There was a map leaked which leads people to believe this will be a prequel coming up...

Why fans are excited about this leaked Red Dead Redemption 2 map (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-04-18-why-fans-are-excited-about-this-leaked-red-dead-redemption-2-map)

Wild West follow-up will have larger world, set as a prequel.

It's been independently confirmed that is the actual map for RDR 2, and also confirmed that RDR 2 will be a prequel, set before Redemption.

I'm itching to pull out and dust off Redemption for the first time in probably two years.

I finally finished the backward compatible Red Dead last night. It was an enjoyable game with a great story. That being said, I despise the final mission with Marston.

He was such a likable character but killing him off that way just sucks. Plus the ending was so drawn out with all the ranch activities. While it was poetic justice that his son gets revenge, the ending itself seemed very empty to me.

If you completely tune out the back story, he was just a sweetie. The ending, John's death was pretty good and fit the narrative perfectly. It was a final Redemption, he knew they only way to save his wife and son was to die. You do have a strange thing for calling questionable-at-best characters, likable. Forget who the last one was but I am sure you could find some redeeming qualities in Gannon. He was just misunderstood by Link and Zelda. His desire to to conquer Hyrule was simply to put in place a system of Government that gave Hyrule free heath care and cookies.

Marston IS likable because he knows exactly what he is and what he has done. For an "evil" character his dialogue is deep and purposeful and he provides a fair insight on the ills of society. Marston isn't a GOOD person and what he does doesn't make up for his crimes but it's easy to have empathy for him throughout the story. Of course it also depends on how you "PLAY" his role but I maxed out his honour ratings.

Rockstar describes the game as "the story of outlaw Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang as they rob, fight and steal their way across the vast and rugged heart of America in order to survive."

The Van der Linde gang is also known as Dutch's Gang, which the last game's protagonist, John Marston would eventually join (and leave).

Now we get to play a really bad guy. Except for Jaymo who will refuse to use a gun or knife in an attempt to make him a lovable character.

That would be a tad awkward, since we already played as Marston and know how his future ends up. Their story has been told. It would be like playing as Dutch van der Linde, etc, hence the creation of Arthur, whose future we do not have any insight into. I am more interested to see if Abigail Marston makes an appearance since the game is focused on the gang. She was a prostitute during that time that rode with and slept with all the members of the gang. That would make for an interesting dynamic as we have only seen Abigail the wife and mother. John fell in love but there is always jealousy and betrayal in situations like this. I hope that we see John Marston in the game but not as a playable character, though it would be great to have him join in a shootout or for some cards.

GameInformer
https://www.gameinformer.com/preview/2018/09/20/the-biggest-takeaways-from-our-red-dead-redemption-ii-hands-on-demo

Breakdown from Resetera poster.

- Has 1st person mode.
- Customisable HUD.
- Each character will have different sets of clothes to coincide with weather conditions.
- Clothing customisations go as far as allowing layering and minor adjustments, like the option to roll up your sleeves.
- You can physically see all your weapons on Arthur's character model--you can hold only hold two sidearms and two long weapons (along with a knife, lasso, and throwables).
- Like the first game you have a range of choices, and your decision affects your honor meter.
- It's possible to shoot weapons out of enemy hands
- Dead Eye now has 5 levels, Level 1 allows for slowdown, Level 2 allows you to paint targets and unleash a barrage of shots, and Level 3 allows you to manually pick your shooting points, etc.
- Gun customisation, such as engravings.
- Beard grows over time, but you can shave.
- You get hungry over time, but you can get fat if you eat too much, effecting stamina.
- Stats like stamina can be raised by doing physical activities (such as in GTA V or Bethesda RPG's).
- When hunting, you can sell the carcass or take it to the butchers for meat. If you leave it too long, it'll rot.
- Your camp will not wait for you. Members of your gang who reside at camp will come and go, and finding out where exactly they've gone from others will be the basis of a number of quests and side quests.
- You can name your horse.

Yes, First person mode is what I need.

