this is where dhook gets his ideas from.Quote:
When I walk around at 2 a.m., nobody looks at me suspiciously, and police don’t ask me any questions. I wonder if our attackers could say the same.
Who am I to stand from my perch of privilege, surrounded by million-dollar homes and paying for a $60,000 education, to condemn these young men as “thugs?” It’s precisely this kind of “otherization” that fuels the problem.
Yeah, I have to be up for work at 5am in the morning. The whole staying out all hours of the night rioting, destroying police cars and burning shit to the ground really isn't doable on my work schedule. Maybe around Christmas. I'll have from Christmas Eve all the way through to Sunday to do some rioting and set shit on fire. Would that work for you as well? We can team up and loot some really good things, cover more ground.
LOL, Smooth!

Somebody must have gotten grounded it was quiet in here today.

Let the looting begin again!
Burn New York to the ground!

So he died because he was obese and had asthma?...sounds about right
http://youtu.be/GUzRh0U087A
Now this case in New York, this one I'm staying on the sidelines about because I haven't followed it at all, I have no clue the details behind it all. Ferguson, you had no choice but to follow it from day one because it's all the news ever talked about half the time, but this, I haven't really followed, so I'll just have to sit back and watch the discussion on this one.
The guy who filmed this was charged. With what I'm not sure but he was charged I do know
Also, just a sidenote, watching that video, has ANYBODY ever heard of turning their damn phone sideways and recording in landscape mode? :fp:
Hmm, not sure what they would have charged him with. Only thing I could think of off the top of my head would be entering a crime scene or failing to obey an officer by going to get his bike (like he was trying to do at the end of the video). Either that, or if he kept trying to get close with his phone or otherwise antagonizing the police during the follow up crime scene investigation, possibly could have gotten him for disorderly conduct or something else.
Not sure either
Medical examiner ruled his death as a homicide but said his obesity and asthma were contributing factors.
NYPD bans chokeholds and Coroner ruled the homicde by chokehold
Not sure what else there is that the video didn't show
Looked a wee bit excessive given that many cops...then the bigger one coming in at the end trying to look like he helped.
*smh*
While I will NEVER advocate looting and burning when there's injustice or perceived injustice, you really have to be a black person to really understand just how the cards are stacked against us. Yes, the American Dream is obtainable by anyone who works hard enough and yada yada and yes, black people are their own worst enemy most of the time, but "the system" really does fuck black people over consistently
Yeah, the chokehold wasn't necessary, but in the heat of the moment, the officer probably thought it his best angle to try and get the guy under control, as tall and large as that guy was. I'm over 6' and a large guy myself, but even I would have needed some kind of leverage to get that guy on the ground and handcuff him if he was resisting, I wouldn't have been able to get him under control through straight up maneuvers and strength. That's about the only justification I see for the officer going for a chokehold during the arrest, just based off of knowledge gleaned SOLELY from that video.
As for the whole thing with breaking up a fight and why the confrontation and whatnot to begin with, I'll have to do some searching and reading to find out the story of what happened. Hopefully the entire grand jury transcripts and whatnot are released like they did in Ferguson, give people a chance to read through everything.
They probably have some language in said ban that they are...unless the reasons you just described. So normal sized people can't be put into one...but big guys that 4-5 cops can't handle (although they took him down like a ton a bricks rather easily)...1 with the chokehold, the others doing I don't know what except the ole' sitting/pushing down on the side of a person pinned to the ground...head..those chokeholds aren't banned.
Guy saying he can't breathe disregards that banned chokehold as well because he's big.
If you can talk, you can breathe. Saying, "I can't breathe" requires breath.
That said, I don't know anything about that incident and I'm not drawing conclusions through what I said about talking and breathing.
I #TrustTheScript
I have NOT followed this case. However, from the articles I have read the dispute is whether the banned "choke hold" occurred.
again, i'm not privy to police techniques/procedures.Quote:
Police union officials and Pantaleo's lawyer argued that the officer used a takedown move taught by the police department, not a banned chokehold, because Garner was resisting arrest and that his poor health was the main reason he died.
Read more here: http://www.miamiherald.com/news/nati...#storylink=cpy
however, Garner was apparently under arrest for the illegal selling of cigarettes (some sort of NY tax law from what i gather). he clearly refuses to go peacefully under arrest so Pantaleo takes him down with some sort of move. Garner appears to be HUGE (much larger than any of the officers scene in the video) so a take down move would be appropriate under the circumstances (resisting arrest).
thus, the only issue is whether the officer used a "banned" "choke hold" or some other type of maneuver. if the move used was indeed previously "banned" "choke hold" then the officer should most likely have been charged with involuntary manslaughter (negligent homicide for the use of a banned procedure). however, if he used a move authorized by the police department then its likely just a "bizzarre" death caused by the apparent poor health of Garner.
Bottom Line: DO NOT RESIST ARREST FROM A POLICE OFFICER EVEN IF THE CHARGES ARE "BOGUS"
What was he being arrested for?
In the past it was for untaxed cigarettes. This had nothing to do with that other than harassment it looks like. There was no purpose for an arrest it appears other than I guess you are suppose to shut up and bend over even if you aren't in the wrong
if that's resisting arrest to provoke that response....wow.
And yeah I know about if you can talk you can breathe.
However he obviously was struggling to speak and....what do you know turns out he died from result of the chokehold..
Okay the Eric Garner decision is just outright ridiculous. Maybe Ferguson had some skepticisms but this shit was on video
http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/m...ng-of-student/
This guy should have not resisted arrest
Luckily he didn't die with obesity being a contributing factor
With you being a far right person I cannot believe you actually said this, your forefathers would be ashamed! :) ......this is really part of the problem, but I guess you won't see it as a problem until they start profiling white people all day long; which would never happen BTW so you have nothing to worry about.
I personally have been told to lay on the pavement with guns drawn only because we were "black" and one "black" person; somewhere close, had just committed a crime. I don't see how anyone in there right (pun intended) mind would think that's okay. You cannot assume we are committing a crime because we are black and just so happen to stay in an all black neighborhood and just so happen to be nearby. Contrary to popular belief we don't all know each other and we don't all do crimes.
Would you really be happy if you were simply standing outside talking to your friends and the cops pulled up and said get on the ground, only to find out later that another white person had committed a crime so we are simply searching everyone? That seems like a down right trample of one those amendments right you ( not literally; you, but I am sure if I search the forum I can find somewhere you have probably said it) so adamantly say are being taken away. I think the major argument is that cops are overreaching on how they handle people, some of them truly do have that "gun" mentality of I have one, you don't so try me.
Hell you conservatives were up in arms when you were getting patted down to rough at airports because you felt "violated", think about being "violated" often?
I am not in crowd of all "white" people are bad, or all cops are bad (personally I believe most are nice people), hell back in the day a cop pulled up on us while we were in high school, and some friends were smoking weed, all he did was take the weed and told us to go home. No handcuffs, no harassing, simply took our ID's checked us out and off we went and he was even white. I truly do understand that there are some rough neighborhoods out there, but where is the line between being a good cop and just being flat out wrong? Its a hard position to be in and an even harder question to answer.
There has to be a line drawn that says all people of color are not guilty until proven innocent no matter what there socioeconomic status is.....
But hey what do I know about anything.........I am just a 31 year old dad with no life outside of work and kids <----probably the truest statement I have made int his entire post. :D
FYI.....I think the issue is really more of a policing and profiling issue than a race one....in case you really wanna know.
In regards to Eric Garner, this has no bearing in the case. The cops knew who they were dealing with as he had been arrested 31 times since 16. This was nothing new for Garner and he should have simply let the cops do their job and live to see his family another day. Instead he did not want to be arrested, things got out of hand and we end up with an unfortunate death for selling untaxed cigarettes. The cop who used a choke-hold which was not a sanctioned use of force was in the wrong. That said when you have a such a large man resisting arrest and his flight or flight is flowing, you tend to not be running down the rulebook in your mind in an attempt to get the criminal to comply. I say that again, he was a criminal and refused to comply. Number one way to prevent cops from trying to arrest you is to not break the law. Something really simple that applies to both cases.
I have had a cop stick a gun to my head (first by pulling me off the road pointing a gun yelling at me to pull over and then once we had stopped had it nestled up to my head). All because I flipped off the wrong person (cop driving his personal car) after he sat at a green light, yapping on his cell-phone. Shit happens to white folk and the cop was also white. The only saving grace was his cop buddies, that showed up shortly after, listened to my explanation and realized the cop broke so many violations that they let me go and cooled him down.
I was nearly arrested because I fit the description of a male that was in a fight a few minutes prior 2 floors above where I was at in a mall (Dairy Queen)
Guess they thought after the fight I wanted a nice cold blizzard and apparently I had Carl Lewis's athletic ability to get such a distance in a matter of 2 minutes because I literally just walked into the mall....with my Aunt nonetheless
Luckily another officer radioed to them that they had the suspect...who looked nothing like me mind you...granted I guess when I was 12-13 I did look like a 25 year old male.
Just trying to point out that every case is different. You will always have good cops and bad cops. Black, white or brown, the best advice is to tread lightly around guys that carry a badge and do as they ask, as long as it is within their legal limits. Also do not flip off random people while driving.

