Fairly certain he does it to learn effects and also to build a resume... most if not all of his videos are similarly related to war effects, etc. Here's my favorite:

Oh, I'm sure he is. It was less the editing and more the amount of time needed to record all of that footage that I was thinking about.

The actual effects and editing is very impressive. The rest of it seems like a bit of a waste of time.