Honor is deeply integrated into the game, and works in the background to influence interactions with the world and its characters from moment to moment. While Arthur is an unrepentant outlaw, you still get to decide what kind of outlaw he is. Arthur’s honor will change based on the choices made in his daily activities, and varying levels of honor will have different consequences and opportunities – not all of them immediately obvious.

For example, if playing as a more dishonorable character, the world will respond to you differently - robberies will pay more, it will be easier to intimidate witnesses and kill shots will be more intense.

If playing honorably, bounty hunting jobs will pay more, and kill shots will be more heroic.

Your honor will subtly shift back and forth based on the choices you make as you play.

79 AMAZING LITTLE DETAILS IN RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2

I was told that horses come in various breeds, and that you can bond with them and learn new skills, like a dramatic skid-stop or a dressage side-step. After seeing the game’s first trailer, we and others had wondered if the horse’s testicles were animated. I asked, and they told me that the testicles shrink and expand depending on the temperature in the game world. Details, details.

I'm getting the Pro next Friday and installing a 1 TB external. I'm actually removing the 1 TB I had put in my OG PS4 and re-installing the 500 GB one. I have an external drive case I will slip the 1 TB into and just use it for that purpose.

It's funny. I never thought 1 TB wouldn't be enough space. But with myself, two kids and their PSVR games, I can't put any and every game I want on the system. 2 TB gives a lot more breathing room, especially since 100 GB is just taken up by the system.

SmoothPancakes
10-18-2018, 12:50 PM
I'm so happy I spent the extra money and got a 4 TB external drive a year or two ago. I'll have to go and count how many games I actually have installed on that thing currently, but it is without a doubt well over 50. May even be approaching 100 at this point between the PS+ freebies and new games released this year as well as the crap ton of games I've bought this past year during various Flash Sales and other weekly sales. And last I looked, I still had over 1 or 1.5 TB of space free.

bdoughty
10-19-2018, 05:39 PM
So far so good. Ended up only being 88gb so far. Let it download while I slept and it is ready to go. I am sure there will be a patch before the game releases that will require another chunk.

Disc buyers get it on 2 discs. One installs most of the date, second one is the play disc. So you only ever have to load one, due to stuff being installed on the HD.

SmoothPancakes
10-19-2018, 11:35 PM
I'll have to check my PS4. It probably still needs to be downloaded and installed since I haven't been online at all since probably mid to late September. Just no time or desire to really spend time online. Between work and having started working out at a new gym in town since September 12th, I'm usually worn out most evenings and spend most of the time laying on the couch and reading or screwing around with a couple games on my phone.

I'm definitely planning a very late Thursday night/Friday morning next week when this baby releases.

Game is getting amazing reviews but there is one review, which does not contain a score, that is one of the best reviews of a video game I have read. Seriously, and I hate Kotaku for it's overbearing social warrioring for almost everything under the sun (The crunch and a few other whinny bits are in the review but I was expecting that based on the author). There is also a really good video on the atmosphere somewhere in the middle of the article. The end credits take 34 minutes to watch, that alone is pretty mind-blowing at all the people involved in this game.

https://kotaku.com/red-dead-redemption-2-the-kotaku-review-1829984369

97 on Metacritic so far. Wow!

97 on PS4 and 98 on Xbox ;) Among both there are only 3 reviews under 90.

The lowest was 70 and they are the same people that gave Far Cry 5 a 5 out of 10 and spent the last few paragraphs moaning about how a Western based game does not delve far enough into into the politics of slavery, women's rights, etc.

The myth of society, the inherent cruelty of people, the hypocrisy of treating predatory capitalists as a more civilized class—every warmed-over western theme is presented here without an ounce of subtlety and conveyed in the broadest possible strokes. Questioning the myth of the western is, at this point, almost as old as the base mythologizing that the genre did for so long, which leaves nothing unique to the game’s genre introspection. Red Dead Redemption 2 is the most ambitious game Rockstar has put out, in how it wants to be about something as much as the scope of its open world, but its aspirations don’t go much further than transplanting the themes of better westerns into an incredibly long video game, where you don’t ruminate on those themes so much as bump into them every once in a while on a mission.

