IMO Gonzaga is overrated.
Coaches fear controversial new rule changes may result in the year of the whistle
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaab-...72--ncaab.html
Oh Christ. :fp:
If it gets to the point where they can't go more than 30 seconds without a whistle, I'm gonna stop watching college basketball. I love college basketball, but I fucking hate this whistle every 15-30 seconds bullshit that completely destroys momentum for teams, it runs the flow of the game and it just makes the game drag on and on and makes me more willing to find someone else to watch.
WVU scrimmage against Fairmont State was like that too. Game lasted like 2 1/2 hours and hit the 2 hour mark with a good 7 minutes left in the game before they stopped calling as many fouls and let them play a little bit at the end. It was pretty disgusting to watch.
Well we are officially underway now.
Nebraska played Sweet 16 Cinderella Florida Gulf Coast last night. Even though FGCU returned 4 starters, NU destroyed them to open up the new Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Sent from my DROID RAZR Maxx since I'm too lazy to get to the CPU using Tapatalk 4
The statistical variance that was "Dunk City" has come back down to earth. They were just barely a top 100 basketball team last season going off of the efficiency ratings and currently rated 151 on Kenpom this season.
If you are a small school its all about getting "hot" at the right time.
Yeah. They just barely got into the tournament last year which was what made their run all that more interesting to watch.
New coach also didn't help FGCU, but Nebraska usually struggles with Directional Tech State in basketball non-conference so it was an impressive win, regardless of foe.
NU opened a new arena and had Karmin (the female group member is from NE) sing the National Anthem and Tommy Lee DJ'd before the game.
Re: rule change. It's bad enough when it's two good teams that get dragged down, but the game becomes completely unwatchable when two poor teams cannot play for more than 20-30 seconds per call.
STAT OF THE DAY: yesterday, five teams attempted at least 50 free throws. Last season, 11 did -- the ENTIRE season.

yep going to be lots of whistles this season thanks to the fine folks at ESPN who apparently own college basketball and Jay Bilas with his idiotic ideas about not permitting defense being good for the game.
The ESPN commentators last night were constantly talking about the new rules and how its great for the game and we will just have to adjust to the officials who are just doing what they are told.

BIG night tomorrow I cannot remember a double header scheduled like this ever 4 of the top 5 in the same gym on one night.
Oh shit, that's right, the 24 Hours of College Hoops marathon is going on right now. I completely forgot. Hell yeah! I know what I'm watching all night.
Don't say I didn't warn you CLW. I told you that your trolling the Xbox One thread was going to cost Duke losses. :D

