Preseason Overview
Quote
Quarterback--
The QB situation has finally settled down at SA. Brad Blanco, who threw for just under 3000 yards and 20+ TD's last season, was able to distinguish himself last season, despite being benched two times. Richard Daniels being lost for the season may have saved him as Daniels was 18/20 with 3 TD passes in his limited time as a true Freshman before a broken collarbone sidelined him for the year. But this off-season, Blanco emerged as a leader in the film room, weight room, and on the track and is clearly the top guy. Look for Kyle Hart to again give a change of pace with his running, while Daniels is the backup. 4-star recruit Deon Brown and prize recruit John Colbert from two seasons ago will both red shirt.
Running back--
At a school where Kevin Parrish and Ben Washington were All-Americans just seasons ago, Calvin Ross is clearly among the elite backs in the nation. After rushing for 1800+ yards and 29 TD's, he has favorably been compared to former Florida Gator Emmit Smith. The 2015 Doak Walker winner will be joined by freshly red-shirted Matt Hardy and Senior Dennis Stallings, both of whom have home-run hitter speed. 246 lb JR Brandon Ward and his 10 TD's a season ago will red-shirt.
Receivers--
Maurice Fox was the lone departing SA receiver from last years corp, and though his presence will be missed, his shoes are going to be easily filled. Returning are Quinten Pitts, the 6'5" Impact Receiver, and 1,000 play-maker Derick Rivera. They expected to be joined by Cory Bonds and Larry Crowder, but both will Red-Shirt after leaving the team for a season (Crowder to pursue pro baseball, Bonds due to academic issues). RS-Soph Paul Moore will handle the 3rd receiver duties, with Freshman Josh White likely to see lots of action this season. Coaches have promised that TE Keith Reese will be a much bigger part of the offense this year as well.
Offensive Line--
For the third straight year, SA will start a Freshman on the o-line. Brian Sampson, the 4* out of CA, will start at the all important LT spot. 2-year starters Luke McDonald and Matt Smith will be at the Guard spots. 0RS-Soph Lance Mason will play Center while true Soph Josh Seymour plays the RT. Four of the 5 starters hve played every snap since the first of their Freshman year.
Defensive Line--
Freshman All-American Adrian Hudson will return to the LE spot. With Senior Joe Peterson dropping down to the DT, former 5* Cedric Prince moved from the MLB to the end opposite Hudson where his size, speed, and footwork will make him a force. In the middle, true Soph Joey Pina will start again next to Peterson while star recruit Josh Johnson takes his red shirt.
Linebackers--
Leader of the defense Charlie Carter will be flanked by youth and speed. Outside backers Zach Wiley and Brendan Murphy will bring athleticism, even if not experience. Look for both of them to rack up sacks in Coach Gamefaces 4-3'Shogun' scheme.
Corners--
Nick McDowell and Johnny Whitworth are both a year older, and have gotten some help. Soph John Wynn moves over from the FS to be the third corner, moving one-time starter Sr Courtney Clark to the 4th corner.
Safeties--
The loss of ball-hawking Joel Roberts is a tough void to fill. But, the emergence of 3* FS Nathan Burke, the Freshman out of Canada, has been such a pleasant surprise in spring ball that coaches were willing to let John Wynn move to corner to shore up that position while Burke starts grooming to take over the FS position. Dan Ramsey, the RS Jr, will start this season while Burke red shirts, then will move to SS next year when hard-hitting Joey Whittaker graduates to make room for Burke. Coaches are already saying Burke could be the best at that position since current pros Chad Key and Pierre Hand.

Hunter Hills, CO (AP)--
The Rochester Raiders arrived from Louisiana in three fully outfitted private jets. Spent the night at the Ritz-Carlton of Denver, and were shuttled to the game in a fleet of Italian sports cars. Each player had a personal assistant with them (and for the last time, THEY WEREN'T AGENTS!!) armed with Blackberry's, center-fold models, and suitcases full of hundred-dollar bills. But, as was Coach Gameface's plan, they spent Friday night enjoying the Denver night-life and were a little sluggish at kickoff. The result, a 28-14 SA upset, their third straight year knocking off the #2 ranked team in the nation.
