Someone hold CLW's hand, the Xbox One has a three-peat

http://venturebeat.com/2016/10/13/xbox-one-outsold-playstation-4-again-in-september/.

“Thanks to our fans, Xbox One was the best-selling console in September in the U.S. for the third month in a row according to NPD Group as well as the best-selling console in September in the U.K. according to GfK Entertainment UK. In addition, Xbox One was the only gen eight console to see year-over-year growth in September in the U.S., Australia, the U.K., and many other countries worldwide. This success was driven by our fans and their support for Xbox One S, which is the only console available this holiday with built-in UHD 4K Blu-ray, 4K video streaming and HDR for gaming and video. We received an incredible response to Forza Horizon 3, the No. 1 first-party title for September in the U.S., Australia, and U.K. according to NPD Group and GfK Entertainment UK. Global engagement on Xbox Live – the fastest, most reliable gaming network – continues to grow and the number of unique multiplayer users increased 57 percent year-over-year. With the blockbuster launch of Gears of War 4 for Xbox One and Windows 10 this week and the upcoming release of Clubs and Looking for Group on Xbox Live alongside the launches of Dead Rising 4, Battlefield 1, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Dishonored 2, Final Fantasy XV, Titanfall 2, and Watch Dogs 2 in the coming months, Xbox is the best place to game this holiday.”

Winning US is one thing. Winning in the UK which is Sony Country was a shocker.

Games to come when they come.

Sony built their lead partially because they were the cheaper option in the beginning. Now it's reversed. Clearly the lower prices have an impact. I know some of the deals and combos over here were over $100 cheaper than a comparable ps4. It's really annoying to me that the ps4 pro doesn't have a 4k player. I'm guessing when the Scorpion releases they may release a PRO 2.0 with it.

I don't think BC has a huge impact but there are a lot of little things like that along with maybe EA Access that tilt the game for MS.

Overall spending was down 23% over last year, according to the NPD Group. Neither the second month of the Xbox One S nor the debut of the PS4 Slim were "enough to stimulate total hardware spending."

Last week Microsoft announced its Xbox One was the top-selling console for September 2016, its third consecutive month at the top of the charts.

Here's the top 10 list of best selling games for North America:

NBA 2K17
Madden NFL 17
FIFA 17
NHL 17
Bioshock: The Collection
Destiny: The Collection
Grand Theft Auto V
Overwatch
Forza Horizon 3
Call of Duty: Black Ops III

The NPD Group said Xbox One sales accounted for 37% of all hardware units sold in the month.

Nintendo's 3DS was up 40% year over year, according to a statement from Nintendo. Its 2DS was a major contributor to those numbers, with sales up 110% over September of last year. According to NPD this was the fourth consecutive month in which 3DS sales increased over the same period last year.

Hardware:

XB1: #1 Console

Notes:
- “Unit sales for the Xbox One brand of hardware grew by 8 percent compared to last October,” said Naji. “Average pricing for the Xbox One hardware fell by 17 percent due primarily to the release of the lower-priced 500GB Xbox One S Minecraft Bundle.”
- “The 3DS experienced its fifth straight month of year-on-year growth,” said Naji. “Both unit sales and consumer spending for October grew 12 percent as average pricing was flat year on year. It is likely that continued consumer interest in the Pokémon franchise and Monster Hunter: Generations has driven this growth.”
- “The PS4 Slim 500 GB Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End bundle was the month’s best-selling hardware across the category, accounting for 17 percent of total hardware units sold in the month,” said Naji. [Note: As an individual SKU. Xbox Ones sold more overall, but split between more bundles.]

DECEMBER 2017

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps4-tops-january-2017-us-sales/1100-6447726/

The PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console in the United States during January 2017, according to the NPD Group, which tracks sales domestically.

Sony's console was also the No. 1 console in the US during December, though the Xbox One ended the year as the best-selling console for the second half of 2016.

In its own statement, Microsoft said 2017 is off to a "strong start" for the Xbox One as the number of hours players spent playing games on the console grew 21 percent year-over-year. Additionally, Xbox One sales grew year-over-year in January, something that cannot be said for the PS4, according to Microsoft.

A week from today, the NPD Group will announce the top-selling games for January 2017. We'll report back with more details as they become available.

Sony is not giving a breakdown of how many were sold, they just say it is selling better than the Slim. (http://segmentnext.com/2017/02/03/ps4-pro-sales/)

Sony’s CFO Kenichiro Yoshida told investors during his briefing that PS4 Pro sales were actually a bit better than the company had expected.

PS4 Pro is running as we had expected, as we assumed, but Pro maybe is doing more than we anticipated

Given the recent launch of PSVR, it is understandable to see PS4 Pro performing well since the performance boost it offers does help VR games and delivers players a smoother experience compared to the normal PS4.

