Game Summary
Well here’s the game that was circled on Michigan’s cal… yeah let’s not lie and say Michigan has been looking forward to this match up. We just wanted to see if we could hang with the big boys and get a little money in our pockets. What actually ended up happening, well, we definitely weren’t expecting it.
First quarter. Michigan gets the ball first so we’re thinking let’s get a three and out. Well that didn’t happen. On the second play from scrimmage, Toussaint takes it to the house on a 69-yard run. Ok. It’s our turn. On our first play from scrimmage the ball bounces out the receiver’s hand and into the defense’s hands. Not a good start. Michigan would score with the great field position. Tell of what kind of day it was going to be. Michigan would close out the scoring in the first quarter with another touchdown. 21-0. Now we’re thinking, “let’s just survive”
Second quarter starts and Michigan hasn’t stepped off the gas yet. Dennard would run it in himself with a 15-yard TD run. He ended the game with 100 yards rushing. And Toussaint had over 200 yards. More interceptions are thrown. At this point it’s 28-0. Can we at least get a field goal? Well we do at the end of the quarter so we finally got points on the board. Halftime. 28-3.
Now, let me begin by saying that this was a record setting day for Gatewood. Onto the third quarter. We take the first drive of the half and we score a touchdown. Just trying to survive the game. We’re on national TV, we got to save some kind of face. We stop Michigan. We seemed to do that a lot this quarter. We score again, a 3 yard pass from Gatewood to Felder. Freshman connection. At this point it’s 28-17. Survival mode has now turned into upset mode. We had momentum. We get more stops from the defense, and we score again to end the third quarter. 24-28. We are in this game.
4
th quarter. Surely Michigan has woken up out of their half time slumber right? Well they sort of did. Goliath was doing everything to hold on to their small lead aside from scoring points. And David was doing everything to keep this game close. The ending minutes of the 4
th is what decided the game. Michigan marches down and score what was sure to be the dagger touchdown with only a little over 2 minutes left in the game. Well, the next drive due to a mistimed dive, we score on a big play that took very little off the clock. 35-31. Of course we go for the onside kick. AND WE GOT THE BALL BACK!! Ok relax we’re only in the most historic stadium going against the #5 ranked team in the nation. And we put our fate in the hands of the freshman Gatewood. Well in one minute, we score thanks to 2 big 4
th down conversions. WE ARE WINNING 38-35 with 1:00 left on the clock. Boot the kickoff. Dennard now is leading his team to beat a lowly school out of New York. Well he does everything and gets his team into field goal range. Fuck. 0:05 left. We had 1 TO left, so we use it to ice the kicker. He takes the kick. It’s up but it’s going to the left. Still going to the left. It hits the ground, just left of the crossbar. He missed it. A hush went over the stadium. #5 ranked Michigan just lost.
The game was clearly a tale of 2 halves. And we happened to click in the second half. What a game. Final score 38-35.
