That's not what that says.

Publishers of PS4 games, then, can do what's already done on existing PlayStation software: Limit or lock content behind online passes or redemption codes (or opt out of restrictions altogether), which differs from Microsoft's limited licensing of Xbox One software

There's 2 different things there. It says they can lock content. That content could potentially be an entire game behind one of those redemption codes. They are not only talking about online passes.

IMHO you and IOU keep believing in "Supply" (publishers will force this down consumers throats like it or not) over "Demand" (consumers simply will not buy a DRM product)

Publishers can do what they want but if they force some ridiculous DRM restriction on their game the game simply will NOT sell very well on PS4. PS4 is going to have a base of consumers now who care about this issue a great deal and so Publishers can do what they like but they could easily be giving up a ton of profits.

I'm not saying they're going to do it or not. I'm just saying they can. Personally, I do think some of them are going to try it, but unless there's massive online problems, I don't think it'll affect sales. People said the exact same thing about online passes this generation and that didn't affect sales at all.

You actually have no idea what they are going to HAVE to do. There's a lot of vague words being thrown out there by PS. I understand what you are saying but all I'm saying is I can see what IOU is saying in the fact that a publisher would probably want to limit used games on both systems if they are being limited on one.

Well we can argue cause/effect if you like but game sales have been going down ever since the implementation of these codes.

Yeah, they're not going to block them on one system and not the other. No way. They're either blocking them on both or not at all, and considering EA's partnership with Microsoft over this whole thing, which way do you think the largest video games publisher in the world is leaning?

While I understand that theory, it will never happen. Consumers will continue to buy no matter what. We forget that the biggest market for gaming systems are the younger generation and parents will buy them whatever they want to play their games.

And if you start blocking the full game, you're not really going to help the bottom line. People will just wait til the price of a new game gets cheaper on Amazon. It's not going to help first week sales by blocking access without a code or DRM. It's just like going to the movie theatre. People quit going because it was cheaper to wait and watch it on the own home entertainment system because it got too expensive.

Well this convo is going nowhere. JB and I see it as just PS3 policy continued on PS4 (which is substantially different from XB1) you guys think all/most publishers are just going to ban used games on their own with all sorts of crazy DRM rules/regs.

We shall see what happens but no publishers that pulls some stunt like that will EVER get my $60.

I would note the comments in the IGN article indicate that the Sony guy said more than IGN quoted as.

It wont help or hurt first week sales, and yes, just like people, people will most certainly wait for the price to drop. It's not about that. It's about second hand sales. You buy a used game now for $30. That's $30 the publisher doesn't get. You finish it and then you trade it in towards another title. You get $15 trade in credit. You buy another used game for $30. They technically just missed out on another $45. That is what they want to eliminate.

This stuff isn't going to affect first week sales, but if they implement it, it will end up making them more money in the process.

I would go as far to say it is. If they blocked used games on Microsoft and not Sony, then all the Microsoft people are pissed. Besides, blocking games on one system and not the other is about as stupid as only selling your games on one system. On one system you'd be making FULL potential profit and on the other, you'd still be losing money on used games. That literally makes zero sense whatsoever. If they block used games on the Xbox One (and so far, no one has said they will, but that wont come out until later), then they're going to block the same ones on PS4.

All of that stuff still falls into the "if the publisher allows it" thing I've been saying. Do you mean to tell me the PS4 is going to somehow magically allow a game to be played without being authorized when the publisher requires it to be authorized?

This is 100% with the publisher. Jack Tretton is not involved, he's just talking about how it's designed. If the publishers want to require authorization, whether it be a serial code locking the whole game or requiring a constant connection, they can. I don't understand what's so hard to understand about all of this. This isn't my opinion, this is a FACT stated by Sony themselves. The absolutely ONLY debatable opinion in all of this is whether or not publishers will actually do this. Sony allowing publishers free reign to decide for themselves though, is 100% fact.
