I think the problem goes back to something I've observed before on Wheel of Fortune. The first guy tried it and the other contestants probably said "Well that sounded right to me" -- not realizing that what Pat said was "we can't accept that" not "that's wrong". So they probably messed themselves up and were overthinking about what the answer was.

Okay, never mind, after watching it more, they were just flubbing it.