Yoshida also mentioned that PS4 Pro sales were actually better than PS4 Slim, which was launched only a few months prior to PS4 Pro.

Seems hard to believe the much more expensive Pro compared to discounted Slims with games included outsold a Slim. Maybe that means no bundles for the Pro for awhile.

NPD March Hardware is in. Not a shocker but it goes Switch, PS4, XB1.

Nintendo Switch, the new home gaming system that people can also take on the go, has sold faster in its launch month than any other video game system in Nintendo history. The Nintendo Switch system sold more than 906,000 units in March, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. That makes Nintendo Switch one of the fastest-selling video game systems of all time. Notably, this sales surge was accomplished in a nontraditional month for a console launch.

The Nintendo Switch system sold more than 906,000 units in March, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game sold over 1.3 million units*. That total includes more than 925,000 units sold for Nintendo Switch and nearly 460,000 units sold for the Wii U console.

That number is correct. More copies of Zelda on the Switch were sold than the hardware itself. Yeah, the game is really that good.

March 2017

Software:

1. Tom Clancy's Ghost Record: Wildlands ** (Ubisoft) - Best Ghost Recon debut ever, #2 Tom Clancy title debut behind The Division.
2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild * (Nintendo) - Over 900K physical on Switch. However, keep in mind that these are ranked by dollar sales, not units, and that this spot represents Switch + Wii U.
3. Mass Effect: Andromeda ** (Electronic Arts) - Second best Mass Effect debut ever, after Mass Effect 3 (which sold 1.3 million in its first month).
4. Horizon: Zero Dawn * (Sony) - Best Guerrilla debut ever, selling twice as much as their second highest debut, Killzone 2. That should put it around 648K.
5. MLB 17: The Show * (Sony)
6. Grand Theft Auto V ** (Take-Two)
7. For Honor ** (Ubisoft)
8. NBA 2K17 (Take-Two)
9. Nier: Automata (Square Enix)
10. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (Activision Blizzard)
11. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 = 4.0 Remix (Square Enix)
12. Battlefield 1 ** (Electronic Arts)
13. 1-2 Switch * (Nintendo) - 19% attach rate to the Switch.
14. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (Capcom)
15. Overwatch ** (Activision Blizzard)
16. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege ** (Ubisoft)
17. Super Bomberman R * (Konami)
18. FIFA 17 ** (Electronic Arts)
19. Lego Worlds (Warner Bros)
20. Madden NFL 17 (Electronic Arts)

* No Digital Sales
** No Origin, Battle.net, uPlay, or non-Steam sales

Notes:
- Ghost Recon: Wildlands is the best ever Ghost Recon launch, and second best Tom Clancy launch after The Division.
- In reference to franchises: "Zelda is the top-selling property of all time within the Adventure super genre, selling 54 percent more revenue than the next best-selling franchise, Resident Evil."
- "Switch's packaged software sold 1.3m units, a record high for a Nintendo platform launch."
- Mass Effect: Andromeda had the second best launch behind Mass Effect 3.
- Horizon was the best Guerrilla debut ever, selling twice as much as their second best debut, Killzone 2.
- 1-2 Switch made the top 20 best-selling games chart with an attach rate of 19 percent.
- Starting next month, Microsoft's digital sales will be reflected in the software charts.
- We'll get a full year to date chart soon, but Ghost Recon is #1 for the year, For Honor is #2, and Zelda is #3 combining Switch and Wii U versions.

According to NPD, March "will go down in history books as the month Nintendo broke records." Switch was Nintendo's biggest-ever hardware launch, and "the second biggest launch for any video game platform" since NPD began tracking numbers.

Breath of the Wild came in at second place in spite of digital sales not being accounted for in NPDs tally. Similarly, Horizon Zero Dawn and MLB 17: The Show had strong showings on the top 10 list without accounting for digital sales.

Last week, Nintendo revealed it sold 906,000 Switch consoles in the first 28 days of the console's release, and sold 925,000 copies of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Switch during the same period, giving it the highest attach rate for "any non-bundled title" on new hardware since NPD began tracking in 1995.

Wow. For Honor has more sales in 2017 than Horizon Zero Dawn and 2 overall. That is a bit odd considering VGChartz has them around 1.6M vs HZD at 2.6M. MEA is closer to 1.3 or so.

Just a reminder about VGChartz (from the wiki page on VGChartz)

Sales figures on VGChartz are based on estimates extrapolated from small retail samples. While offering some information about their methodology through their website, VGChartz does not publish any sources on how they get their data. Some sites, including Gamasutra and Wired News, have questioned the reliability of the information presented by the site. VGChartz has defended the credibility and reliability of its sales data, often comparing their numbers with the ones published by NPD Group although some charts have been retroactively adjusted to better match NPD's monthly reports.

