AMC is expanding its lucrative Walking Dead franchise.

The cabler announced Monday that it is in the early stages of developing a “companion series” — aka spinoff — to its monster smash, slated to launch in 2015.

Series creator Robert Kirkman will serve as an exec producer on the offshoot, alongside fellow EPs Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert.

“Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” said AMC prez Charlie Collier in a statement. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

Added Kirkman: “After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

Season 4 of The Walking Dead premieres Oct. 13.

It'll be really great or really terrible.

If it takes off, it could tell more of the backstory of the virus itself. Though, a crossover episode/character(s) are inevitable.

Yeah I agree. I don't see it just being ok and sticking around for a couple of years. It either dies right away or is great.

I'm not sure what I would want. I definitely would want completely new characters but not sure if I want backstory or just other peoples adventures. It's cool to see those webisodes they do that is right when everything breaks but the TellTale game with different people same time frame was cool.

Nice to see they're adding the Tyreese scene from the comic book even if it doesn't seem to be taking place in the prison (re: trailer).

I think it's cool they're doing a spin off series. I'll definitely check it out. Maybe they can bring back Lennie James since Low Winter Sun might be getting the axe.

As long as it's actually new to the genre as a whole, and not just more of the same, I'm interested.

After reading more about it, it seems like it's a disease that is spreading throughout the camp. A swine flu if you will.

If it isn't just a disease that is spreading in the came, I wonder if not everyone is infected like Jenner told Rick. The infected can live with it, but if they pass it on to a non-infected, it kills them? Maybe the infected people were exposed to something in Atlanta, but anyone not from Atlanta was not infected? I guess this is the question to be answered later.

It's definitely some type of infection. Where it came from I don't know. If you looked at the kids eyes when he died they looked really weird. Plus they also kept focusing on that walker at the fence with the messed up eyes, they gotta be related.

Yeah they're related. They showed that walker a couple of different times. That much death and rot around, some sort of new wave plague has to be spreading.

On another note, 16.1M watched the season four premiere last night. Up 30% from the season three finale. I'm sure word of mouth and things like Netflix are helping it gain steam much like Sons of Anarchy has.

Daryl could be a carrier of this new super plague since he's out handling wildlife all the time. That would explain the licking his fingers before shaking his hand infects Patrick. It could be something from a dead animal; which explains the bloody eyes on the walker.

Rick was focused in on that pig way too long. The pig seemed to actually be the "star" if you will of the episode, with them talking about it then Rick focusing in on it.

Then again that zombie with the weird eyes that was in alot of the shots in the episode that you guys mentioned. Must have seen that one half dozen times or more.

The damn official TWD twitter account is posting spoilers of the show as it happens on the east coast. I'm DVRing it so I'm not happy and I can't imagine what west coast fans are thinking.

Not sure where I read/saw it, but it in the months that take place between last season and this, it was stated that they found a prosthetic leg somewhere (on zombie?) and gave it to Herschel. We won't "see" that, however.
