    Article Preview

Monday afternoon, the EA SPORTS NCAA Football Facebook page posted a picture of Oregon RB Kenjon Barner with a caption reading "Sometimes...All you need is a step" while posting the comment that "NCAA Football takes the next step this week...", which seems to all but confirm that the first NCAA Football 14 news will be announced this week.

The March 25 edition of the Eye on College Football Podcast on CBSSports.com featured host Chip Patterson interviewing NCAA Football 14 cover athlete Denard Robinson. The two spent a few moments of the nine-minute podcast discussing Robinson being the winner of the NCAA Football Cover Vote. Robinson said that he "has been playing [NCAA Football] a long time" and that it is an "honor to be on the cover." He went on to add that there is a "big difference" between NCAA Football 13 & 14 and that 14 will be "one of the best NCAA games." While in Orlando for the cover shoot, he said he played a little bit of NCAA 14 and "think[s] it will be a great game," due in part to some "option (game) improvements."

While Robinson may have been vague in details, what improvements are you looking to see in the option game and what NCAA Football 14 news are you hoping to hear first? Share your thoughts with The Gaming Tailgate community in the comments. ...

    Announced Features and Improvements (PS3/360):

    Gameplay
    • Infinity Engine 2 - The Infinity Engine 2 unlocks the unpredictability and innovation of college football, bringing multiple college play-styles to life. Real-time physics. Infinity Engine utilized only in tackles last year (in Madden 13), now applies to ballcarrier as part of Force Impact System. If ball-carrier hits defender in head (stiff-arm), their head will move back. Lowers shoulder into chest, chest moves back as part of collision/hit. Applies to jukes, spin moves, hurdles, dive tackles, tackles, etc. Physics also applied to Hit Stick & Truck Stick. Ball-carrier can now make hard cuts along with foot-planting and de-acceleration on change of direction.
    • Enhanced running game: Ball-carrier will not run into offensive line/teammates and become stuck; they will place hand on teammate as blocks/holes develop. (Additional running game improvements listed below.)
    • Acceleration Burst - Use RT/R2 to accelerate with your player through holes or to the ball-carrier. However, excessive use will fatigue your player. (Players will ramp up to top speed on their own.)
    • New/additional juke moves: Left, right, back; jukes can be combo'd.
    • Option improvements: Over 30 new pitch types (including shovel options & midline options). New playbook solely focused on spread option. "Real AI" that will "teach the AI how to run the option the right way through repetition."
    • Revamped blocking with better targeting logic, including on bubble screens, and double teams & zone blocks. Linemen fire out to the second level more effectively if they clear LOS.
    • Pre-snap option reads (visible with Coach Cam): See read and pitch keys.
    • Personnel-based Playcalling. Also, in no-huddle user restricted to personnel on the field.
    • Defensive Breakdown: As offensive player goes to make move, defender will breakdown in order to not overrun the ball-carrier and make tackle attempt.
    • Stumble Mechanic: As ball-carrier stumbles, pressing back on right stick can help them recover balance (depending on player's rating). (Pushing forward will tell them to dive forward as far as they can.)
    • Ability to set different skill level for Offense and Defense (noticed in video & preview article; not formally announced)
    • Nike Skills Trainer - Hands-on tutorial and videos for new & existing gameplay features.
    • Kinect Integration (360) - Kinect support will be for offline play only and will be similar to what EA SPORTS has done in Madden, focusing on pre-play voice commands.

Grab new items from the Shop or Auction House, as well as picking up special edition Championship Packs, Rivalry Packs, ESPN CFL Game of the Week items and more. It’s the perfect way to experience the college football season year-round. Compete in Solo Challenges or the ultra-competitive Head-to-Head Seasons mode..
    • NFLPA license plus approval from respective schools allow current NFL players to be used in the mode (photos from college days)
    • 1,400 players available at release, will eventually reach 2,500. All 126 programs represented with players.
    • Player cards may feature them as underclassmen, senior, or special Heisman Hopeful, among others.
    • Player card focus on 1990s and after with some players prior as well. (All non-NFLPA players must be individually licensed and in good standing with their university.)
    • Cards available include: players, playbooks, uniforms, & stadiums
    • Starting the mode, players can select favorite team and will be given their uniform & stadium cards.
    • 55 active player roster
    • Modes available include Solo Challenges & Season Mode
    • Some NFUT cards will be unlocked for completing drills/events in the new Skills Trainer feature