Yeah, I figured VGChartz could be off but that is a big discrepancy.

A lot of people on For Honor have the season pass too. About 1/3 of the characters are the two new ones in Dominion right now and you have to have season pass the first week to use them.

It's NBA 2K17's world, you are just living it. Remember when Madden used to outsell the basketball games combined. Now Madden is not even the top selling sports game in the US. EA Sports is slowly digging its own grave. Madden 18 shows almost nothing to get excited for, that you can't get from watching Friday Night Lights reruns. No golf or tennis games. No college games. No Baseball. They have Hockey but it never charts well. NBA Live 18... I have said all I will on that. They are but a shell of their former self. Basically FIFA and to an extent Madden keep the wheels churning and the lights on.

Notes:
- “Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy had a strong debut, reaching number 4 on the month’s top-seller chart despite having only two days in market,” said Piscatella. “Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy is the first Crash Bandicoot franchise game to debut in the top 5 since Crash Bandicoot: Warped, which launched on the Sony PlayStation in November 1998.”
- The other exclusive was Arms for the Switch. What’s especially impressive here is that it sold that well without including any digital sales. Nintendo separately confirmed that its wacky fighter surpassed 256,000 copies sold physically and digitally in June. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe and Zelda: Breath of the Wild sold 180,000 and 145,000 during that same period, respectively.
- "It’s worth noting that Prey, which debuted in May, has completely fallen off the sales charts. That’s not just the overall sales chart, it didn’t even crack the top 10 on Xbox One- or PS4-only lists, which you can see below."

Hardware:

PS4: #1

Notes:
- The PlayStation 4 was June’s best-selling hardware platform, driven by the Slim PlayStation 4 system in Gold with 1TB HDD,” said Piscatella. “It was the best performing June for PlayStation 4 unit sales to date.”
- “Year to date, hardware spending has grown 19 percent versus 2016 to $1.4 billion,” said Piscatella. “The Nintendo Switch has been the catalyst for year-to-date growth. But portable hardware spending continues to decline. Year-to-date, spending on portable hardware has fallen 40 percent.”

Notes:
- "The launch of Splatoon 2 on the Nintendo Switch, and month 2 sales of Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy drove software gains"
- “Nintendo’s Splatoon 2 was the best-selling title of the month,” said Piscatella. “Three of the month’s top seven best-selling games are published by Nintendo. Nintendo was also the best-selling software publisher in July.”
- In June, Tekken 7 and Injustice 2 fought their way to the top of charts. Since then, Tekken 7 has cratered from its No. 1 position to No. 20. Injustice 2 is still in the top 10
- Though Horizon Zero Dawn has slipped off the overall charts, Piscatella says that it contributed to a resurgence of role-playing games. Along with titles like Nier: Automata, Persona 5, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, the RPG year-to-date sales have grown over 50 percent year-over-year.

Hardware:

Nintendo Switch: #1

Notes:
- “The Nintendo Switch was July’s best-selling hardware platform,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. “[That was] driven by new inventory released in support of the launch of Splatoon 2.”
- "New supply of Nintendo Switch and continued strength of PlayStation 4 pushed hardware higher."
- “Year to date, hardware spending has grown 20 percent versus 2016 to $1.6 billion,” Mat Piscatella said. “Performance of the Nintendo Switch continues to be the primary cause of the year-on-year gains.”
- Of course, none of this means folks have forgot about the PS4. That system doesn’t have supply problems, and Sony has built up an impressive lineup of games for it this year. That has led to it outselling all other hardware platforms year-to-date, according to Piscatella.

At this rate I am more interested to see if the new NBA Live game can outsell NBA 2K17.
Nintendo wining Hardware and Software. To CLW's chagrin, saying it would be a failure.
Will we ever see another GTA again? Why invest in a new game when the old one just keeps printing out money.

We'll see GTA VI eventually, but I agree, with as much money as they continue to make with GTA Online, they aren't going to be in any rush to bring VI to market.

And honestly, I'm alright with that. I still enjoy the hell out of the single player story in GTA V. Every single year, since it first released back on the 360/PS3, every year in September, I start a brand new campaign all over again in GTA V just because I enjoy the story and have fun playing it. I actually was sort of itching tonight for GTA V, but I'm gonna wait until my usual mid-September play through, give me time to finish Horizon Zero Dawn first, and also make my initial steps into Andromeda.