This whole Western 101 approach unsurprisingly comes with a ham-fisted grasp of politics. A woman eventually puts on a pair of pants, one character explains white privilege and why the people in the “southern” end of the map look at him funny, another says that Native Americans were—in what is at least acknowledged as being grossly reductive—“treated poorly,” and everyone generally contemplates the horrors of racism and the aftermath of slavery. And for hours upon hours, none of this injustice is explored in any real detail.

These detours into attempted social consciousness suffer from a similarly ridiculous into-the-camera bluntness before they’re pushed to the fringes of the larger story. It often feels as if Red Dead Redemption 2 is merely parroting what’s expected to be said when portraying such things, to show that the game at least recognizes what it’s portraying, so that it may sufficiently get away with rendering a town where the black folks live on the outskirts or having one character accuse another of fucking slaves. Prejudice is given no more focus than as period-appropriate flavor, a patronizing tourism meant most of all to inform the myth of the white outlaw in a hypocritical society; at one point, Arthur makes a laughable statement to some Native American characters that goes something like, “The government don’t like me any more than they like you, and like you, my time here is nearly finished.” After all, if the white outlaw can no longer be free, then who truly is?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mTIPXwcDGQ

Key notes:

* XBX runs in native 4K
* PS4 Pro 1920 x 2160
* XBX best performance with a few drops in towns
* PS4 Pro next best thing with solid framerate in wilderness but again dropping some frames in towns.
* PS4/XB One have better overall performance than RDR1 had in 360/ps3 hardware. There are drops even to the low-mid 20s at some points though.
* Visual parity in terms of rendering for all versions. (same assets/foliage etc)
* PS4 1080p
* XB One 864p
* No evidence of dynamic resolution in any of the versions tested.
* DF consider the game a stunning achievement regardless and believe the XBX X version is the best and by a considerable margin.

Native 4K and the best performance. Behold the power of the X. Though it still looks amazing on all the other consoles. Was not really shocked the Xbox One could not even hit 1080p.

I feel like the excerpt of the review you posted used a lot of long, smart-sounding buzzwords, but didn't actually say anything of relevance. :D

What stands out to me in reviews have been the 50 hour main story (about what I expected) and some people thinking the game starts slow. Even with that, I'm still looking forward to getting the game down the line.

Has anyone heard an estimate on how long it would take to do all current side missions as well. I'm assuming that might triple the time.

As an example with fishing. There are 200 different types of fish to catch. Some more easily found than others. That alone could take 20+ hours if someone really enjoyed fishing. If you like the hunting, collecting, etc. Easily a hundred hours+ in the singleplayer alone. Remember that most reviewers were rushing through the game to get a review out. Even rushing it took 50 hours and they barely touched the side stuff. Every NPC can be talked to and there are stories/side quests you might not see if you never talk to them.

Also there are comparison shots by Digital Foundry. Scroll down to the Launch Coomparison Tool. You can move the images around in the comparison or see the whole image by selecting the consoles. PS4 Pro owners are going to be a bit dissapointed. There are a couple where the PS4 looks as good, if not better than the Pro.

Played for around four hours and we made it out of the snow and to the first real base camp. It is a bit slow paced during this period but does so to get you into the story and the mechanics of the game. Game runs smooth as butter and is just stunning. My only complaint is the controls are typical Rockstar controls. Player movement can be awkward and picking up items is a bit more clumsy than it needs to be. Also it is hard to see which button you need to press (on screen prompts) since everything is in white and they should have used color face buttons in it's place or at least an option. It also hurts during dialog early on as you have to trigger onto a person and select the proper button to talk, subdue, incite, etc. Over time it should be fine but could have been handled much better. Shooting is real good so far but I have not had an issue with that since the early GTA games when it was awful. Horse riding is great, one of things I loved about RDR. Once you get out of the snow you do get hit with the need to start looking after yourself and your horse. I enjoy the micromanaging ad look forward to it. Went from a Cold to Warm area, so I need to get some lighter clothes as it impacts your health with being too hot or cold.

