I read them both. One where he said we would not advance and then his 180 where he said we could. My point is you really can't say anything after just one win. Unless I am missing something.

Yeah, I remember that. That set off a whole separate firestorm online. Hey, they don't pay him to blow rainbows and sunshine up the asses of Americans. And he was stating truth. We still need at least a draw against Portugal to have a favorable chance of escaping group.

Guys, I'm speaking relative to the competition. I'm aware that we're better than most of the world but when compared to the top teams, we're going to look like the Heat against the Spurs. That's the point I'm expressing.

Dude, NO ONE thinks the US will win the World Cup.

Oh, and according to FIFA, we're better than Chile, the Netherlands, France, Mexico, etc.

Results are more important than style.

Then he did a reversal with, "Klinsmann said his return flight home isn’t until after the July 13 final."

How do you get him reversing on what he said about the US' chances from that? I read that and first thing I see is that regardless of how the US does, he's going to be staying there through the final, if anything, to watch and attend the various matches. I don't see anything there that suggests he suddenly reversed course and thinks the US would make the final.

You can take it however you wish. I think he was simply trying to instill confidence after playing Debbie Downer and leaves some hope the US advances to the knockout stage.

And after watching today's game, we all can see why.

How we played today was good enough to beat Ghana but against Portugal (if Portugal plays how they're expected to play) and Germany, those are 2 L's, easily.

After today, and even before, I think Germany has already always been pre-marked as a loss. We did what we had to do to beat Ghana, but I just don't see us having any chance against Germany, unless they play all back ups and sleepwalk through the match. The only question is do we lose by less than or more than 5 goals? Well, two questions, the second being will we even score a goal against the Germans?

I think if you watched a bit of football, you'd be surprised at how a lesser team can earn a result against a powerful opponent by simply taking space away at the expense of possession.

I watch it happen to Chelsea all the time and watched an extremely shorthanded Chelsea side do it to Liverpool at Anfield late this season.

We'll see what happens. Who thought Costa Rica would beat Uruguay? Or that the Dutch would destroy Spain?

63% chance for the U.S. to advance (I think we started at like 33% before today)

Well, I personally think I'm going to wait and see how we do against Portugal before considering us having better than 50% odds of advancing. A win over Ghana is one thing. We've still got to take on the two "powerhouses" of the group in Portugal and Germany. How we play against Portugal will determine our chances. If we lose, it's over because Germany will kill us.

The initial SPI, immediately after the draw, had USA at 39% and Portugal at 40%. I just went back to the World Football thread and checked.

I know there are some here (and everywhere) that think the US has very little shot at getting any result from the match with Portugal. I think you may be surprised. The US can play with Portugal.

Add to the fact that the US is currently +5 in differential, compared to the Portuguese, Ronaldo being less than 100% and Pepe (their best defender) being suspended. I'd say 53% is fair right now. That said, a point against Portugal is a MUST.

    Gonna be fun to watch.

Portugal is either going to come out flat (i.e. they have given up and will just walk through the remaining games and go home) or they will come out with their hair on fire knowing they MUST get 3 points against the US. Assuming Portugal puts forth an honest effort, I don't think a W is likely but a draw is certainly possible.

The key to the Portugal game will likely be conditioning. I believe we are playing in the damn rain forest the next game (same site England Italy). England looked GASSED at the end and had nothing in the tank by the end of the game. We also looked a little gassed towards the end of the Ghana game and the heat/humidity is only going to be worse next match.

I suspect Germany torches Ghana (2 or 3-0) and then decide to rest a large chunk of their team in the final against the U.S.

Very exciting game today as Belgium beat Algeria 2-1. I was pretty nervous after the 1st half. I thought the call for the penalty kick in the 1st half was a very, very weak call. I'm glad that the game was not settled on that.

Really pulling for Mexico in this game versus Brazil. They are definitely underdogs but they are putting forth a strong effort.
