Neogaf has the details since the story is behind a paywall.

Sony Corp. plans to introduce a new PlayStation 4 standard model alongside a high-end version next month, people familiar with the matter said, in an effort to maintain demand for the best-selling videogame console.

With the release of the two models, Sony hopes to attract hard-core fans and more casual users to its videogame platform, analysts said. The company has been trying to build a community of users so that it can earn consistent revenue from subscriptions and software downloads.

Sony has said that it would hold a news conference at the PlayStation Theater in New York on Sept. 7. A Sony spokesman said the company would talk about the PlayStation 4 business at the news conference.

Sony said in June that it planned to introduce a high-end version of PlayStation 4 with enhanced graphics capabilities, but it hasn’t publicly discussed plans to refresh its standard model.

Cutting the production of OG PS4

Ahead of the September news conference, Sony has cut production of PlayStation 4 to adjust inventory, people familiar with the matter said. Several major e-commerce websites in Japan, including Sony’s own e-commerce site, said the PlayStation 4 was out of stock.

PlayStation 4 sales have been weaker in Japan than in the U.S. Data from videogame magazine publisher Famitsu showed sales of the console in Japan have been declining slightly in recent weeks. Nevertheless, stocks of the device are likely to run out as the company limits production.

“The white model was gone two weeks ago and we just sold our last black model in stock,” said the chief of the videogame floor at a major electronics store in Tokyo. “Our central purchasing department warned us we wouldn’t get any for now because the item is simply not in distribution channels.”

If that is the "slim" they went very minimalist on design. More like PS4 "vertically challenged." Really looks like someone went crazy with the 3D printer again. Hard to say since the WSJ has confirmed there will be a new standard model coming and they have stopped the production of the original.

Today was the first day I heard about the slim. They kept that a big secret. Heard a price drop is coming too.

The Neo won't be able to play 4K blu ray discs though will it? Just streaming?

No HDR or 4K but has a new light bar (did anyone on this planet as for this?).

Sony still refuses to acknowledge it's existence but here is an unboxing and a review. Yes, an actual review of a product that Sony has yet to confirm exists.

I did read about that tweak to the controllers. Do you think the Neo will come out soon?

September 7th is when Sony is supposed to spill the beans on the Neo and apparently the Slim, though they might want to just release that PR now. Rumors have the Neo coming out as early as October, when the PSVR is released. We should know in a week.

Now I know what I am getting for Christmas. A big ass generator to deal with the "up to 310W" if I decide to buy a PS4 Pro. ;)

For comparison (while playing)

112 watts for the Xbox One, 137 watts for the PlayStation 4, and 34 watts for the Wii U

4K streaming yes but it will not have a 4K player built in.

So $299 for the slim. Is that the same price? Hard to tell with the exchange difference. Nice to see PS4 PRO (I prefer ps4k) out this year. An extra $100 isn't too bad. That thing is probably $550 over here.

With so many streaming things for 4k and no 4k player I'm not sure how valuable that part is but if games are produced in 4k that would be cool. I'd like to read impressions on it.

Roughly the same price. The slim is 500GB. The current PS4 500GB model is $349 but is bundled with a game.

What is upsetting most people is that the Xbox One S (which can be bought for $299.99) includes a 4K-Blu Ray player. The specs are also a little underwhelming based on what the Xbox Scorpio has planned.

What? I didn't realize the One S actually had a 4k blu ray player. I just picked up a 4k TV. I'd love to see a 4k movie soon. The One S can't do games though in 4k. That is reserved for Scorpio I believe. That's disappointing Sony didn't include one.

EB games Canada is listing ps4 pro at $499 over here which is nicer. The current model is still $429 when you can buy a basic One for $299 with a game on sale right now. Huge gap. Too big imo.

I don't see me picking up any new console soon though. Things can change as it would be nice to have a second one for myself as my kids are on it all the time. Some of my sons friends are big xbox people.

Don't get the 4k need until it is a mainstay in development and television. Maybe I'm getting old.

JB, almost all of the larger tvs are made with 4k now. There are still cheaper panels but the price of 4k has dropped and honestly I think every single new TV will have it in a year or so. It's really close to mainstream in production. The lack of content is definitely slowing it. The Blue Jays are broadcast in 4k but only on a cable network I can't get. I don't think 4k is going to work via satellite. I think streaming and fibre optic services will explode with this stuff.
