sorry
I appreciate it guys. It's like getting sucker punched in the guts. The oncologist had been really optimistic and hopeful, only to get this kind of news. While it's not extremely dire, only weeks or months, the fact that it's now official that there's only so long, whether it be one year or five years, knowing that time is slowly ticking down, it's been rough.
We've been handling the news well all evening, but sitting here now alone, thinking about it, god it's starting to shake me. If I didn't have to work in a couple hours, I'd probably walk down to the nearest bar and crawl inside a bottle of whiskey.
I know how you feel, my dad is in the hospital 300 miles away with blood clots in his lungs. You just have to appreciate the time you have with your family, instead of hiding in the bottle of whiskey. Even went through this myself years ago and went from only having a few minutes to live, to a rare incurable disease with no idea what lifespan I had, to 5 years later and it has been in remission.
Before you head down that road of hitting the bottle, hit me up and we can talk, will PM you my number.
I'm really sorry to hear that, Smooth. bdoughty is right (I know you didn't mean you were going to suddenly become an alcoholic). Spend as much time with your mother as you can.
Thanks steeler. I won't be becoming an alcoholic. I actually hardly drink beer anymore. I haven't had any alcohol since Super Bowl Sunday. But, I sure feel like I could go for some right now. Like I said, it sort of comes in waves. Most of the time I'm good and hold up pretty well. When I'm alone or just sitting there thinking about everything going on, that's when it hits me.
Of course, it probably doesn't help that I've had some sort of mild level of depression throughout my life. Never been diagnosed by a doctor, never taken any medication, but every now and then I'll just go into this depression funk for anywhere from a day or two to a couple weeks. Then, just as suddenly as it hit, I snap right back out of it.
So that probably isn't helping too much, between just sort of being depressed over all of this stuff for the past month, being busy as hell at home between taking care of the pets, making dinner, doing the dishes, doing laundry, sweeping and cleaning the house, refilling my mom's drinks, refilling her bird feeders, whatever else needs done, leaving me pretty well exhausted day after day, on top of all the mental games going on in my head.
At least I know I can always hope on here any time, day or night and get whatever I need to off my chest. That'll certainly help. Thanks guys.
Yeah, you certainly can unload here, brother. :)
Sorry to hear that Smooth but :sf: is right you can unload here!
I'm so sorry to hear the news Smooth. My prayers go out to you, your mother and your family. Regardless of what some people may think, I am a true believer in the power of positive thoughts. Stay strong; stay positive... keep the faith brother and let's pray that your mom can beat this.
Sport that has fallen off? Paintball. Was a $240M biz in the US in 2008, steadily declined to $139M last year (H/T @TheSFIA)

I can believe it. The last time I went paintballing was clear back in high school a good 10-11 years ago. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if I go the rest of my life without ever picking up a paintball gun again.
I remember how huge it was back in high school back in the late 90's even, so the industry did sustain longevity so to speak.
I bought a paintball gun when in I was in high school. Never really played, just used it for drive-bys. :D
I took Paintball as a class in college.
Not surprised :D
Sent from my DROID RAZR Maxx since I'm too lazy to get to the CPU.
Need some opinions here. A bit of backstory...
My wife & I have been hearing a bump noise under our floorboards when the washing machine or dishwasher kicks on. We called our regular plumbing crew out and they seemed to think it'd be an easy fix such as a loose clamp or something. The guy investigates under the house and comes back out telling my wife we have big problems with old/corroded copper pipes, shows her a picture (including one with a set of vice grips holding a pipe in place). Tells her that we're lucky we didn't have a pipe burst in the winter and we'll probably have to have all our pipes replaced. Fine, we trust this company but we want to have a second opinion.
Fast forward to yesterday, my wife calls a plumber company (BBB rated A+) and tells the guy on the line what's going on, that we want someone to inspect the pipes under our house and see if they come to the same conclusion. They say it will be $59 to send someone out. Great... we can deal with that. Then comes this morning, two guys show up and say "yeah, that $59 is just a dispatch fee, for us to actually get to work will cost you another $186". I told them to fuck off.
Is that normal business practice around you guys?
So another $186 on top of that just to "look"? Not actually "work"?
Did you still have to pay the $59?
Yeah, the $186 was just to under the house and inspect and give us their opinion.
I told them we refuse to pay the $59 because they hadn't even picked up a tool. He said that we still have to pay it and I said "well send us a bill". He didn't like that either but we'll let them take us to small claims court or something.
