waken up SMU's offense. After getting some help via a offside penalty by our defense, the Mustangs got going, completing passes of 9 yards, 14 yards, 7 yards, 25 yards on 3rd and 3, and 11 yards to set up 1st and goal from our 6 yard line. A sack for a loss of 3rd yards on 2nd and goal pushed SMU back to our 8 yard line, which would be crucial, as a 7 yard pass by Preston to Marcus Holyfield on 3rd and goal came up short of the end zone, forcing SMU to settle for a 19 yard field goal, making it 35-31 with 1:55 left in the third quarter. SMU's own defensive play calling once again screwed them, as an engage eight call by SMU's defensive coordinator, allowed Griner to run his route uncovered, to which Medlock connected with him for a 31 yard pass before the defense was finally able to catch up with him and bring him down, giving us a 1st down at the SMU 49 yard line. Sadly, what could have been a touchdown as there was not a defender within 15 yards of Griner when he made the catch, Griner is also a very slow tight end, as opposed to one of my fast wide receivers, resulting in only a 31 yard gain instead of a potential 80 yard touchdown. Griner however made himself useful again, hauling in a 20 yard pass on 2nd and 10, making it 1st down on the SMU 29 yard line. Three plays later however, our drive came to an end as Medlock's pass attempt on 3rd and 4 got knocked down, forcing Griffin to kick a 40 yard field goal, which ended up going wide left, resulting in a completely failed drive. It was beginning to look like another SMU touchdown, as the Mustangs came out firing with passes of 27 and 5 yards, followed by a 15 yard defensive pass interference penalty, as if SMU's offense needs any further help from our defense, and a 7 yard pass, which brought about the end of the third quarter, with us clinging on to a 35-31 lead.

The fourth quarter however brought about the end of SMU's drive, as an incomplete pass on 2nd down, and Preston being sacked for a loss of 11 yards on 3rd down, pushed the Mustangs into a 4th and 13 situation from our 28 yard line. They would attempt a 45 yard field goal, but Marcelo Sada's attempt ended up sailing just to the left of the upright, giving possession back to us with 8:28 left to play in the game and a 4 point lead. A 24 yard pass from Medlock to Griner gave us not only 1st down on the SMU 48 yard line, it also resulted in Medlock's 3rd passing record of the day, as it put him at 578 yards passing for the game, breaking Carroll's previous record of 567 yards set last season. On the very next play, an audible at the line by Medlock resulted in Junior Mertile being left covered one on one along the left sideline, to which Medlock completed a 38 yard pass to Mertile, making it 1st and goal at the SMU 10 yard line. Two incomplete passes and a dropped pass by Coleman in the end zone, and we had to settle for a 27 yard field goal, making it 38-31 with 7:39 left to play. SMU's next offensive drive came and went with little fanfare. An incomplete pass on 1st down, a holding penalty on 2nd down to make it 2nd and 20, followed by two incomplete passes, made SMU punt it on 4th and 20 from their own 10 yard line, just 33 seconds coming off the clock during that drive. Punting so deep in their territory, our offense took over on the field from our own 46 yard line to start our next drive.

Looking to strike immediately and build up a two possession lead, Medlock found Rhymes open for a 22 yard pass on the first play off the possession, advancing the ball to SMU's 33 yard line. Another pass to Rhymes, this time for 19 yards, and it was 1st and 10 on the SMU 14 yard line. A 7 yard pass to make it 2nd and 3, followed by consecutive 2 yard rushes by Mallary, the first running plays our offense had called since the first quarter, and it was 1st and goal from the SMU 3 yard line. A rushing attempt on 1st and goal resulted in a 1 yard loss, making it 2nd and goal from the 4 yard line. On 2nd and goal, Medlock connected with a diving Mertile across the middle of the end zone for a 4 yard touchdown pass, however Griffin missed the extra point, making it 44-31 with 5:03 left to play. SMU tried to find a response, as Preston threw a 21 yard pass to Zach Line on 3rd and 10, giving them first down at the 50 yard line. It was there that everything came crumbling down for the Mustangs, as a false start penalty made it 1st and 15, and on the next play, Preston threw second interception of the day, once again picked off by Terrance Taylor, giving us the ball back on our 44 yard line with 4:17 left in the game. We went exclusively to the ground this drive, trying to chew up as much clock as we could. While we only managed 8 yards, and the drive only lasted 3 plays, we were able to grind the clock down to 2:32 left to play when SMU got the ball back in their possession.