    Dynasty
    • There’s no single path to success in college football, so build up your program into a powerhouse to fit your strengths and style of play by utilizing the brand-new Coach Skills & Power Recruiting.
    • POWER RECRUITING: Use a pool of points each week to recruit quickly and get back to the action.
    • Points can be changed each week or set them once for the rest of the season.
    • Locked Out: Recruits will lock out programs not within a certain point range as the season progresses.
    • Dealbreakers: If you are below a certain level for a specific recruiting pitch that a recruit considers most important, you won't even be able to recruit him.
    • Offseason now trimmed to just two weeks, including one last week to make a big splash and land a big commitment.
    • Competitive/Comparative Visits: Utilize more strategy as to when you invite in recruits. If you invite a QB, you'll get a bonus for inviting an OL or WR that same weekend but two QBs in the same weekend will have a negative effect.
    • The later in the season (and following visits to other schools) you schedule a recruit's visit, the more bonus you'll get.
    • DYNASTY COACH SKILLS: A new RPG element to your coaching career which allows coaches to excel in specific areas. There are 18 upgradeable, multi-level skills spread across two skill trees for head coaches, as well as separate skill trees for offensive and defensive coordinators. Altogether, there are 36 upgradeable skills.
    • Coach Levels & Coach Skills: Ramp up and earn XP by achieving goals on the recruiting trail and on the field and as well by achieving milestone records.
    • Head Coach Skill Trees: Game Management & Recruiting. Individual skill trees for OC/DC. Coordinator skills focus on boosts to player ratings in-game.
    • Offensive & Defensive Skills help your coordinators get the most out of your players during the game.
    • As head coach you are in control of how every point is assigned. As coordinator, you are responsible for only the points you earned.
    • Coaching contracts now based on program recent history vs projected (ex. Alabama expects to win 10 to 11 every season). Contract screen now tracks 30 years of each schools history... shows real life results (ex what did Wyoming look like in the 80s).

    Play a Season
    • In Play a Season, you take your favorite team through their full 2013 schedule. There are no off-field commitments (recruiting) to attend to so you are free to leave it all on the field.

In an article from the The Daily Mail (Charleston, WV), last summer EA SPORTS invited members of the West Virginia football staff to help improve the realism and fun when recruiting within Dynasty Mode in NCAA Football.

"Everything we've done for the game previously was what made sense to us and what we felt was the right way to do recruiting with the limited abilities within the game to emulate recruiting and have it be fun," said EA Sports producer Ben Haumiller.

"Then it was, 'OK, we've done that. It's time to change the way recruiting works.' It got a little stale, a little old, and we thought it was time to give it a new feel and a fresh look. We wanted to go out and take advantage of the opportunities we have. We have connections. We bring in coaches to talk Xs and Os and concepts and break down film all the time. We'd never extended to other aspects, particularly recruiting."

"There are definitely features that we've added and things that have happened that are based on the conversation we had with them," producer/designer Christian McLeod said. "There are a couple key points that eventually we'll be able to talk about that are the direct result of the conversation we had."

EA SPORTS has partnered with Facebook to help let fans decide what school will be represented on the cover of NCAA Football 14.

Voting is open for all 126 programs and a series of polls over the next four months will help decide the cover choice. All voting will take place on the official EA SPORTS NCAA Football product page on Facebook.

It is worth noting that Georgia State, Old Dominion, and South Alabama are among the programs listed as voting options so that would appear to confirm their appearance in NCAA 14.

After adding school-specific chants for 20+ programs in NCAA Football 13, Kotaku's Owen Good reports that NCAA 14 will feature real crowd audio from 40 total stadiums. Last weekend, Good aided NCAA producer Ben Haumiller in recording game audio at North Carolina, Duke, and NC State.

In addition to the three North Carolina schools listed above, EA SPORTS has made known resource gathering visits this season to South Alabama, Texas A&M, and will be at Texas State this weekend.

Continue on to read an excerpt of Good's experience and to learn more about the process of adding these school specific audio details to the franchise.

UPDATE - Sunday evening, another article from Good ("Understanding Its Mobs’ Mentality Helps NCAA Football Stand Out in a Crowd") discusses how in real-life crowds sound different at each stadium and that it has yet to be reflected in NCAA Football. ...

An article from Kotaku's Owen Good echoes much of the communities feelings on the NCAA Football series... not enough changes from year to year. That is, nothing is innovative and distinguishes itself from a previous version.

As part of that article, Good reveals that shortly after launch, the NCAA 13 development team was presented with a creative debriefing asking them to guess from various screenshots from NCAA 10 through NCAA 13 which one belonged to each year. The presenter didn't receive an answer.

This past weekend, EA SPORTS visited College Station and Texas A&M University to gather team-related assets for NCAA Football 14, per tweets from TAMU Assistant Vice President of Business Development Shane Hinckley and from the TAMU Equipment Staff.

Tweets from both A&M-related accounts highlight the Yell Leaders being captured and also the A&M locker room. Based upon current in-game assets and features, it is possible - but far from confirmed - that this information could be used for pre-game cutscenes or crowd chants during gameplay in NCAA Football 14 or beyond. NCAA Football 13 saw the addition of Reveille to A&M's pre-game montage.

This marks the second known university to be visited by EA SPORTS this off-season, following a trip to South Alabama in early October. Continue on to see the tweets from Hinckley and the A&M Equipment Staff. ...

Courtesy al.com, EA SPORTS is visiting South Alabama this weekend as they begin prep work on adding the Jaguars to NCAA Football 14.

South Alabama may not be in the game just yet, as the EA Sports advertisement for its "NCAA Football 13'' game suggests, but EA Sports will be in Ladd-Peebles Stadium for the Jaguars' game Saturday against Nicholls State. In fact, the popular game company has been in the stadium since Thursday, collecting data, photographic and video scans and interviews for South Alabama's inclusion in the video game next year.

Due to "misinformation,'' according to site producer Ben Haumiller, the Jags were left out of this year's game, the only one of the 124 eligible Football Bowl Subdivision teams not to be included. When news reached South Alabama students and fans prior to the release of "NCAA Football 13,'' several requested the Jags be added to the game. It was too late to add USA to this year's game, but EA Sports offered to make it up to the school by providing extras for the Jags when they are added to the roster of teams in next year's game.