Yeah I just made it out to the 1st base camp and I agree its really pretty but the controls are quite clunky (especially trying to pick up items when there are multiple items near) shooting also is frustrating. I've also got to get used to all the "sim" aspects of the game.

Absolutely. We ordered it for $50 instead of the normal $80 over here. Amazon normally had crazy good sales during e3 except this year nothing. You can’t even pre order most new games anymore. They kind of suck for games now.

I wish the game let you save mid-mission. You have to complete it - it locks out manual saves. Sometimes I want to just squeeze in 15 minutes.

As far as HDR goes, my LG unit is not good with it. Upon further reviews it is a cheap set (I can live with this) but the gaming mode kills HDR. Great for input lag and necessary but HDR with the gaming mode washes out things. Looks ugly. 65" LG UJ6300 model. With HDR off - very nice. I would still say the Pro is a minor upgrade but a nice one still.

You know what this game needs more of? More drinking with Lenny. A rare gem of a sidequest. Also there appears to be a serial killer on the loose. Love when games toss these in. I am taking my sweet time with this game but story barriers are preventing me from profiting on some of my finds. Came across some really good treasure just hunting around all the little areas around Valentine. Unfortunately there is no fence to sell to there and I have a bunch of Jewelry, Gold bars and other things that can't be sold.

Though I did finally run the quest that explains why you need to donate to gang cash box. Yes, it does serve a very good purpose and is not a waste of money. Really do no need to jump in the story more but just travelling around Valentine has been a blast.

Still not thrilled with some of the controls and playing around with them. I love first person games but this did not work for me and third person just feels better. When I have to go to the internet to decode what heck (up arrow/down arrow and LB) to flipping drop a weapon to pick up a new one, someone done goofed. How on earth does that equate to TAP LB? Just say tap LB. Tappity Tap Tap Tap LB.

Pause. Choose player from the menu and you will see all your stats and your horse. Honestly if you just eat some meat and biscuits each time you play it's not an issue. Clean your guns once a week and keep your horse brushed or run him through a river. It's not that bad and could be far more demanding.

As for a guide IGN has pretty much anything you need on their wiki.

Finally found a fence and like a dumbass accidentally sold him some of those collectable cards you find. I hope he still has them because selling them counts against your collection. Made it to chapter 3 and 25% completion of the story. Having an absolute blast but really wish people would stop killing my horses. They kill the horse and you die too, horse is gone forever. Miss my Thoroughbred Jess, as she was fast as lightning. Had the tonics to revive her but got killed trying to save her.

A little tip I found for dealing with high bounties that you do not want to pay off because you are low on funds.

Take whatever money you have and donate to camp. Go to the Sheriffs Office where the bounty is. L Trigger the Sheriff and select Antagonize. Make sure you do not have a gun in hand. Then when he pulls a gun on you L Trigger him and choose Surrender. You go to jail, lose the bounty and they collect squat.

It is a running joke that John can't swim. Arthur on the other hand can but buyer beware, he can't swim very far. There were some islands near your camp in chapter 3 and I decided to swim to them. Well worth the trip as I found a bunch of new animals, plants and some treasure but you need to find the shortest route between to make your way around the islands. I learned the hard way as I took a long way back to the mainland. Arthur can't use items even while wading in the water. Apparently horses can swim better but did not try that. Also bought the boat for the camp but was too far to use it when I decided to go on this little adventure. Guess John got the last laugh.

Only 39% of the story as I find myself just hunting and fishing.

Edit: Speaking of details this one just happened to me. While hunting someone was taking a piss and as I walked by he stopped and zipped up and when I was far enough away he started pissing again. So many of these little details in the game.

