The State College Police Department now has a better idea of the man they are looking for in connection with the theft of a delivery truck that later crashed.
At 1:36 a.m. on Saturday, a 1997 Chevy box truck was reported stolen from the 500 block of East Warning Avenue, police said. The keys had been left out in the open on the dashboard, police said.
Later, an officer on duty saw the truck at the 2000 E. College Ave. Sheetz, but when the officer pursued, the driver attempted to flee before crashing the truck into some trees and an electrical pole at Spring Creek, only a short distance away, police said.
The driver got out of the car and ran in the direction of Lemont, leaving a shoe in the bed of the truck, police said.
Yesterday, police received a call from an individual who said that they might have given a lift to the drive police say went on the joyride. An individual called police and said they picked up a college-aged man early Saturday morning who was described as a white, college-aged man light hair, wearing no shoes, had wet feet and minor facial injuries, police said.
The man told the driver his name was Matt, he was from Erie, and asked the driver to drop him off at the Pollock Residence Halls, police said.
Police said they could not confirm if the man's name is actually Matt, but they are in the process of identifying him via video surveillance at Sheetz and a credit card purchase he made there, if he does not turn himself in first, police said.
