    PH'15: Season 4 Recruiting

Arkansas State signs 7 important targets during their Big Pack weekend in Week 5. With only room for a small class this season, there are 3 more guaranteed to sign and after that, coaches will have to see what kind of room they can make.

Arkansas State coaches were bound & determined to find a big-time Tight End this recruiting class and when they found Williams in their backyard, they put all their effort into signing him. Listed as a blocking TE, he also has great hands and can run over defenders. He's perfect for what the Red Wolves are looking to add to their offense.

Williams will start the moment he steps on campus and will be an instant difference maker.

He received offers from Notre Dame, Tulsa, Alabama, & Florida State.

Like Williams at TE, ASU coaches also wanted to find a stud DT, though moreso for the future and not necessarily have to start immediately. Foster is an excellent DT with very good strength, Power Moves, and the ability to wrap up and make a tackle.

He'll redshirt his first year on campus so that he can work on his ability to find the ball and chase down the ball-carrier.

Foster's other offers were Ole Miss, Arkansas, UCF, & North Texas.

Coaches are impressed with not only Gilmore's coverage abilities but also his ability to take down ball-carrier. He's exactly what ASU was looking for in a project Free Safety... speed, zone coverage, and ability to get off blocks.

He'll redshirt for a year, then play backup for a year, then will likely become the starter as a RS Soph.

Gilmore's other offer was from Cincinnati.
    HB
    #56
    #8HB
With current HB Alex Turner set to graduate after 2017, coaches needed to have a plan in place for his replacement. Rawls has the same tough running that Turner does but has better hands to hold onto the ball.

He'll redshirt for a year but then after that become the change of pace back to compliment Hunter or Simmons' speed.

Rawl's only other offer was from Troy.

Arkansas State wasn't necessarily in search of an LB but after finding Fitzpatrick, they certainly weren't going to turn him away.

He'll redshirt for a year to allow him to work specifically on his ability to wrap-up a tackle. Otherwise, he's a stud.

Fitzpatrick received offers from Arizona and South Florida.
    CB
    HB

Young played both ways in high school as a CB and HB. ASU coaches are intrigued by his running abilities but noticed on film that once defenders got their hands on him, he was going down, though not before punishing them. That said, he'll play CB for the Red Wolves.

He'll redshirt his first year and likely play a reserve role in 2017.

Young also received offers from Tennessee, Texas, and Oregon.
    DE
    OLB

Jones is a tweener between OLB and DE. He plays much better with his hand in the dirt than he does standing up so coaches plan to put him at DE. With great speed, good strength, and very good ability to avoid blockers, he'll be terrorizing the offensive backfield in no time.

Coaches would like to redshirt him for a year but he may be needed for depth purposes as a true Freshman.

Jones also received offers from Arizona State, Texas, LSU, and UCLA.

Strong Safety isn't a position of need given the Badgers are currently 2 deep at the position with both guys being Sophomores. Still Jones could not be passed up on as you can never have too much talent. Coaches see him as in the mold of Kam Chancellor. Jones has all the tools to start out of the gate but will redshirt and likely won't see the field until his Sophomore season, which the time will make him even better. Coaches look forward to his growth.

There was ZERO interest for Jones as no other schools offered him

Wilson won't 'wow' you with this skills or physical abilities but Coaches felt like he had potential to be a solid contributor and possibly starter later in his career. He has balanced blocking ability and with a year or two could definitely be starter material. He will redshirt his Freshman year.

Kentucky also was in the running

With most of the pieces of the offensive line returning in 2017, coaches didn't need to find an immediate starter but wanted to find a big time player for the future. Williams fits in well with very good strength, and all-around good blocking skills.

He'll redshirt his first year on campus to allow him to improve his run blocking skills.

    Williams received no other offers.

With the first of two major recruiting weekends in the books, Kansas coaches are ready to welcome several new prospects to Lawrence. Let's meet them!

    DT
    #423 #32DT
With the KU defense running more and more 4-lineman formations this season, defensive tackle went from a position where depth was important to a major need over the course of the season. Bringing in a player with Brandon Rushing's talent was extremely important for this coaching staff. Rushing brings solid strength, block shedding, pass rush moves, play recognition and form tackling to the Jayhawks defense. While there's no one area in which he excels, his solid abilities across the board will be a boon to the Jayhawk defensive line.

Expect Rushing to play immediately for the Jayhawks, manning the front line with redshirt freshman Kenneth Holley. Rushing chose KU over UCLA and Cal.

While technically not a signee yet, Larry Fields visited Lawrence for the victory over rival Mizzou, and all indications from Fields and sources in the KU program is that he came away very impressed and is expected to announce his commitment within the week. A two-way player in high school, Fields is a very interesting athlete, whom Rivals and Scout have projected as a WR at the next level, though 247 shares the KU coaching staff's assessment that Fields will be best in the defensive backfield, where he can use his receiving skills to become a ball hawk. KU coaches expect fields to play SS at the next level.

