    Season Preview

2016 Ohio Poly Phantom Fire Pre-Season Preview

The Ohio Poly Phantomphyre were a 2-pt try away fron their 3rd title game in four years. But this season, they will field the an inexperienced offense with a defense supported by an almost all Freshman secondary. Lets take a look at the reloading Phantom Fire.

    Quarterback:
    Mike Flemming (RS-Sr) 92
    Clarence Johnson (RS-So) 81

    Backs:
    Derek Anderson (RS-Sr) 99
    Thomas Frye (RS-Jr) 92
    Troy Bracken, FB (RS-Fr) 82

Derek Anderson has been waiting his turn and looks to get it this year. After sitting behind Jim Hale and then Philip Jenkins, this humble star who could have been a 4-year starter will bring his 99 OVR rating to the starting lineup for the first time. He will try to improve on his 17 TD, 2000+ yard all-purpose season of a year ago. He'll be joined in the backfield by Thomas Frye, the Jr and Troy Bracken, the Freshman FB.

    Receivers:
    Joe Byars (RS-Sr) 95
    Frank Maynard (RS-Fr) 80
    Ted Duckett (Jr) 79
    Matt McCray, TE (RS-Jr) 92

Joe Byars is all that's left of arguably the best recieving corp in NCAA last season. Both Brett Smaith and Marcus Moore went in the first two rounds, and Byars will be left to be the primary target this season. Frank Maynard, fresh off of a redshirt, will have to step in as the #2 while Ted Duckett, JUCO All-American, will take on the role of #3 receiver. Matt McCray will take over the TE, H-0Back, and FB roles.

    Offensive Line:
    Tackles--
    xxxxxx (Jr) 89
    xxxxx(So) 85

    Guards--
    xxxx (Jr) 90
    xxxxx (Jr) 85

    Center--
    xxxxx (Jr) 94

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

    Defensive Line:
    Ends--
    Adam Martinez (So) 85
    Ray Hall (So) 88

    Tackles--
    David Kent (Sr) 95
    Anderson Lee (Jr) 90

The departure of Jake Bennett and Adrian Chase were hard to take, but the young depth and talent at Coach Gs disposal make the transition easier. Martinez in a Javon Kearse-esque athletic freak. He'll spend all season in the oppositions backfield. Hall is a traditional unstopping 3-4 end, and will play inside some. Kent and Lee are space eaters and will dominate inside. They could end up being virtually unblockable.

    Linebackers:
    Inside--
    Mike McGee (Sr) 94

    Outside--
    Robert Massey (Sr) 94
    Rodney ONeil (Sr) 83

The Phyre have a wealth of young linebackers, again, waiting in the wings. But this season, it's about the Seniors. Massey and McGee are back to lead a defense that was 4th in NCAA against the run, and #1 against runs from scrimmage (subtracting sack losses). They will add Rodney O'Neil to the mix, a converted Safety who has played everywhere in Poly's back 7. He'll bring 4.37 speed to the "Specter" position where he'll blitz, spy, and roam free trying to create turnovers.

    Secondary:
    Corners--
    Curtis Gilbert (Sr) 93
    Justin Liningston (Jr) 94
    Eric Holman (Jr) 86

    Safeties--
    Vernon Stevenson (Jr) 91
    Kevin Webster (So) 91

Gilbert and Livingston are back together, and will comprise the most formidable CB tandem in NCAA. Both are fast, long, and fully-shutdown. Gilbert had 8 picks last season while Livingston redshirted. Stevenson was the boundary corner last season and will move to FS where his elite zone coverage skill (99), solid tackling (80) and nose for the ball (4 fumble recoveries, 2 picks and 2 TDs last season) will be major assets. Webster, once considered for an OLB spot, will be back at SS where his fierce hitting earned him respect throughout the conference. NFL scouts are giving him favorable comparisons to Laron Landry in his LSU days.