SMU's offense made an effort, as Preston threw a 10 yard pass on 1st down, before giving up a 3 yard sack. On the very next play, Preston connected with Holman for a 32 yard pass, advancing the ball to our 42 yard line. Again, Preston was sacked for a loss of 3 yards, followed by two incomplete passes, forcing SMU into 4th and 13, which Preston responded with a 28 yard pass to Holyfield, getting 1st down and our 16 yard line. A holding penalty pushed the Mustangs back 10 yards, but Preston got it right back with a 10 yard pass, putting them back at the original line of scrimmage. An incomplete pass on 2nd and 10, followed by a 3 yard rush on 3rd and 10, left the Mustangs facing 4th and 6 on our 13 yard line. With our defense covering all of SMU's receivers, and the pass protection breaking down, Preston scrambled for the first down, but was tackled for only a gain of 3 yards, resulting in a turnover on downs, giving us the ball back on our 10 yard line with 56 seconds left to play. We wouldn't be able to run the clock entirely out as SMU still had 2 timeouts, but facing 3rd and 4, Medlock was able to hit Mallary coming out of the backfield for a gain of 6 yards, giving us a first down with 44 seconds left, and sealing the victory with just one kneel by Medlock.

With the win, we end our season with a 10-3 record, the most ever in school history, end the year as Sun Belt Conference Champions and New Orleans Bowl victors. With the loss, SMU drops to 7-6 for the season.

    Stat(s) of the Game:
    - FIU Offense – If Medlock and the receivers didn't have as incredble a game as they did today, we lose by 30+. Also, a huge day passing for Medlock, breaking three of Wesley Carroll's old single game and single season passing records.

    - FIU Defense – What defense? Granted, they made some stops (after halftime) and did just enough to keep us in it while our offense relearned how to move the ball, but for the most part, our defense seemed to be nonexistent today. I will give them credit for shutting out SMU in the 4th quarter, allowing what were only 4 and 13 point leads to stand unchallenged. The defense also managed to sack SMU's quarterback 6 times today, screwing up a couple of their drives, which was a big help.

    - FIU Kicker Jack Griffin – Did good, but wasn't perfect, missing an extra point and a 40 yard field.

Holy crap. That was a hell of a game. First, I think damn sure I was in for a repeat of last year's bowl game against USC when SMU jumped out to a 14-3 and then 28-13 lead. I could feel the noose tightening. Somehow, Medlock and the receivers got hot, our defense made just enough stops, we got that extremely important two point conversion, which was just a MASSIVE momentum flip in the game. After that two point conversion, SMU's offense just seemed lost, while Medlock started completing passes left and right.

It feels good though to get the bowl win. And the stats, my god. If these two teams didn't just set a bunch of bowl game or at least single game records combined, I don't know what it would take after a game like this.

As for records, Medlock now holds the FIU records for most passing yards in a game (674), most passing yards in a season (4539) and most passing TDs in a season (23). The only passing records left untouched, most passing TDs in a career (42) by Josh Padrick (2003-06), most passing TDs in a game (5) by Wesley Carroll (2011) and most passing yards in a career (9237) by Josh Padrick (2003-06). Looking at career stats, Medlock could have a chance at most passing TDs and most passing yards in a career, as Medlock currently has 24 TDs and 4631 yards passing in his career. It's going to depend on how much running we do next year as our new stud HB, Storm Johnson, will be on the field next year after having sat out this year due to transferring in.

And on the national scene, that HUGE game by Medlock, has made him the leading passer in the nation, with 4,539 yards passing, jumping Jordan Wynn of Utah (4364) and Jacob Karam of Texas Tech (4020) to claim the top spot.