With three players in front of him at SS, Fields should redshirt next season and grow into his new position. Fields received no other offers.
    OL
    #280 #45ATH
Quincy Johnson is another player that visited for the victory over Mizzou, and while he has not announced his commitment yet, the 247 Crystal Ball is 100% projected for the Jayhawks. Johnson, however, is a complete unknown. A total enigma. Johnson insists to Kansas coaches, media, and recruitniks across the country that he's an offensive lineman. But nobody has ever seen game film of him playing the position. His Hudl.com recruiting page has no video at all. His high school coaches have confirmed that he does play offensive linemen, but have not commented on why there is no evidence of his pass or run blocking abilities. Kansas coaches do know that Johnson performed well in summer camps in agility and cone drills, as well as in the weight room, but he declined to participate in 1-on-1 blocking drills. Kansas coaches will be waiting until Johnson enrolls next summer to assess his skills and find him a position.

Johnson will choose KU over LSU.
    FS
    #211 #4FS
Trevor Rucker brings an impressive offer sheet and decent coverage skills to Lawrence. Rucker's best quality is his combination of speed, agility and acceleration, which can only grow once he's exposed to a college weight program. Rucker does lack true coverage skills, as his high school technique largely relied on his superior athleticism. Current starter Tyrone Miller will be a senior next season, so Rucker has at least one year to redshirt and grow before he will even see the field.

Rucker chose KU over Houston, Iowa State, Texas Tech, Baylor, Rice, and UTEP.
    DT
    #2011 #141DT
Rasheed Richardson is a body to fill out the defensive line rotation after some subpar recruiting in the last few years has left the position without enough players to rotate. Richardson is impressive at the point of attack, using good strength and block shedding to meet the run head on. However, he will not be chasing any players down in the backfield, so expect Richardson to largely be utilized in taking on double teams. With the signing of Brandon Rushing, Richardson will be able to take a redshirt next year before being called upon.

    Richardson chose KU over Buffalo.
    DE
    OLB

    #1643 #131OLB
Mike Smith is the final player that visited for the victory over Mizzou, and like Johnson and Fields, while he hasn't announced his commitment yet, coaches expect it no later than this week. Smith was originally recruited to fill KU's LEO position, the DE/OLB tweener that plays primarily on standard downs. With the KU staff obviously preferring other formations this season, the LEO position may be eliminated from the Jayhawk lexicon, and Smith may find himself moving to DE full-time. Whether Smith moves to DE or not, expect him to redshirt next season, as neither position has an immediate need.

    Smith received no other offers.

Arkansas State closes out their original Top 10 recruits with the signings of Childress & Foster. Coaches now look to solidify the class the with a few additional signings.

Childress flew under the radar of every program in the country. Severely underrated by scouts, he would have been consensus #1 in the country, however, he only started playing football his senior year; prior to that, he was a track star. With excellent speed, elusiveness combined with a very strong arm and decent accuracy, Childress is the gem of the class for the Red Wolves.

Coaches have decided that despite having a returning starter in place and two good backups behind him, Childress won't redshirt his first year in order to ensure he doesn't transfer. Instead, he'll have packages designed for him in a pseudo-wildcat role.

Childress received no other offers; he had wanted to go to Virginia Tech but coaches wouldn't return his call.

With the upcoming graduating of James Davis, coaches were forced to look for his replacement. And when a strong-footed kicker graduates, why not sign the #1 kicker in the country. Foster has very good strength and good accuracy to go with it.

    Foster received no other offers.

Coaches still aren't quite sure how Waylon Williams arrived on campus for their game against USC... he just sort of showed up on his own. That said, Williams isn't all that flashy, but he is solid at coverage.

He'll redshirt for his first year and after that will likely only be a role player or Dime DB at best.

    Williams received no other offers.

Byrd is another recruit Coaches' are excited to land. He has the physical tools and skills to excel at either QB or CB, fortunately the QB position is set for years to come so he won't be needed there. He will move to CB full time, redshirting his first year on campus. Nice to know with his skills he could step in at QB if the Badgers top recruit doesn't commit.

Stewart is a nice addition for the Badgers Defense, though he won't come in as a DE. He will be converted to a pass rushing OLB. Stewart will need to work on his pass rushing moves during his redshirt season.

Wisconsin lands it's #2 prized recruit this week after a huge visit week for the Badgers. Still in

Wilson is another huge grab for the Badgers, as Coaches have a good problem on their hands. Travis can do it all, play QB, WR or CB. Each position coach is chomping at the bit to get him, but unsure where he will go. Depending on how the rest of the Badgers' recruiting goes, Wilson could be put at either of the 3 positions. Either way he will likely redshirt his 1st season on campus to even further develop his skills.

Toledo, Bowling Green and Ohio State were also interested

Harrison was a much needed commit for the Badgers as the current kicker has a very weak leg...Only 65 kick power. So Harrison will start immediately once he is on campus. We would have liked his leg strength to be a little stronger, but his accuracy is just as solid.

Washington comes in as a bit of a cross between a DE or a edge rusher OLB. He lacks the speed Coaches' would like to see as an OLB in the Defensive scheme but could improve in that area. On the flip side he lacks the bulk for the DE position as well. He will redshirt his first year on campus as his position options are evaluated. With a year to grow his destined position should be available by then.

