I think it is an advantage. Thoughts?

    http://m.therepublic.com/view/story/...mNKlH1U.mailto

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State sought and received a waiver from the NCAA that allows it to have two football coaching staffs at the same time: One under Luke Fickell to coach the Buckeyes in their upcoming bowl game and another led by incoming coach Urban Meyer that only handles recruiting.

Athletic director Gene Smith called the split staffs "normal in some transitions."

The Buckeyes play Florida in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 2. But Meyer and any new staffers are not permitted to coach any players and can only recruit. The NCAA waiver specifies that no more than 10 coaches — and no more than seven at any one time — may be involved in recruiting.

There have been rumblings from other schools that the waiver gives Ohio State a competitive advantage.

Given their history of secondary violations, I don't see how or why the NCAA would let this happen.

Have any other schools gotten this exception?

You know I'm not sure if it has happened in the past. I'll have to check that out but it is the first I've heard of such a thing.

Another interesting question, since Fickle is on the Meyer staff what is the difference between the two "staffs" then?

Here is the Miami Waiver from last year.

The staff granted with the following conditions: (1) Not more than seven coaches may engage in off-campus recruiting on behalf of applicant institution at any one time and no more than 10 coaches may engage in any recruiting activities; (2) The three new assistant coaches may only engage in recruiting activities and may not engage in any other coaching activities. Further, applicant institution must designate three existing assistant coaches who will cease all recruiting activities. The staff noted this request only provides relief from the maximum number of football coaches permitted to be employed by an FBS institution (one head coach and nine assistants) and the waiver is effective through the conclusion of applicant institution’s bowl game December 31. The request was granted based on case precedent, the extenuating circumstances surrounding the changes in coaching personnel and the timing of the bowl game.

In theory that sounds great, but who is going to monitor and watch all that?

Exactly, we all know that the NCAA sure as hell isn't going to. Pretty much a free pass is what I'm taking it as. Free reign to use to your advantage in any way possible.

I'm not overly upset at this waiver.

They are going to have twice the recruiting and scouting power that they normally would. Seems pretty fucked up to me...

UNC was. I have a feeling that most schools that hire a new head coach are, just no one's talked about it before.

In reality, the primary reason for the waiver was Meyer himself. His hire, since we didn't fire our current head coach, would have put us over the 10 coach limit. Now, as we hire other coaches, maybe they come on staff now rather than later (I'm not sure how that all works when you have other commitments), but the primary reason for the waiver was Urban Meyer.

    WTF!?
Auburn’s Gus Malzahn is early favorite for Arkansas State job

So he turns down $2.5 million from an SEC school only to take a job getting paid $500,000 (at best) in the SBC... yeah, um... no. Not sure if that's just some Alabama fan with wishful thinking or what but I give 1% chance that we get Malzahn.

Instead, latest rumors are Mike Canales, OC at UNT (OC under Leavitt at USF) as well as Eddie Gran, RB coach at Florida State. I'm in the Canales group but with the right staff around Gran, I could get behind it as well.

    Five most likely candidates are:
Eddie Gran - FSU HB coach, strong recruiter
    Mike Canales - UNT OC
    Neal Brown - TTU OC
Randy Fitchner - Steelers QB coach
Frank Wilson - LSU HB coach

Out of those 5, I know very little about Wilson but based on his credentials, he would be a tough sell.

I know he's had 2 tenures at Memphis and is, reportedly, interested in that job. He's been on the Steelers staff since '07 and has been the QB coach the last 2 years (he was the WR coach before that).

I haven't heard his name associated with Arkansas State, from a Steelers side of things.

Being that he's, at least, played/coached DBs, coached WRs and QBs, I'd guess he is versatile and well-rounded enough to make a move like this. I know Tomlin thinks highly of him.

Memphis has already hired their coach. Fichtner coached at ASU along with Tomlin under Joe Hollis... supposedly he had some interest in us early on but not sure if that waned after he heard what we would pay (probably around what he makes now) compared to what Memphis would pay.

During my drive home in the evenings, Paul Finebaum is simulcast on Sirius XM. Since I'm a glutton for punishment, I choose to partake. There was a discussion last week that Malzahn's wife, and her recent "tour def force" of a rant, has killed any chance that Malzahn gets an SEC job, at least at this time. I don't profess to understand this reasoning, but it's out there.
