    Meet Your 2015 Michigan Wolverines

I know everyone is excited for the upcoming season for Michigan. After ending the season on a moderately high note with both offense & defense clicking in their final two games, expectations are high for this season. Let's find out why (all ratings pre-offseason training).

    Quarterback
Led by Junior QB Kevin Jones, the Wolverine offense saw sparks of greatness during the 2014 campaign. Now older and wiser, Jones looks to be a great leader for his team. Expect more responsibility to be on his shoulders to be the catalyst for this offense with even more of the offense going through him. Backing him up will be Redshirt Sophomore Bryce Weaver and Redshirt Freshman Michael Coleman. Weaver might sneak onto the field in some packages but expect very few snaps with the first team offense... this is Jones' team.

    Halfback
Last year's season started slow in the running game while the offense attempted to find it's rhythm, that is until HB Jake Marks burst onto the scene. Marks didn't get his first start until Week 7, but he earned the job by rushing 22 carries for 153 yards in that game. From there out, he retained the leading role rushing for just under 1000 yards for the remainder of the season. Backing him up is a complimentary back in Tom Davis. Davis is oft compared to classic runningbacks like Christian Okoye or Tom Rathman with his bruising running game. Both Davis and Marks will be Redshirt Sophomores this upcoming season so the future looks bright. To round out the mix, Redshirt Senior Thomas Rawls is another bruising back to give Davis a breather and Redshirt Senior Zach Smith is a pure speed back that can find the edge and run. Two players expected to redshirt this upcoming season are Sophomore Andrew Childs and incoming Freshman Reggie Stallings, both will be ready to fill the holes left by Rawls and Smith next season.

    Fullback
While Michigan rarely lines up in a tradition I-Form set, the fullback is still a very important role in the Wolverine's offense as a critical blocker. Sophomore Kellen Smith filled that role quite well last year as a lead blocker. His toughness and tenacity helps clear holes for Marks and company to find room to run. Competing with Smith for the starting job will be Redshirt Freshman Andrew Johnson (no relation). Both are quite adept at opening holes in the blocking game, however Johnson adds an ability to catch passes out of the backfield that Smith doesn't quite have. Moving over to the Fullback position will be Sophomore Colby Melton. Melton was determined to be undersized in the passing game and while his blocking abilities don't quite matchup to Smith or Johnson, his running abilities add an extra dimension.

    Wide Receiver
Receiver has been a mixed bag for the Wolverines as far as what they contribute. While mostly they are just simply relief from the running game, later in the season they were found to be catching passes more and more often. The leading returner at WR is Redshirt Senior Jonathan Keizer, a tall lanky possession receiver on the outside. Opposite him will be Redshirt Junior Justin Austin, another possession receiver with the ability to make great catches and break a tackle or two along the way. Rounding out the starters is slot WR Redshirt Senior Justice Hayes, a former HB that has the speed and agility to make him a dangerous threat once he has the ball in his hands. Behind them will be Sophomore Tim Pittman (known for his game winning catch in the Cotton Bowl), and moving from CB will be Redshirt Sophomore Brandon Thompson who like Hayes, adds a compliment of speed and athleticism. A footnote is also required of Redshirt Junior Bo Thomas as his height and speed make him hard to overlook but his catching abilities aren't quite what they should be. If he can learn to catch the ball, he'll find a role on the roster.

    Tight End
The Tight End for the Wolverines offers two distinct roles as the primary TE should be a blocker while the second TE should be a receiver. The Wolverines have had the perfect secondary TE on their roster from the start, Senior Devin Funchess. Funchess has excellent hands and good speed with just the right amount of blocking abilities. Complimenting him at the blocking TE will be Redshirt Sophomore Joe Maxwell who can catch some but is best known for clearing a path. Two incoming Freshman will compete for the third position on the depth chart with the other one redshirting; Eric Capps is more of a blocking TE but has soft hands for a person with his skillset while former ATH Frank Wiggins found his home as a receiving TE. Expect Wiggins to likely redshirt so that he can progress somewhat on his blocking abilities.