GTA V is now the best selling game of all time.

http://www.usgamer.net/articles/npd-grand-theft-auto-v-is-the-best-selling-game-of-all-time

Grand Theft Auto V is now the best selling game of all-time in terms of revenue and tracked unit sales. That's according to the NPD Group's August analysis for video game sales in 2017. Not only is that incredibly impressive, but it proves just how strong GTAV is almost four years after the game initially came out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles.

According to the NPD Group's monthly sales reports, Grand Theft Auto V was the second best selling game in the month of August, behind Madden NFL 18. But it's important to know that Madden 18 came out that month, while GTA V's been on the market since 2013 in one form or another.*GTA Online*in particular has proven to be a huge boon for the comapny. It should be noted that digital sales for games like PUBG aren't accounted for in the NPD Group's listings.

Grand Theft Auto V beat other new titles that month too including Uncharted: The Lost Legacy which also came out that month to third place.

"Grand Theft Auto V has now been on the market 49 months and has achieved 41 Top 10 chart appearances, 16 more times than any other single title in reported history," wrote NPD's Mat Piscatella. "In addition, Grand Theft Auto V is the all-time best-selling game by both revenue and units in tracked sales across PC, console, and portable with digital and packaged combined."

Live is good but so bare bones. A sports game with no roster editing in 2017 is inexcusable. Plus going against a beast in 2K18.

I was looking for numbers a week or so ago and saw that NBA 2K sales (no numbers) exceeded their expectations which has to mean monster numbers.

Software

Dollar sales of Console, Portable and PC Games Software combined to reach $474 million in October 2017, down 20 percent versus a year ago, due to a difficult October 2016 comparable which featured the launch of Battlefield 1. Year to date, consumer spending is up 3 percent to $4.2 billion.

Sales grew over 20 percent when compared to the launch month of the previous release in the franchise, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, which debuted in September 2014.

Super Mario Odyssey debuted at #3 on the all platforms chart, while taking the top spot for Nintendo Switch. Super Mario Odyssey drove the third highest launch month packaged software sales for a Mario Action/Adventure title in tracked history, following only New Super Mario Bros Wii and Super Mario Galaxy.

Ubisoft was the best-selling publisher of October 2017. Activison Blizzard remains the top selling publisher year to date.

Year to date, hardware spending has grown 19 percent versus 2016 to $2.3 billion. Consumer spending on Nintendo Switch, Plug N Play devices such as the SNES Classic and the PlayStation 4 continue to provide growth.

Accessories

NBA 2K18 which ships a month after Madden 18, is the top selling sports game this year.

NBA 2K18 and NBA 2K17 both outsold Madden 18 over the past 12 months.

This once again proves my point that NBA Live 18 was a waste of money and they should try and make a freaking college basketball game. NCAA Basketball 2019!

SmoothPancakes

Not a chance in hell. They won't even attempt to revive NCAA Football and that sold FAR better than NCAA Basketball ever did.

Plus the whole student athletes and likenesses and etc that destroyed NCAA Football will still be there to destroy NCAA Basketball.

Yeah, NCAA basketball never sold well. 2K got out because of profit numbers, not license. EA should be making MVP again. That game sold over 2million copies on PS2. With no competition on XBOX they could sell a million total copies easy. People would come back. Has to be better than selling 50,000 Live copies which is now on sale for $15 on MS for XBox. They can’t even get 5% of the market.

Toes are being dipped in the water. A few college teams in the past few NBA 2K game. College teams in Madden 18 side show. Where are the lawsuits for player likeness? If you randomize the players, they can't sue.

SmoothPancakes
11-16-2017, 11:23 PM
Call me when they get beyond just a couple teams of randomly generated players. When they start adding entire conferences, maybe I'll start taking interest.

And as for college basketball, regardless, it's dead. It's a nice novelty for NBA Live or 2K or whatever other NBA games, but both 2K and EA completely dropped college basketball back in 2010, long before any lawsuit talk even started. It never sold on the level of NCAA Football and would just be a money loser today.

This article from February 2010 is just as accurate today as it was almost 8 years ago.

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-slow-decline-of-college-basketball-games/1100-6249963/

Plus, yeah, a COMBINED 155,000 sales across all systems for NCAA Basketball 10? EA would never take that chance, especially with their struggles just to sell NBA Live. And 2K rakes in money hand over fist with NBA 2K, so they aren't going to bother with a college game when they already have their basketball cash cow.

The NCAA ? is REALLY simple:

(1) Will the NCAA permit EA/2K/whoever to "compensate" the players for use of their likeness? - It could be as simple as a copy of a free game and if a player says no they won't be in the game. If yes then you could easily make a NCAA sports game.

If No

(2) The big schools leave the NCAA and form their own league and allow for #1.