With 2 Senior starters due to graduate next week, Mitchell was a necessary signing. Though he isn't completely ready to take on a starting role he may be forced to next season. Coaches will decide in spring camp.

    Navy offered as well
    WR
    #547
    ##98WR
WR isn't a position of need, but Coaches were impressed with Bullock's size and receiving abilities. He will be given time to grow his first few years, so expect a redshirt. By his 2nd and 3rd year he could be a quality starter and playmaker.

Coaches were impressed with the little tape that they saw on Marcus, as well as his size and athleticism. He will need to work on his rushing technique, instead of simply relying on his ability to get past blockers. The Badgers are young at the OLB position so he will have time to further develop. Marcus will redshirt his first year on campus

Jeremy was the Badgers most sought after recruit, which says something with the likes of Wilson and Jones in this class. He already has all the tools to start his 1st day on campus but has time to improve even more given Wisconsin's current QB situation. He will redshirt, then further develop his 2nd year on campus to be ready to take over the team his Sophomore season.

Patterson was a stud coming out of high school, he just wasn't able to make the grades. After a couple of years in JUCO, he's ready to show what he can do. With good strength and excellent abilities to get off of a block, then track down the ball carrier, he'll be back to being a stud in no-time.

That said, ASU coaches would like to redshirt him in order to get an extra year of eligibility out of him.

    Patterson received no other offers.

Stewart is a project WR for the Red Wolves. Despite scouts rating his hands as poor, Stewart still managed to be all-conference in high school. ASU Coaches believe they can work with Stewart and get his hands up to a level that he can be an every-down player eventually.

For now, with a large number of receivers returning next year, Stewart will redshirt to work on his hands for a year.

Stewart had some interest from Kansas but they backed off once they saw Arkansas State enter the picture.

With three upper-classmen at CB, ASU coaches were looking for depth at the position. After signing one definite future starter in Tyler Young, they set their sights on Harris. With good speed and agility combined with solid coverage skills, he'll be a playmaker in the future.

For now, Harris will redshirt and wait for his opportunity to start in the future.

Harris received offers from UCLA, Ole Miss, & Kansas.

The second big recruiting weekend of the season for the Jayhawks coincided with the huge upset over then-#10 Ohio State. A few of the players that were in-town this weekend have verbally committed to the Jayhawks. Let's see what they bring to the table.

    CB
    #509 #26CB
3-star cornerback Taylor Wheatley was in Lawrence for the victory over Ohio State, and pleasantly shocked Kansas coaches by committing immediately after traveling home to Texas. Wheatley had received a lot of late interest from Notre Dame, who he was scheduled to visit in Week 14, and KU coaches believed that if Wheatley had made the visit to South Bend that KU had no chance to overcome the Irish. Stopping Wheatley from visiting South Bend was the plan, but KU coaches did not expect Wheatley to follow that plan. The young man brings impressive straight line speed, and above average coverage skills to Lawrence. Where he's lacking is in size, strength, and change of direction. Due to his lack of strength, Wheatley is easily manhandled by run blockers. KU coaches hope that a college strength program will improve the young man enough that he can compete at the next level.

KU coaches expect Wheatley to redshirt next season, then compete for the dimeback slot as a redshirt freshman. Wheatley chose KU over Notre Dame. Arkansas State showed interest in Wheatley at one time, but took pity on the Jayhawks.
    QB
    HB

    #367 #54ATH
Orlando Woods is a two-way playing, three-star prospect that plays both quarterback and cornerback for his high school. With decent speed, a good first step, and some ability to make tacklers miss, Woods was tabbed early in the season by KU's coaches as good addition to the halfback position. With the changes to the KU offense this season, and a renewed focus on the quarterback running game, Woods has started to be thought of as a quarterback instead. Right now, sources inside Allen Fieldhouse indicate that Woods is expected to start his time at KU at quarterback, unless another late signing to this year's class is a better option at QB. In the unlikely event that happens, Woods would slide over to his originally planned HB position.

No matter which position he ends up, Woods is going to be behind several upperclassmen. He will redshirt next season. Woods chose KU over Houston, Cincinnati, Texas and Bowling Green.
    DT
    #633 #49DT
Scott Davis is the final player that signed this week with KU. Davis is another body signed to shore up the defensive line rotation. Though he is lacking significantly in top-line speed or lateral movement (Rich Eisen might be able to beat him in the 40-yd dash or 30-yd shuttle), Davis is a weight-room warrior, competing as a bodybuilder in the offseason. Thanks to those skills, Davis is very difficult to block, possessing equally good pass rush and block shedding moves.

Davis will redshirt next season as he is not immediately needed. Davis chose KU over Florida State and Ole Miss.

Eric could start Day 1 he stepped on campus if need be and coaches would feel confident in his ability. He has the size and physical tools to be successful, as Coaches rave about his coverage skills already. He will be given more time to further develop his technique and strength necessary to play press coverage as a redshirt his first year.