    Offensive Tackle
The Offensive Line only lost one starter and that was Left Tackle Kristian Mateus. Replacing him is expected to be Redshirt Sophomore Jeff Petty, however look for true Sophomore Jamil Lucas to get a serious look at that position. Returning at Right Tackle will be Redshirt Junior Blake Bars with his excellent pass blocking skills and his ability to muscle his way with defenders. Backing up Bars will be true Freshman Mike James, though he may get a serious look at Left Tackle due to his already developed pass blocking abilities.

    Guard
Michigan is solid with interior blocking and having two returning Senior Guards is a big boost to that. At Left Guard, Redshirt Senior Graham Glasgow is a prototypical road grater, clearing a lane for the Wolverine Runningbacks with great strength and run blocking technique. Opposite him will be fellow Redshirt Senior Chris Bryant whom even surpasses Glasgow's strength and matches his run blocking technique. Both of these two will be a big key to the Wolverine's running game. Providing relief and preparing for the future will be Redshirt Junior Kyle Kalis, Redshirt Freshman John Hunt, and Redshirt Sophomore Antonio Garrison.

    Center
Center also returns a stud blocker in the middle of the line with Junior Cornelius McCarthy starting for his 3rd straight year on the line. McCarthy is a balanced blocker in terms of abilities but is very capable at both pass and run blocking. While his height is quite shorter than most OL around the country, he uses his low center of gravity to his advantage. Providing a backup role will be true Freshman Trey Hall who comes in with very raw abilities and ready to take over for McCarthy after he graduates.

    Defensive End
At the Defensive End positions, both starters return for this upcoming season with just the right mix of pressure from younger talent to drive them to compete. At the Left End position, Redshirt Senior Frank Clark returns to provide a quality outside rush-end to get after the QB with decent speed and finesse moves. At the Right End, typically a more interior role in the 3-3-5, Redshirt Junior Tom Strobel provides an anchor with good strength and nice power moves to get past the Guard along with an ability to chase down the ball carrier. As backups, Sophomore Paul Pollard combines speed and strength into one package while Redshirt Junior Mario Ojemudia is a balanced pass rusher. Add in true Freshman Frank Levine with his ability to get off blocks and the DEs looks solid who also could compete for a starting job.

    Defensive Tackle
Defensive Tackle is one of a few positions on the defense that lost a significant starter in outgoing DT Richard Ash. Replacing him will be a competition between all three players. The leading candidate will be Redshirt Junior Ondre Pipkins with his significant advantage in the strength department. Challenging him will be Sophomore Kris McBride (more of a rusher rather than a block eater) and true Freshman Chris Martindale who finds middle ground between rushing and block eating. However, expect situations where all three are on the field at the same time in short yardage situations.

    Left Outside Linebacker
The LOLB is a critical position for the Wolverine's 3-3-5 Defense. Acting as a hybrid between coverage and tackling, this role is crucial to disguising coverages while still having a capable player to cover a WR. Junior Seth Andrews has filled this role since his Freshman season, however true Freshman Todd McCoy steps onto the field to show Andrews how it's truly done. McCoy offers up not only excellent coverage ability but also adds exceptional ability to get off blocks and make the tackle. Andrews will still see plenty of playing time as there will be situations where both are on the field together, but McCoy will see the bulk of the base packages. Redshirt Freshman Justin Marshall will also be a compliment to the two, though he lacks any real ability to rush the passer.

    Middle Linebacker
MLB suffers the biggest loss from last season as Desmond Morgan was the leading tackler for the Wolverines. Replacing him will be seasoned backup, Junior Karl Brown. Brown has essentially been preparing for this since he first set foot on campus and is primed to take over the role. With excellent tackling abilities as well as ability to get off of blocks, he is a force in the middle. Backing him up with be Redshirt Freshman Justin Lane who prepares to also be an eventual successor for Brown. Lane's abilities are similar to Brown's, however his top-end acceleration gets him through holes just as quick as they open.

