View Full Version : Meet Your 2015 Arkansas State Red Wolves

gschwendt
12-07-2015, 11:12 PM
After a very poor 2014, Arkansas State looks to make drastic strides to improve. Bringing in two young QBs should immediately make an impact on the offense that has two stars ready to shine in HB White and WR Pascal. Defensively, the group should be even better with some holes filled by shifting some players around that appear better than last year's counterparts. In all, 2015 should see much better results than last year but how much improvement will depend on how fast the team can gel together.

Without further ado, here's your 2015 Arkansas State Red Wolves.

With Quarterback being the clear weak link in the Arkansas State offense, the Red Wolves' coaches went out and found the best they could. That's where incomers Kevin Pino and Drew Fernandez step in. Pino has the best arm on the team and has enough speed to keep an option hand-off from time to time, however Fernandez is much more mobile and is a constant threat to run. Coaches are unsure whether Pino or Fernandez will get the starting job so they'll have to battle it out in Spring ball. The other will likely take a redshirt year. Last year's starter, Chambers, saw that he would not see any further playing time in his career and decided to transfer to an FCS school.

The Runningback position is the clear strength of the offense. With White & Turner, both starters from 2014, returning to fill out the backfield again, look for the Red Wolves to continue to pound the rock and bust the occasional big play. Behind the two of them, things become a bit murky as there are some solid players but no true standouts. At Fullback, coaches have moved over former Offensive Lineman Pierre Hughes. Hughes has good athleticism for a OL but doesn't quite have the strength to play in the trenches. Instead, he'll be leading the way for White & Turner when called upon.

At receiver, Pascal was the clear favorite in 2014 hauling in 49 catches though only 2 TDs. He returns but also gets some much needed support in stud Trey Quinn who sat out last season due to transfer. Blake Mack should also see significant catches this season after redshirting last year due to disciplinary reasons. Coaches are hopeful that the additions at QB will allow this group to flourish in 2015. The rest of the receivers on the depth chart can make some catches, but none really standout among the rest. Coaches are excited about the future of JUCO WR Allen Hendrix but he will redshirt for a season to eventually take over the role that Pascal leaves next season.

While Leaphart was used more as an H-Back/blocking Tight End, Morehead & Harrison are better as receiving targets. That probably won' t change the Red Wolves offense drastically, but they could combine to get a more targets than Leaphart. As well, you may see them in the same formation from time to time.

At offensive line, Arkansas State lost bookend Tackles in Clark & Jackson. To replace them, coaches will be shifting G Devin Mondie to RT and added JUCO Keith Glover for the LT. Inside, Joseph Bacchus earned the starting role for LG during spring ball when coaches found he had unprecedented speed for OL which will allow him to get out in front in pulling situations. Opposite him will be Cameron Davis who saw only limited playing time in 2014 but will replace starter Jared McCoy. At Center, Brad Sharpe proved that he wasn't quite ready to start and as a result, coaches are going to allow him to redshirt to improve. Replacing him will be Jhamal Bell who is capable but will need to show improvement in the offseason.

The Defensive Line is a solid group combined. So much so, that DE Ja'Von Rolland-Jones was able to move to the ROLB position. Replacing him at LE will either be veteran Caleb Caston or possibly the youngster in Nick Jones. Caston is more well-rounded, however Jones has very high upside that could allow him to cause chaos in the backfield. In the middle, at DT will be four year starter Chuks Ota. Opposite him at NT will be Freshman weight-room stud Manny Drew. At RE, former DT Clifford Thomas moves outside to help out in run defense to keep blockers off of the LBs.

With the graduation of ROLB Xavier Woodson, coaches weren't able to sign his replacement in recruiting. Instead, during spring ball, they tried out DE Ja'Von Rolland-Jones at ROLB. He seemed a natural with all around abilities and will be an excellent compliment to MLB Kyle Wallace in the 4-2-5. Wallace led the team in tackles last season and should be even better in 2015. Behind the starting pair are a mix of talent with the undersized Khari Lain being the most capable. As well, JUCO signee Xavier Reed will see some time in certain packages as he has explosive speed rushing off the edge. Coaches are also excited about the future of the fearsome foursome Freshmen that all signed this year.

Without question, the best player on the team is Sophomore CB Donte Jackson. Jackson is practically perfect in coverage but also has incredible ability to play the football and peel off of blocks. He'll be a monster for the Red Wolves. Opposite him will be three year starter Blaise Taylor who is solid in his own right. Free Safey Brandon Young had a very good Freshman season with 52 tackles. He returns to play centerfield for the Red Wolves. At Strong Safey, Hunter graduates leaving big shoes to fill but CB Charles Grant shifts down to the SS position and looks like he might be better than Hunter was; only time will tell. Opposite him, Wright returns after a solid year, particularly living in the opposing team's backfield.

At Kicker, William White was consistent when called upon making all 10 of his attempts. However, his leg wasn't nearly strong enough to be called upon in long distance situations. As a result, coaches sought out JUCO star James Davis who has a very powerful leg and should improve the Red Wolves chances in long kick situations. Punter Hunter Holmes returns for his senior season.

In 2014, Mays started the season as the primary return man however midway through the season, his injury allowed HB DeKeathan Williams a shot. From that point forward, Williams kept the starting job, though neither of them had exceptional results. In 2015, coaches will give several players a chance to perform and see who steps up the best. Hollingsworth would be solid with very similar skills as Williams but Porter is speedier, yet not as shifty. The wildcard is HB Hunter who has not only the speed but also the ability to elude defenders, however, coaches would prefer to redshirt him if possible.