I’ve enjoyed my time with the game. I don’t change clothes, have bought virtually nothing other than camp upgrades, have crafted nothing, don’t do chores around camp and try to avoid doing any thing I consider tedious. I largely stick to missions and have had fun. The open world is good. Things are really alive more than other open world/sandbox games I have played.

That said, this game isn’t GOTY material imo. I’d still give it a solid 8.5. I like it more than Spiderman but not as much as GOW or Detroit. I prefer games with a stronger story. I do prefer linear games over open world. I’m in chapter 3 and even though I have played roughly 25+ hours (I wish it would track it for us) there is no story whatsoever. We leave Blackwater and Dutch did something questionable. That’s all I know. Ever since then I have done nothing but collect money, rob people or other basic missions. These ARE fun but are starting to feel pointless. When I hear people talking about doing side missions vs main missions there are no differences so far. I honestly don’t know what the point of this game is other than shooting and robbing people. Again, that’s fun but I’m finding the urge to play other games pull at me now. There is nothing special about the combat or anything. This is just a very detailed and real open world game that people who love to just screw around can enjoy but I wish there was more of a point.

I've gotten most of northern West Elizabeth other than Blackwater, which I found out marshals basically spawn and start trying to kill you within seconds of crossing the river into the dead or alive zone around Blackwater. I've still got a lot more to go though.

Have met some interesting strangers during my adventures though. I ran into the brother and sister at the pig farm. I was expecting that to go a lot worse, and a lot more violating, than just being knocked out, robbed of all my money and dumped in a grave down the road.

For Jaymo since he has finished the story or anyone else that has.

You were right about chapter 5, 6 and the Epilogues taking forever. Just left the ranch from Epilogue one and still have a ways to go. There was some serious fluff in there. The pacing, especially the Indian story sections were so slow. Also they just would not shut up with the same bickering between Arthur and Dutch. I knew how the story was to end going in. The funny thing is that once I did contract tuberculosis, I stopped wanting to do any of the side stuff. It was kind of genius on Rockstars end. They made it near impossible to gain weight, so hunting for food felt like a waste. Find new animals? Nah, going to die soon. Upgrade stuff by hunting? No, but to be fair you are really overpowered by end game as it is. Always coughing and pale as a ghost. I got my achievement for creating a completely evil Arthur, only to end up right in the middle because I sided with the story into doing going things with my money. Had, plenty and can't take it with me.

Now if we were back in the days when RS made DLC for single-player stuff. I would love to have another Undead Nightmare where you play as Sadie Adler (my favorite character in the game). Charles would be number two. Javier was my second favorite until he sided with Dutch. For me that was the biggest betrayal.

Finally solved the Serial Killer and had the run in with the couple on the pig farm. Good times!

I think I'm getting close to the end of chapter 2. I've done quite a few missions and just talked with John to set up the mission to steal an oil wagon to set up eventually robbing a train.

Overall I give this game an 8.5/10

+
outstanding visuals
wonderful dialogue
an enjoyable story
likable protagonist

-
game somewhat lags in the middle of the story
a little sad and anti-climactic once you realise what's going to happen
prefer the old dead eye system
online mode

The game itself connects really well to Red Dead 1. The epilogue while long and somewhat tedious answers a lot of questions and ties up loose ends. I easily got my monies worth. It's a great game for sure but I'm not in the camp for game of the year. At times it was a little dull and the missions became pretty repetitive after awhile. Regardless, the polish of this game puts Fallout76 to shame. Rockstar shows why they are in another class when it comes to publishers. While I won't say game of the year it's definitely going to be in the top three. Of that I have no doubt.

Pretty much the same, though I might go as high as 9/10. Like you said, going between Fallout 76 and RDR2 is mind-blowing. The optimization of RDR2 is ridiculously as it rarely ever stutters and looks so amazing. A technical marvel compared to the technical hell of Fallout 75 and even Fallout 4.

I hope there is some single-player DLC to come. Still plan on playing it for the hunting/fishing and exploring the nooks and crannies.