Obviously he wasn't too threatening or they didn't have a reason to place him under arrest immediately...because they stood there and let him speak for a good couple of minutes.
What were they waiting for just waiting for him to get more agitated then place him under arrest.
You are making assumptions. The video shows the officers questioning him on who he was selling cigarettes to and who they saw him selling to. In return you hear Garner telling the cops to just leave him alone. When is the last time that worked with a Cop? Just leave me be, don't do your job and let me continue to break the law.
Well thank heavens Reverend Al is on the case.
It worked for my wife lol. Granted the Cops didn't find what they were looking for
Short story
About 7 years ago wife and I were having sex...TMI I know.
Apartment complex we lived in (small one...6 units in the building), all 1 bedroom. Our neighbor who told us before in the 10 words total she ever said to us in 2 years...didn't agree with interracial couples. She was older and wasn't the first time she tried to make a complaint about us.
Apparently she called police and said a child was being abused that day. We didn't have a child until 4 years ago...our first. Actually no one in the complex had any kids. 4 cops show up, 1 female and rush into our apartment. They corner me while the other 2 look for this phantom child being abused. My wife is pissed and asking smart ass questions "like is it illegal to have sex", "This is bull shit", basically apparently stuff you shouldn't say to cops according to opinions here. I'm trying to calm her down even though we are kept apart. Now my wife is 5-2..not threatening at all but if that would have been me I'd been arrested after "bull shit". Female cop then tells my wife well apparently you sound like a child when having sex. Wife grew more irate.
She also said some other things and they demanded our ID's and stayed a good bit to make sure that a child didn't show up at our house a little later. Questioned what we did for a living and some other stuff.
We weren't having outrageous sex or anything and you couldn't have heard it unless you had an ear to the wall. This same neighbor called police for a noise complaint on us that we were playing loud music...although we were actually sleep and no music was on.
She may have forgotten that there was a guy a floor above who was a DJ....common mistake though.