The game started with defense. SA picked off Roc on their opening drive, Roc in turned forced a punt. When SA was finally able to score--an 8 yard run by Matt Hardy the key play--Roc answered quickly with a 80 yard bomb to Sr Eric Jackson. Jackson had 2 catches for 120 yards. The first quarter ended 7-7.
The second quarter saw SA controlling the tempo. Clint Ross was in his typical All-American form. After returning from an injury in the second quarter, he took a hand off to the right side and raced untouched 51 yards to put SA up 14-7. "Brad (Blanco) and I made a sight adjust at the line," said Ross at the press conference. He ended with 149 yards rushing on 21 carries. "...nobody knew but us--at the snap, the Roc defenders read their keys and flowed left while Brad and I went right. Then it was a sprint, and they aren't catching me from behind."
In the second half, the SA offense played keep-away. SA gave Roc only two possessions and no points, while riding Ross to the finish line. A key series was SA stopping Roc inside the ten, then Ross carrying on 10 of 12 plays to put SA up two scores. Soph John Wynn picked off a pass at the ned to clinch the victory.
"This is a great win for these Seniors," said Coach Gameface from the podium, "they were 0-3 against Rochester in the four year home-and-home series, and wanted this one badly. Coach DaKlown has a young and great team that is only going to get better and better. We are lucky to have defended home field. Next up, we have to get ready for a Reno team that stole something from us. This is a payback game. Our Seniors are going to have to step up and keep our guys focused because we've had this date circled for 51 weeks."
The SA-Reno game will be broadcast live next week at 7PM on the Ocho.

Denver, Colorado (AP)--
The Stryder Academy defended homefield Saturday with a 40-18 victory over Pac-10 rival Oklahoma City at The Guild. SA, now 9-1, won the game without the services of Heisman hopeful Matt Hardy with aggressive and opportunistic pass defense, big plays from Derrick Rivera, and steady running by the "The 500lb Backfield" committee + Justin Richardson. The win puts SA i n the drivers seat for the Pac-10 title for the 3rd straight season, and a 4th consecutive BCS Bowl Game.
SA started the game the way it would finish--with defense. All-World DE Cedric Prince crashed through on OkC's first posession giving SA the ball at OkC's 12. After holding SA to 3, OkC responded with a 3 of their own evening things. On the ensuing drive, OkC, who had been holding SA's running game in check, gave up the first big play of the game--a 69 yard scamper by Brandon Jenkins--10-3 SA. On the next play from scrimmage, Prince struck again causing an erant pass that was picked off and taken to the house from 17 out by Dan Ramsey--17-3 SA.
OkC attacked, and was able to move into the red-zone, but settled for a 2nd field goal. On the next drive, SA struck through the air--Larry Crowder catching the pass from 31 yards out on the deep post putting SA up 24-3. Trying to get points before half, Cutler Stevenson (who threw 4 int's on the day) airmailed a pass that was picked off, setting SA up for the field goal and a 27-6 half-time lead.
In the second half, Sr QB Brad Blanco of SA fired a laser to Rivera who broke outside and used his 4.3 flat speed to outrun the OkC defenders from 70 yards away and put SA up 34-6. Stevenson, the Pac-10's most efficient passer coming into the day, settled in and threw for over 300 yards and ended the day with two Sunday afternoon caliber TD passes, but the SA pass rush early on was the insurmountable difference.
"That is rivalry football," said Coach Gameface from the post game podium, "Our Seniors did not want to lose to those guys on our field. They went out and played as well as we've played all year on D, and our backs stepped up and gave us 24 carries for 186 yards and 2 TD's without Matt--included in that a couple of explosive plays that we usually depend on him for. Brandon may run a 4.6 on the track, but on the field he looked pretty fast running that one in from 69 yards out. Total team effort--I'm proud of these guys."
SA has a week off before playing against North Carolina. They will need a Virginia State loss to SHSU to have any chance of seeing the MNC title game.
