    2012-2013 College Basketball Discussion Thread

If the alternate jerseys Maryland will be wearing against Kentucky on Nov. 9 appear to be merely the latest abominable example of college basketball's newfound infatuation with gray, then take a closer look.

Those aren't just basic ugly gray jerseys. They're ugly gray jerseys with a textured pattern meant to resemble wool.

Since the season-opening Kentucky matchup will be held at the brand-new Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Under Armour chose the unusual look to honor the Brooklyn Dodgers. The faux-wool jersey is supposed to be reminiscent of 1950s-style baseball uniforms, while the Maryland script is both something the Terps have worn previously and another homage to baseball.

"The expectation is for teams to come out in unique uniforms for big games," Adam Clement, Under Armour's lead designer for uniforms, said in a statement. "We worked with the school to do something that showed the appreciation for sports in Brooklyn."

The gray jerseys are just one of a myriad of new looks Maryland will be unveiling next season. Expect the Terps to also don a "Pride" basketball jersey modeled after the state flag and reminiscent of the ones the football program wore during the 2011 season.

Whereas the preliminary design of the Pride jerseys appears to be bold yet tasteful, these Brooklyn jerseys don't hold the same appeal.

First, like most gray jerseys, they're not exactly aesthetically pleasing. And secondly, why should Maryland wear a jersey that honors the Brooklyn Dodgers? If the Terps ever play in Montreal, will they bring back the Expos logo?

Thankfully, the jerseys are merely a one-time-only experiment. As one commenter on the Maryland-themed site, Testudo Times, said, "They are ugly as sin and the University of Maryland basketball is paying homage to a Brooklyn baseball team. I don't get it."

Its an Under Armour response to what Nike did last year to non-Nike schools with the "Platinum" line for etc... that wore "platinum" jerseys against non-Nike schools for 1 game.

I see nothing wrong with that jersey. It looks perfectly fine to me.

I don't get the Brooklyn Dodgers connection though.

Why do they have to do the overnight marathon games on a freakin' weekday? Why not do it on a weekend starting on Friday and playing until whenever instead of on a Tuesday?

Just seems silly to me. There can't be that many people watching those games that late at night.

College bball has ALWAYS screwed up its beginning of the season IMHO.

IMHO they could really get some attention garnered with BIG "pre-season" tournys to start the season (especially if several of the title contenders were in the same tourny).

Unfortunately, most of the public pays ZERO attention until March.

    @14 "@" 5:30pm EST(only the Airforce Base ship thing)

    @ #11 7:00pm EST

LOTS of GREAT games on already. Thank god for college basketball and the NBA to get me the hell out of my terrible (NFL and NCAA) football woes.

I think they get screwed by when the season starts. You have NBA, NFL, and NCAA to contend with and the NFL and NCAA continue to expand when games are going to be played (NFL expanding to Thursday nights and the NCAA playing on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday nights now as well as already having a presence on Thursday nights).

So, NCAA Basketball gets to play second fiddle to most of the other sports and I think it ends up having the same issue as the NBA has with fan interest in the beginning: When you have so many games played, the excitement of a team losing just becomes a non-issue after a while. Sadly, part of that is the fact that March Madness is so huge (allowing so many teams in) which, fortunately for NCAA Basketball, is also what makes March Madness so amazing and it's something that the NFL has been able to grasp ahold of as well (seeing teams like the Giants go from a piddly 9-7 or 10-6 season to winning it all because they got hot at the right time).

The NCAA, last year, benefited GREATLY by the NBA not starting their season until Christmas. Sadly, the NBA stupidly went back to their normal 82 game season instead of smartly keeping the Christmas start that garnered the most watched season EVER last year.

The only thing that could make tonight's UCONN / Michigan State game at Ramstein Air Base better is if Rammstein was playing at halftime.

Yeah, I won't even get to watch a single fucking game this year. We have remotes at work 7-9am, 11am-1pm, and 4-7pm on Tuesday (so I'm going to be tired as FUCK by the time I get home around 7:30pm that night), then I have to turn around and be into work by 5:45am Wednesday morning for a 6-9am remote.

Last year I got to catch some of the middle of the night games because I was on a reversed sleep cycle, awake from late evening, all night and until mid-morning, then sleeping during the day. This year, I'll be asleep by probably 10pm Monday night and will sure as hell be asleep within an hour of getting home Tuesday night.

Michigan State and UCONN put on a great show for the troops in Germany. I like Kevin Ollie. Hope he becomes a great head coach.
