View Full Version : PH'15: Season 1 Recruiting

I know this is only week 1, but I'm making a commitment to myself to do a better job of posting my recruiting this OD. Maybe not all of them, but the highlights at least.

Me, too....I've been slacking

I'm very frustrated that several of you followed the exact same strategy that I did ... yet others were more willing to put points in for Week 1 than I was, so I'm wayyyyyyy behind on players I could have been remotely competitive on.

Then again, Kansas recruiting is going to be ridiculously hard anyway.

Lol, no, nothing wrong.

Four user teams finally crack into the recruiting success category, as up until this week no user team had actually signed any players. Arkansas State is kicking all of our asses, with SMU, NC State and Kansas also signing players.

For my part of that sentence, Kansas signed :2star: offensive tackle Dan West, who is rated 76 OVR. He lacks SPD (61) and AGI (62), but will be a bruiser at the point of attack, with 81 PBK, 80 RBK and 78 IBL.

Dan is only a :2star: because he is, naturally for my recruiting, a JUCO JR. I hope to redshirt him last season and then have him take over one of the starting tackle positions in 2015.

I can't get a commit

Way my schedule worked out didn't have many early/middle of the season chances for visits. Think Week 9 or 10 is my earliest visit date. Or Weeks 1-4 lol

Hopefully some guys jump on board

JeffHCross
08-02-2015, 03:56 PM
I've yet to have a visit. West was just a bunch of points poured on early in the year.

skipwondah33
08-02-2015, 04:08 PM
I've put 500 into the same group of guys from the beginning. Still losing on a few of them too...by quite a bit.

The visits have all been their 1st which doesn't help with bonus points. By the time they actually visit they will have committed to other schools lol

psusnoop
08-02-2015, 08:46 PM
My visits are around week 9, not good at all. Hope something breaks soon.

JeffHCross
08-02-2015, 10:09 PM
Week 9 is all of mine too. I think it will probably cost me two or three guys. Should've stuck with my original Week 7 plan.

skipwondah33
08-02-2015, 11:46 PM
In the next 7-8 weeks I'll only have 3 chances for visits

So I have all mine coming for Week 10. Hope that's a big week, need every last one of the guys coming.

G got my #2 target to commit. Was going to use him at RB since I won't have one on roster come next season lol

Offensive Line is a big target for the Red Wolves and Sharpe is an excellent signing in that category. With very good blocking skills, he could compete for a job early on but coaches would prefer to redshirt him for a year so that he can put in some work in the weight room.

With the upcoming graduation of QB Fredi Knighten, Arkansas State coaches were hoping to find a QB that could come in and compete right away. While Lawson isn't completely ready to start, he will certainly push for playing time as a true freshman. Depending upon spring practice, coaches will determine whether Lawson will hit the field early or wait a year to work on his throwing accuracy.

Lawson received no other offers.

HB
:3star:
#61ATH
While most scouts projected Turner as a LB in college (rated 66OVR), Arkansas State coaches immediately saw Turner as a runningback. Right away, coach Gschwend saw images of his former HB Isaac Gordon who rumbled through defenders.

While Turner doesn't have the bulk that Gordon did, he does match his ability to barrel through the offensive line. Add in a bit more speed and agility and Turner's abilities may prove better than Gordon's.

With the upcoming graduation of HB Michael Gordon, look for Turner to likely see playing time as a true freshman as a change-of-pace back for Johnston White.

Other offers:
BYU, Memphis, Florida Atlantic, Ohio

For comparison, here's Gordon as a true freshman side-by-side with Turner:

Sucks couldn't him in any earlier but don't think it would have mattered either.

Think I had him coming Week 10 against Washington.

While not very flashy skills-wise, Hughes does come with excellent size as a defensive lineman. Coaches project him as a 5-technique at the next level, however he'll have to greatly improve his strength in order to find the field early.

Look for Hughes to redshirt his first year and then after that, play as a relief role until he improves enough.

Like Hughes, Jones doesn't come in as a flashy signing, however coaches have seen his game film and see that he could make an easy transition to the defensive end position. With good speed, strength, and finesse moves, he could turn into a monster at the position.

Due to his position change, coaches plan to redshirt him for a year but expect him to see significant playing time his second season.

Just like the rest of the signings this week, Cook joins Arkansas State as a project. He's nowhere ready to start, but coaches do see his upside with great ability to wrap up and make the tackle. Aside from that, he's an all-around solid player; it will just time for him to get up to speed to see playing time.

Cook will redshirt his first season and then likely see most of his playing time on special teams until later in his career.

Brown comes in as a tweener at either a Strong Safety or Outside Linebacker. His speed and strength say linebacker but his coverage and block shedding skills say Safety. Coaches plan to evaluate him come fall camp to determine where he fits.

No matter what position he plays, he'll almost certainly redshirt his first year but then expect him to find the field in some capacity after that.

With four defensive backs graduating after this season, DB was a key priority for the Red Wolves. While three of those graduate from the Cornerback position, one Free Safety graduates and another likely to move over to Strong Safety. That left a key opening for starter at Free Safety that Whitehead will fill nicely. With very good speed, he'll be a very good centerfielder in the Red Wolves defense.

With the lack of depth in the secondary, Arkansas State coaches weren't able to run their usual two-SS defensive scheme. With the addition of Brown and the shuffling of some positions, coaches feel confident that they'll be able to use more of that scheme. However, coaches are also interested in seeing what Brown can do as an Outside Linebacker.

As a SS, expect Brown to contribute as a true freshman but as an OLB he would redshirt for a year.

With the upcoming graduation of Kicker Luke Ferguson, Kicker was certainly a need a White fills that well. He doesn't have the big boot that the coaches were hoping to find, but he does come in with good accuracy and decent leg strength.

White will start as a true fresman.

With Arkansas State graduating 2 of it's top 3 WRs, a void needed to be filled for a solid possession receiver and Porter fits the bill. With possibly the best hands on the team this coming season, he'll almost certainly find the field as a true freshman.

Porter received no other offers.

Tight End was another position of need this season and while the Red Wolves have their sights on another target as a potential starter, Harrison was targeted as a supplement either for next season or for the future. Coaches plan to redshirt him his first season so that he can work on his blocking skills. After that, he'll likely be a career backup.

Harrison received no other offers.
