Reports stating Freeze has taken Ole Miss job. ASU opening now added to list.
Carl Pelini approved by the board of trustees at FAU.
FAU announces hire of former Nebraska DC Carl Pelini. Five year deal worth $2.49M with incentives.
2 P.M. Press Conference announcing Hugh Freeze as new Ole Miss HC. Archie Manning already sent out a video stating it as well. Looks like Freeze's players all loved him and are actually happy for him. Frampton and others messaging him on Twitter.
Tulane has hired Saints wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson as the new head coach of the Green Wave.
Kevin Sumlin and Larry Fedora interviewed with A&M AD Bill Byrne for 2+ hours on Monday in NYC. Source
Strong rumors that Larry Fedora is going from Southern Miss to North Carolina; Kevin Sumlin from Houston to Illinois.
It'll be interesting to see who Southern Miss and Houston go after if those rumors become fact. Hire the wrong coaches, and the Southern Miss and Houston that we have right now, doing good and ending each year with good records, will potentially drop into pit of non-existence when it comes to football records, conference championships and bowl games.
The three biggest names getting the most discussion from ASU fans are:
Jim Leavitt - overall everyone's #1 choice I think... aside from his run-in with hitting a player, the guy's a winner. He's currently the LB coach with the 49ers
Randy Fitchner - QB coach for the Steelers, he was the OC from 97-01. Said he wants to get into college coaching. He's also being rumored for Memphis... they'll pay a lot more, but we're a better situation.
Trooper Taylor - WR coach for Auburn. Rumor is Freeze suggested him on his way out the door. He's a polarizing figure and would be a tough sell for some of our fans due to his rah-rah attitude and rumors of being a dirty recruiter.
Based on the rumor mill, it sounds like the Sumlin-to-Illinois rumors are way off, but Fedora-to-UNC is all but a done deal.
Also hearing Alabama OC Jim McElwain is in the lead for the Memphis job.
AD Bill Byrne fired RC Slocum who went 123-47-2 at the school His two hires since then (Franchione & Sherman) have gone a combined 57-54. He must be getting bonus points for his basketball hires (Gillispie, Turgeon, Kennedy) and move to the SEC. Most ADs don't get to hire three football coaches without getting the ax.
SPORTSbyBROOKS posted earlier there's a rumor Slocum reached out to Tommy Tuberville to gauge his interest for the A&M job. :D Who knows how true that is.
Rumor is that Jim Leavitt is interested in the ASU job... if that's the case, it should be a short search.
Larry Fedora to UNC; Joe Schad reporting June Jones to be next coach at Arizona State.
Now "sources" are saying talks between Jones and ASU have broken down and he will not be the next coach for the Sun Devils.
Heard that too.
- It sounds like some combination of booster/fan backlash and/or unwillingness to pay Jones' SMU buyout that led to the offer being pulled.
- More 'rumors' that Sumlin is heading to A&M.
- Also some rumors that Kansas may have interest in Gators OC Charlie Weis.
Memphis TV reporting that last night Alabama OC Jim McElwain accepted the job, only to change his mind today. New rumor has TCU co-OC Justin Fuente as accepting the job.
jim tressel to ucla?
Charlie Weis will be the next head coach at Kansas. Probably the most interesting hire of the off-season (at least so far).
UCLA is looking at Tennessee DC Justin Wilcox.
That is quite the hire for KU.
Take a look at these HC hires in the NCAA this year....Charlie Weis, Urban Meyer, Bob Davie, Mike Leach, Rich Rodriguez...WOW
Rumors floating around that A&M has offered Mark Richt.
While the Weis hire drew skepticism and critics, it seems like Arizona State and Texas A&M have been downright dysfunctional in looking for a new coach.
If schools are going to drag some of these guys out of moth balls (Charlie Weis, Urban Meyer, Bob Davie, Mike Leach, Rich Rodriguez; Pasqualoni & Coker last year), Phil Fulmer should be getting some calls as well. Hell, Maryland fans would probably take him in a second right now.
I saw a passing mention that Ohio's former AD is now at Fresno and had some interesting in bringing Frank Solich to Fresno State. I haven't heard if that was speculation or anything legit to that rumor.
Word in Toledo is that Rockets head coach Tim Beckman will be leaving the school for a coaching position elsewhere. No word on if it will be a jump to another head coach position or an assistant position.
The Toledo media is reporting the Toledo Rockets head coach Tim Beckman has accepted an offer to become the new head coach at Illinois.
Quote:
TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – Multiple sources within the school's athletic department tell WTOL11's Jordan Strack University of Toledo Head Football Tim Beckman has accepted the head coaching job at the University of Illinois.
Beckman coached the Rockets for three seasons, with an overall record of 21 – 16, winning 16 of his 22 Mid-American Conference games. Beckman also lead Toledo to back-to-back bowl games, including their Dec. 28 match up with Air Force in the Military Bowl. Sources say it is now unlikely Beckman will coach the Rockets in that game.
Beckman makes about $400,000 per year at Toledo, and will reportedly make up to four times that amount at Illinois.

I dunno if they're getting these coaches out of moth balls, with the exception of Davie all have coached or on the radar for a position (Leach) in the last two years.
With all these former Irish flops getting jobs, where is Tyrone Willingham? :D

Sounds like the AD at Arizona State just pulled the deal to June Jones with no reason. Sources are saying she's not going to last the school year anyways.
It's just a saying. :fp: I don't literally think they sleep in cedar chests.
Every call probably gets him excited....only to find out it's a debt collector who misdialed. :(
I thought Willingham landed on his feet by getting a role on NCIS?