    SEASON 6: Pre Season

    Previews:

Steven Goolsby will take over for Mike Flemming as triggerman for the Phantom Spread, with Thomas Frye as his top run threat. Fred Maynard will step in as the go-to receiver in an offense in which every single starter is in a new role. The offense has 8 new starters, and the 3 returners will be expected to take on much greater roles. Frye, a pre-season 1st round projection, is the lone Senior on this young offense.

The defense will have 8 new starters. Last season's very young secondary will now have the most starts of any unit. Coach Gameface will return to the 4.2.5 Spectre defense after utilizing his four stellar senior linebackers a year ago. This unit has only 3 Seniors, Curtis Berry, SS, being the only returning starting Senior starter.

    Season 6 Synopsis:

After back to back MNCs, the team expected to start a new era at QB with RS Jr Will Hill. However, a surprise decision to go pro led to ascending soph Mark White taking the reins of the offense one season earlier then expected. White's inexperience showed early as he threw 4 ints before being knocked out of the game at CDU. Backup QB Mark Gunn, a converted WR, was unable to rally the team as they lost 31-16. With no respite, the Demons faced off against WWW the next week. After racing to an early lead, WWW was able to hold on for the win 34-28 as the defense failed to stop a couple of late third down conversions. White had another poor game, throwing 3 ints. After a few easier games, Austin had another shot at redemption against B12 rival SLU. In a game where every big play and bounce seemed to go SLU's way, Austin suffered their 3rd loss of the season 24-21, with a crucial 4th and long completion cementing the loss.

The team was able to rally with strong wins against TSU and Atl, with White showing some promise in both games and tallying 307 yards and 3 TDs through the air and another TD on the ground. More importantly, he failed to turnover the ball for the first time in the season. With the win, Austin looks forward to a hard offseason and hopefully improved season next year. They will be forced to replace all three starters at LB as well starting FS Aaron Stephens. Four additional starters depart but Austin has backups that should allow little dropoff. Ultimately, however, next year's team will be dependent on the arm and leg of Mark White, expected to be the undisputed starter.

    Depth Charts
    Offense
Steven Goolsby leads a group of 10 returning starters who fell short last years after an improbable undefeated regular season. He will have his full compliment of weapons including TE Karl Temple(91), H-Back Troy Bracken(89), Biletnokoff winner Fred Maynard and counterpart Kurt Allen(87/88). The lone replacment will be JR-HB Ray Davis(92), who will have help from Antonio Garrett (95 SPD) and Senior Anthony Fitch (98 SPD). The line is seasoned, and boasts 4 players rated in the 90's OVR. Everyone on the offense has completed their undergraduate degree, or will complete one before bowl season.

    Defense
Thorpe award winner Curtis Berry was taken in the 4th round by the New England Patriots, but former All-American Chad "Diez" Johnson(89), a Jr, returns from his injury redshirt to take over Berry's vacated spot. He'll be joined by Senior Doug Smith(91) and RS-Junior Robert Ashley (89) as the safeties in the 4-2-5. RS-Soph Brandon Sanders(87) returns from his Freshman All-American year and will join Senior Thorpe runner up Jeff Gross(90) to round out the secondary. The front six will include linebackers David George and Brent Clark. George(90) is a RS-Senior and a 2nd Team All-American, but Clark(92), also a RS-Sr, is arguably more talented. The front four will return the RS-Juniors Cory Bryan(91) and Paris O'Donnell(93), but will add new starters at the ends in RS-Jr Tony Allen(87) and RS-Soph Robert Smith(85).

    Season 7 Synopsis:

Starting off with an early season battle at FAMU, Austin's title hopes were derailed by a FAMU offense that Austin could not stop. Despite a great game by Mark White, Austin lost 42-38. The second game against CDU pitted Austin against the defending B10 champs and a team that clobbered them the last year. HFA carried Austin to a relatively tension free win. Austin continued to win, avenging a loss to the defending national and conference champs SLU 55-11 and also beating TSU. However, the loss early kept them out of the MNC and they could only watch helplessly. The hope is that the confidence from the 12 game winning streak will lead to an improved performance next year.
