NPD May 2013
The Bad
Overall retail industry down 25%. Software sales lowest since May 2000.
The Sad
In May, Xbox 360 sold 114,00[0] units, more than any other console in the U.S. May marked the 29th consecutive month that Xbox 360 was the best-selling console in the U.S.
Nobody is buying anything right now. My money is on people saving up for next gen. If not, the shit could hit the fan.
That was the very first thing that came to mind. The news has been out about next-gen consoles for months now. No one is going to spend a couple hundred on a PS3 or 360 when the new next-gen consoles will hit shelves in 5 months.
The WiiU not selling well is a STRONG indication that the market itself is way down. Don't be surprised if neither console sells as well as expected.
Or a strong indication that people simply were not interested in buying a console that had comparable graphics to what was already on the market, a weak software library, poor third party support, crippled EA Sports games and no next gen Mario, Metroid or Zelda in sight. They also stepped away from the casual gamers with the big feature being a gamepad. Mario and Zelda will bring in plenty of customers, Nintendo is not doomed thanks to money in the bank and the 3DS printing money. They went Gamecube and they will probably
I have no doubt the economy is playing some part but the majority of the WiiU sales issues lie in the decision making at corporate.
Exactly. I don't think the market has much to do with it. Nintendo released a current generation console 6 years after Microsoft and Sony, have a bare library, and are charging a ridiculous $350 for it. That thing should have never been above $250. I've also never thought it was too bright to release a console that has comparable graphics to the PS3 and 360 right around the time everyone is getting hyped for the next generation, either.
But, I do believe that if they cut the price and get some games on it, it'll be fine.
Sony has set their expectations really high based on this comment.
Could be some sad little kiddies with no PS4 under the tree this Christmas.
Yeah I dunno if it will reach Wii levels but the PS4 is going to be HOT this xmas. The E3 conference re: DRM has created a buzz along with the $100 lower price point and you have a perfect recipe that could mean demand exceeds supply.
MS may also have this problem but IMHO it will be more likely a result from being behind in manufacturing. But make no mistake about it MS will "spin" it too with we cannot keep up with the demand ignoring the fact that the demand for PS4 is simply greater by a factor of X.
I guess I'm not following.......besides the used game crap system that MS went with, what is the suck about XB1? The supposed lacking tech specs or what? It has more features (streaming TV, Skype, etc.) when I look at side-by-side charts out on the 'net, but it costs $100 more. The security stuff looks overhyped.
The used game thing does suck, but what else am I missing that is causing the backlash?
List of either real/perceived advantages of PS4 over XB1
- Better memory / 50% more power (DDR5 v. DDR3)
- $100 lower price point
- DRM / Sharing / Used / Rentals
- No Kinect / Big Brother / "Privacy" Issues
That's it and really its a personal taste thing on the exclusives and controller.
There also could be an advantage to buying the more popular console. There always is a threat that a company will drop support for a console if it tanks. I don't think it will happen with XB1 but you never know.
CLW, I appreciate the objective answer.
It doesn't seem like either system has that many exclusive titles, so there isn't a roadblock there either for which way to "go". Although if budget could swing it, I'd like both, but not really worth it with so many shared titles.
I saw that posted and the theoretical gains but it would be interesting to see if that actually amounted to drastic difference. The graphical gains to the user isn't linear for the power increase, but perhaps the PS4 lives longer?Quote:

Not being a PC gamer anymore, specs don't always impress me, but I'm curious why PS4 doesn't offer the streaming gateway that XB1 does? Would love to get my Netflix and such through it.
Yeah. $100 is "nothing" to me, so not a big deal there. $100 buys me all the TV, streaming, Skype capability which I actually have use for since I don't subscribe to cable or satellite anymore. All internet, baby!Quote:

Yes, the used game thing sucks. I don't like that since I buy most games used on Ebay for cheap these days. But I don't play at friends' houses, I don't carry my system anyway, I play mainly single-player stuff anyway these days.........I don't rent games either. Sometimes share games with a friend, but no more than a couple a year.........Quote:

Plus isn't M$ giving away free full games to Gold subscribers?
Both cost money to access all of their online stuff.
That stuff can be turned off, so what is the problem?Quote:

Hell, all of our browsers, FB, etc. are "watching" what we surf now and tailoring ads as we surf, so.............
I had multiple PS and PS2 back in the day, but didn't go PS3 route......just trying to understand what saving $100 if I went the PS4 route "gains" me versus what the XB1 does.
Playstation Plus gives some real solid retail titles too.

The sheer amount of free games/stuff definitely made it was a better value than I ever got with XBL. I mean even when trying to copy Sony MS lays an egg with the free games they toss out. The one area where XBL dominates is in the exclusive arcade games and I do not see that happening the next gen as MS seems to be angering the Indie developers. Not to mention the next Trials will be multi-console.
Well I think PS4 will also have "most" of the apps (Netflix; Amazon; Hulu; etc....). I'm not interested in any of that stuff really but I think most of the apps will be on both consoles but perhaps there are some exclusives.
I should note XB1 doesn't give you "tv" unless you hook it up through an actual cable provider's DVR/box.
I just disagree with the whole "you can turn it off" concept. Yes MS has said this but it isn't off and MS has admitted that it is always listening for "XBox On". I just don't believe it can "ignore" everything else said while still being on to listen for "XBox On". But as long as you know what it is doing and don't have a problem with MS collecting info on you selling that info to others and the government also gaining that info on you more power to you.
??
He laid out a nice list for me and didn't go fanboy on me. Sorry, you went over my head, I'm not following.......
It was stated that you could turn that off too. You don't have voice commands to turn it on then, but I don't have that now and don't care...........because I have a Logitech Harmony remote anyway. :DQuote:

You mean the info they already have? Better stop using browsers too. ;)Quote:

No, I don't "like" it, but owning a PS4 or XB1 is hardly the only source they have ability to get at.........I'm pretty sure the items I have registered with ATF puts me on a "hotter" government list anyway compared to them finding out that I play games, buy game content, or am feeding my kids chicken nuggets or fish sticks on a particular night. :D
That being said, all that stuff would be turned off if I went the XB1 route.
Yep, understand. I didn't spell that out clearly either and don't expect that it does. You think PS4 will have ESPN app? I use XBL for ESPN now.......since I have AT&T U-verse for internet, it is an affiliated partner.Quote:
