For Southern Miss, that would be an improvement from last year.

Some interesting results from the first night of football. UConn struggled mightily with Villanova. Utah State damn near blew it against Southern Utah. Was losing 9-5 at halftime and needed an 88 yard punt return for a touchdown with 5 minutes left in the game to pull a 12-9 win out of their asses. Western Kentucky scored a 14-12 win over Vanderbilt. Minnesota's defense did great in holding TCU to just 23 points and only 10 points at halftime. Arizona had a lot of trouble in their 42-32 win over UTSA. North Carolina gave South Carolina all they could handle. Central Michigan put up a hell of a fight against Oklahoma State.

Obviously, the big game tonight is going to be Washington-Boise State. Since I have to work, that game is going on the DVR so I can watch it later in full and not only see the second half when I get home from work.

Currently watching UNC-Charlotte's very first FBS game. They're currently up 10-0 on Georgia St. in a very unpacked Georgia Dome.

I was tempted to go Boise on my Pick 5, but too shaky of a number IMO.

Damn, what an ending to that Washington-Boise State game. I haven't watched it yet, but reading about the ending during sports this morning, the game tying 46 yard field goal ending up going wide right by inches in the final seconds. The ball damn near brushed the side of the upright as it went past it was so close to it. Damn that's a harsh way to lose.

I just watched it on Sportscenter. It was barely wide right.

Watched the 4th quarter and was really impressed with the True Freshman QB for Washington. The defense also dominated the second half, Boise could not handle the blitz The worst part was it should have never been a 46 yard field goal attempt. If I recall correctly they had a penalty and sack back to back and had a good chance to win it outright before that happened.

Now for the stat of the season. *Also an FCS victory over the FBS.

Army's first ever win in football came against Fordham back in 1891.
Since 1891, Fordham was defeated by Army in each of the four matchups, leading up to last night.
124 years later, Fordham upsets the Black Knights, "37-35!"

SmoothPancakes

Yeah, Washington screwed themselves leading up to that field goal. At the worst, it should have been under a 40 yard attempt.

And yep, it didn't take long for our first FCS beats FBS victim of the year. Rough start to the new season for Army.

Oregon State almost fell victim too. They only led Weber State 6-0 at halftime and 13-7 after three quarters. A 13 point fourth quarter eventually secured a 19 point victory for the Beavers, but it was a truly ugly win.

Yeah, Washington straight blew it. Watching the recorded game right now, Washington got to the Boise 19 yard line, then got tagged with a holding penalty and an 8 yard sack to push them out to the 37 yard line with 2nd and 26. They would only manage an 8 yard pass before spiking the ball on third down at the 29.

And then, the 46 yard game-tying field goal juuust wide right that G posted.

Washington just straight blew it by themselves with that stupid penalty and then giving up a sack with under a minute left. If they had kicked a 36 yard attempt, they probably make it and the game goes to overtime.

Yes, yes he is. Whoa big boy!

And down goes Kansas! Kansas was trying to set up for a game tying field goal, the QB fumbled the snap and was unable to spike the ball, resulting in the clock running out. South Dakota State scores the upset 41-38.

Defense is optional in Lubbock. Tech 28 Sam Houston 17, so we have the makings of another FCS upset.

Sweet Jesus this Arizona State-Texas A&M game is getting ugly. Sort of expected a war of points. Right now both teams have more turnovers than touchdowns! A&M with 2 interceptions and a fumble so far and Arizona State just lost their second fumble of the game. Currently 17-7 with 5 minutes left in the third.

Amen x1000! The SEC blowhards love to carry on about the mighty schedules of the SEC. If your schedules are so damn mighty, then drop the goddamn FCS games! I applaud the Big Ten (and I thought I heard the Pac-12 is following suit) in basically as an entire conference no longer scheduling FCS schools going into the future to raise the level of scheduling and play among the entire conference. SEC will never do that.

I don't know why? There are some really good FCS teams out there. E Washington is playing fairly well at Oregon. If you schedule an FCS team that was in the playoffs the year before, they are not cupcakes. You have IDAHO on your schedule. They have won five games total in the last four seasons.

We also schedule 6-8 years in advance, which iirc, Idaho was winning around 7 games a year. There's no reason to schedule fcs teams when there are 120-some other schools in fbs. The only exception is if your opponent pulls out a year in advance.

The addition of Idaho, Arkansas State and New Mexico (2016) points to a bit of a departure in USC's scheduling philosophy. The Trojans have traditionally played more challenging out-of-conference opponents.

We did play Idaho a few years ago. Which is why I thought it was a continuation of the series. Again, when a big opponent pulls out a couple years in advance, there are plenty of other teams out there. I'll give Oregon a pass since EWU has the third best record of fcs teams in the past 4 years. But for most fcs teams that the sec plays, they're barely better than division 2. What challenge is there when your 6th string wins 76-3?

Arkie state was impressive last night, even though the score didn't reflect it. Their starting defense really got after Kessler, sacking him I think 5 times, should have been a few more even. Very aggressive game plan and they were able to get penetration in our line.

Offensively, Knightin was terrible (sorry), only going 8-23 against no pass rush from us. Rbs Warren Wand and Michael Gordon are a bright spot for you guys. Wand is holy crap fast and Gordon could be on an NFL roster someday. I'm not a talent expert by any means but Gordon passes the eye test NFL scouts look for.

Good game Arkie State.

Good game Arkie State.Yeah... that about sums it up. Knighten was terrible last night. Not sure if jitters or offensive line not holding up but aside form running, he didn't get it done. He's better than that, but even last year in a record-setting year, he was inconsistent most of the time. We were excited to see Tabary get some time... he's likely the future starter whether this season or next.

We're definitely excited about our defense, especially after last night. If the offense can get it together this week, we might be able to knock off Missouri at home next weekend.

I'd be surprised if Gordon made it to the NFL... he is very talented but I just don't think he has everything he needs. Never know though, Alfred Morris had a moderate college career and turned into an NFL back.

Like I said, on paper, clearly obvious it's a spaceship. On the field though, it has an extremely rough shape of a spaceship, but also a distinct shape along the lines of a wang and balls. What screwed it up on the field was the people between the 10 and 20 yard lines. They got too spaced out and the bottom of the ship took on a bit of a nutsack appearance.

That, and the whole "leading point" of the "ship" going straight into the Jayhawks' mouth like an intergalactic blowjob didn't help the image of what the band was trying to do.