:D
There are just some things I love and they are all attributed to bandwagon teams.
The Cowboys losing.
Manchester United losing.
The Yankees losing.
Notre Dame losing.
and
Duke losing in basketball. Ironically I am rooting for the football team. So it's not just you CLW, though it is a happy coincidence.
I got called for a foul lastnight while watching those two games
Hate to say it but those will be the last college basketball games I watch until March Madness...and even then it will be limited.
That Duke/KU game was terribly long.
In 10 trips down the court in the 2nd half there were foul shots each time it seemed.
Yep. Ohio State had 51 fucking free throws last night against Ohio. Just absolutely ridiculous. I can't watch this crap anymore. There's no flow up and down the court anymore, it's run up the court then stop for a minute or two to take a couple free throws, rinse wash and repeat all game.
Jabari Parker though
Exactly! No flow at all, especially during the crunch time last 5-6 minutes of the game. Kansas nearly made more FT's than FG's in the game.
I found myself excited for the game, then pissed about the constant stoppages, back to excited, then back to pissed. Watching it is tough, could you imagine playing in the game?
Or even being there in person.
On another note I like Parker's game alot. I've watched him twice now so far.
That actually happened for Ohio State. They were 38-51 for free throws. They were 18-44 for FGs. Hell, Ohio State almost made as many free throws as they attempted FGs in the entire game. :fp:
That just completely kills the enjoyment of the game for me. Unfortunately, I'm in the same boat, I doubt I watch much, if any college basketball during the regular season. Probably won't pick it up until March Madness if I have to deal with this crap all season. :smh:
I accidentally watched about 5 minutes of this shit last night. The world needs Dick Vitale to die. That old fuck is unbelievably annoying. He, alone, would make college basketball unwatchable if I wanted to watch.
Duke is a major WIP right now (especially defensively). But at least the KU fans had enough class to not storm the court then again it was neutral site so the streak of court stormings remains.
Yeah, I've only watched the first WVU game so far, and the amount of free throws was pretty disgusting. Not looking forward to college basketball in the least with the rule changes this year.
I agree with you that this "Jay Bilas" ball (as I am calling it b/c he's the ringleader of this crap) is going to RUIN the game. You simply cannot play defense anymore b/c the official will blow the whistle when/if they see ANY contact (or sometimes anything close to contact). I also haven't seen a charge called all year either.
basically teams SHOULD just sit in a zone make the team jack 3s and hope they cant shoot b/c if the team can dribble you cannot stop a driver without "fouling".
it ruins the flow and it becomes a free throw shooting contest (which Duke and Kentucky both lost last night)
the officiating last night was bad both ways during both games and its going to be REALLY interesting to see if the whistles stay this fast and furious during march.
I'm betting they don't and you see a completely different basketball in March (back to the old ways) and Jay Bilas ESPN et al will cheer how they cleaned the game up and everything is great now.
Well, if Vermont makes the NCAA tournament, I know who I am picking for some upsets. Vermont leading #6 Duke 78-77 with 4:03 left in the game, and have been right there with Duke, punch for punch, pretty much the entire game.
A foul on a made 3-pointer, with the free throw good, and Vermont pulls back even with Duke at 90-90 with 10.4 seconds remaining. What a game!
Goddamnit! Duke wins 91-90 because the dumbasses on Vermont decide to dribble to the basket from the sideline with 0.4 seconds left instead of the only option they had, catch and shooting it, the clock running out long before he even made an attempt to shoot.
Regardless, I'm automatically picking Vermont in the first round of the NCAA tournament if they make it. Took Duke down to the very end of the game and lost by one (and could have won by one) on Duke's home court, I'm taking my chances with them in the tourney.
I wouldn't necessarily go that far based off one game. :Duke: is AWFUL right now on defense. K REALLY ripped them in the post game presser as well all but calling them out for a lack of heart/effort on D.
Duke's rated in the 170s right now on D so basically Vermont carved up a below average college defense. They just came up 1 point short against the #1 offense right now in college basketball.
Great postgame conference by SIU coach Barry Hinson :D the audio link is in the webpage.

Regardless of the rules this season, the college basketball referees have REALLY sucked over the past couple/several years. It has been making it hard to enjoy games because the consistency has been so poor.
As it pertains to THIS season, after the initial foul fests, the refs and the players are leveling things out such that the length of games hasn't been brutally impacted, and the number of calls is stabilizing.
However, the consistency of refs in the college game is still a joke. So bad that it makes one want replay made available, although that would be a pain and really piss off the flow of a game.
I'm sure the hack-a-defense teams like MSU still hate the new rules though.
What's fuckin' sad is he's getting berated for it when, from the looks of the stats for the game and the way he's talking, he's dealing with children that don't want to have a coach tell them how to play and don't want to try or learn the game. I feel bad for the guy because, apparently, the coach that was there before him let these kids just do whatever they wanted to do and tried to be their friend instead of being hard on them when they didn't live up to their potential and failed miserably on the court.
It's really sad how far the generation of coddling and everyone wins has went when a coach that's trying to use some media exposure as a way to wake his freakin' ballplayers up and is, instead, lambasted by a bunch of journalists and has-been parents that don't have a clue what they're talkin' about.
FGCU loses at USF last night when the refs ruled that this was not a tip-in:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=868Od1LTAmI
I thought the rule was that you couldn't take a jump shot (feet coming off the ground) in that time, but apparently they can rule what defines a tip-in by how much of a player's hand touches the ball? He was in the air and got the ball in the basket in time. For my money, that should have counted. Either a dumb rule or the refs were making it up as they went along.
Holy Jesus! Southern Unversity possum stomped Champion Baptist College, of the Association of Christian Collegiate Athletics, 116-12. It was 44-0, an NCAA record, before CBC even scored their first points of the entire game! Southern outscored Champion 57-6 in the first half and 59-6 in the second half. Talk about a can of whoop ass!