    Right Outside Linebacker
While the LOLB is more of a hybrid SS/LB, the ROLB is more of a hybrid DE/LB requiring more ability to rush the passer and get off of blocks. Like the MLB, the ROLB lost it's starter in Jake Ryan, however this season's class sees several capable players to fill his role. The two leading the race for the starting role will be Redshirt Sophomore Thomas Cox and Redshirt Junior William Carroll. Both have good strength and finesse/power moves, Cox offers more ability to recognize a play and get after the ball, as well as good coverage skills likely propelling him into the starting position. Backing them up will be a pair of Redshirt Juniors in Joe Bolden and Royce Jenkins Stone, both slide over from being in a different LB position last year and both offer good coverage abilities and the ability to rush the passer, but neither impresses much in terms of wrapping up a tackle.

    Cornerback
The final major departure from the 2014 defense was CB Blake Countess who had started since his true Sophomore year in 2012. Replacing him will be Sophomore Junior Carter who started last year as a true Freshman and performed quite well. Opposite Carter will be Redshirt Sophomore Thomas Torres who provided a significant backup role last season. The third CB role will fall to true Freshman Ryan Banks who is also expected to see significant time as a Wildcat role. Filling in behind them will be a myriad of players depending on the situation. Redshirt Junior Terry Richardson slides back over to the CB position after spending a couple of years as a FS. Behind him will be a former JUCO, Redshirt Junior Lamont Johnson. The final piece of the puzzle will be true Freshman Antwain Vinson, though Vinson is expected to redshirt.

    Free Safety
While departing Senior Marvin Robinson was the starter last season, the major reason behind that was due to the injury to FS/Wildcat Bryan Dean. Dean suffered an injury early in the season that sat him out all the way until Week 15. With Dean returning and a new Wildcat ready to take over, he'll be primed to slide into the FS position. Backing him up will be a riff-raff of players that can contribute but none are ready to play every down.

    Strong Safety
Strong Safeties are the key to the attacking 3-3-5 Defense and it's critical to have players that can stay on the field in just about every situation. As a result, there are two types of SS in the Wolverine's defense, the Predator and the Coverage Safety. As a predator, they have skills that combine a Safety with Coverage and a Linebacker with tackling skills. For the Wolverines, Redshirt Freshman Orlando McAfee will step into that role. While his coverage skills are lacking, his tackling skills and his ability to rush the passer make him an immediate threat. Added his 6'7 height and he'll be a force in getting after the QB. Backing him up will be Freshman Michael Nugent, like McAfee, what he lacks in coverage, he makes up more than enough in tackling. Opposite him will be a pair of Coverage Safeties that are top notch. Redshirt Senior Raymon Taylor returns to the field after taking a sabbatical during the 2014 season. His speed and coverage abilities are impressive and he adds in the ability to wrap up and make the tackle. Complimenting him will be Redshirt Sophomore Dominique Wilson who also has exceptional coverage skills and tackling ability to go along with very high-end speed. There will be packages that see both Taylor and Wilson on the field together, particularly in 3rd & long situations.

I think most of it has to do with the holiday's and all that come along with them. I know I will have more time for the next month after finals on Friday.

I read this all and like OB mentioned I too am considering putting together something as well.

I enjoy reading these and would really like if we could all eventually work towards writing these kind of things up. I think it just adds to the OD a bunch. Add to that we have a great group of guys here in Powerhouse it would really spice up the matchups and depth of the OD.

Maybe. We just always seem to hit a lull, but that's how it goes once the initial excitement over the game starts to decrease. Look at how few Recruiting posts there were this season ... we had a couple hundred in the first season. People have gotten busier though, so maybe that's a factor too. Who knows.

My recruits were not as good, so that is why I didn't post them.

I didn't do a lot of recruiting posts because I wanted all my guys 100% scouted before posting them up, didn't start getting that until late in the season and by that time I figured it would be best to just do one big one.
