    Nebraska Cornhuskers Thread

So it's been a crazy offseason so far! Just thought I'd start this thread up & pose a few thoughts and questions to get the convo goin. Gonna be a long month or 2 'til the game comes out & then the season starts.

What kind of record do you guys think this team will end up with? Baring an upset that comes out of nowhere, I personally only see a few games as potential losses: Washington, Texas, Mizzou, Texas A&M and perhaps Okie St because it's on the road in between Texas & Mizzou. I think everything rides on that Texas game. I believe they will be undefeated heading into that one, & if they can come away with a convincing win, in what is sure to be one of the wildest games Memorial Stadium has seen in a LONG time, that momentum will carry them through the rest of their games.

My prediction would be that they beat Texas but stumble elsewhere and end up with 1 loss heading into the Big XII Championship. Depending on how the rest of the country shakes out, I see a BCS game & potentially an NC appearance if other teams (Boise St, Alabama, Ohio St) struggle.

Obviously a lot of this depends on a competent and HEALTHY offense. While I don't think they'll be GREAT by any stretch of the imagination, I think improved health & depth along the Oline will allow them to open up the playbook a little more this year & have some success.

Just a few thoughts to get the conversation rolling!

Washington that finished 5-7 last year as a possible loss?

I'm curious to see how Texas plays without McCoy. Especially in Lincoln.

I only put Washington in there because it will be our first test & it's on the road. I think they'll win that game & by more than 10 points but I just think because of the nature of the game it's a more likely stumbling block than the other games on our schedule.

No starting QB named yet, but rumors keep building that rFr Taylor Martinez will be the starter on Saturday night vs. Western Kentucky over Senior Zac Lee & Soph Cody Green. Though, I don't think it matters who starts until the game against Washington up in Seattle.

And then it just matters that it's not Zac Lee.

The starter ended up being rFr Taylor Martinez, Soph Cody Green played a few drives, and Sr Zac Lee was in later in the game.

Martinez is the first QB in the history of the program to start a season opener as a Freshman or redshirt Freshman. I was pretty impressed by his acceleration. It seemed like he went from 0 to 40 in about two steps, if that. It was tough to tell much though versus WKU, but his passing looked pretty solid as well. Timing and drops were an issue, but that's expected in game one.

The pure run game wasn't very impressive and the D has some work to do. Next up is Idaho and then @ Washington before Homecoming versus South Dakota State.

The one running play highlight I saw from Martinez was ridiculous. 0 to 40 in insane quick time, as you said.

I was highly disappointed in Helu's lackluster stats.

We just couldn't get anything going from the RB spot. Burkhead (Soph who filled in for injured Helu last year) had a nice couple runs making things happen, but save for his exploits and Martinez, we were unable to establish a running attack versus WKU. A lot of fans are upset on how the defense played (gave up 300 yards), but I'm a lot more concerned about the run game. The previous two seasons the offense has been slow to start the season and I'm afraid this will be year #3 of that. It cost us games each year (VT, for example) and has me concerned for games at Washington and Kansas State.

Can't wait to watch the Big Red Wrap Up on Tuesday since I couldn't watch the game last night.

Yeah, running between the tackles left a lot to be desired, which is where they tried to force Helu to. That's a definite concern.

Also, Martinez played pretty well. But he needs more work on his passing. He was throwing too hard on short throws. If the ball is too high or too low, the receiver is not going to have a chance to catch it.

Taylor Martinez was just announced as one of the 16 finalists for the Davey O'Brien award, and is the only freshman semifinalist.

    Rumors going crazy in Lincoln.

    - One is that Taylor Martinez has quit the team, but his HS coach, a LB on Facebook, and a local TV station are now saying that is not true.

    - Bo Pelini to be suspended for one game, but no clue how true that may be. It does seem that he is going to have a sit-down with the Chancellor and/or AD for some of his action Saturday night in College Station. IMO, he has been in an extremely foul mood the last few weeks - more than usual, for whatever reason.

my friends are going to the bowl game out here in california.

they say the OC coach should go because even though he might be good because of the last 2 years of winning. his play calling is too predictable and tries to force plays instead of just working with exploiting an opposing teams weakness as it becomes evident during a game.
