Horizon: Zero Dawn features a full day/night cycle & weather systems. Main character is called Aloy

CLW
06-16-2015, 09:16 AM
Horizon Zero Dawn is set in a lush, beautiful open world where nature has reclaimed the ruins of a forgotten civilization. It is a world where mankind is not the dominant species, and highly advanced machines sit at the top of the food chain. You play as Aloy, a young outcast from a tribal society, who has learned to hunt the machines. Intent on unraveling the many mysteries that surround her, Aloy embarks on a quest that will lead her to discover her own destiny.
Along the way, Aloy will face off against an entire menagerie of machines – some traveling in herds, others roaming in solitude, all of them presenting a formidable danger. You will need to learn their behaviors, attack patterns and weak points in order to survive. You must use the beautiful environments to your advantage, and employ stealth, agility, and cunning to approach your prey unseen.

Of course, you won’t be hunting unarmed in Horizon Zero Dawn. Aloy is capable of combining natural materials with machine parts to turn them into ingenious weapons, ammunition, traps, and tools. By cleverly using the right items at the right moment, you can exploit weak points and bring down even the largest machines. Unfortunately, the most dangerous machines aren’t necessarily the biggest…

Horizon Zero Dawn is scheduled for a 2016 release, and we’ll have additional details for you in the coming months. Be sure to follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook to stay up to date on the latest news! In the meantime, we’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Game in works for 5 Years

1000 years post "event" - human dominance is now a myth

Part of game is trying to figure out what happened

Aloy had to take out little dinosaur b/c it would alert the others

Machines to characters are just part of nature like we see animals

Bow has different types of ammo - also ability to tie robots/dinosaurs down

the dinosaurs are also weaponized

Harvesting/RPG elements (but didn't give much info)

Open World RPG

No Online - single player only

Other Humans/Tribes running around too

Yeah I got the impression that it is a single player only experience from the interviews I have seen.

It would be a compelling idea though if you could have a "small" number of friends form a "tribe" and explore together and war with other CPU "tribes" and of course the robot dinosaurs.

88% on metacritic after 68 reviews so far. Very impressive. I've read it's more fun to battle the machines than humans but overall this is a game that will take about 30 hours and more if you want to collect everything. I did read it's easy to miss some great side quests if you just look at the map and don't explore.

Played 2 hours today during nap time on my PS4 Pro and LG 65" OLED in 4K. OMFG it is the most beautiful game I have ever seen. Combat is fun and I haven't really even exited the "tutorial" section yet and I'm having a blast doing some side quests/errands and just running around.

Haven't noticed the issue with the right stick controller that Rudy mentioned but I'm playing pretty stealthy right now.

The only thing I've noticed (and its in allot of reviews) is some of the dialog scenes the facial expressions (particularly in the eyes) looks odd/off. This is common in allot of open world games its noticeable but it's not the worst i've ever seen in an open world game.

Loving it so far and right now I have very little doubts its a Top 5 game all-time for me and I'll be 100% this bad boy and just taking my sweet time with it because its going to be a real treat.

Finally going to dig into this game. After playing For Honor for so long, which uses weighty and slower characters, this game feels like it's on crack when you move. The camera and characters move ultra fast. It's like playing Madden on super fast mode. Definitely an adjustment.

Going from an online fighter to a story based, offline game is different. I can go at my own pace. The graphics are excellent. I've seen most of this beginning from watching my kids. The first hour is very heavy on cut scenes and learning the world and your character's story. I'm still going to sneak some For Honor time in every morning though. Even if it's just to fill some daily orders for Steel.

The machines are dangerous. I'm playing on hard and holy crap. This is not a guns a blazing environment. It's scary and you have to be careful. I died a bunch at one part and gave up. I may have to drop to normal. I had read the game was on the easy side but I'm not so sure.

JB or others, what difficulty you using and how does it feel? I normally use Normal like I would on Uncharted and maybe I should drop down.

I am quite bad at this game. I've died a lot and my kids were laughing at me. Dropped down to normal. I would prefer a mini map as opposed to a Skyrim map indicator. In the snow I can't see my reticule. The first hard dinosaur I died a ton. Finished the Proving (which was quite underwhelming given the build up) and I'm dying a ton after this. The story is very interesting though. Still very early in the game. I'm just getting started.

Stealth is your friend. This is a "thinking man's" game. What I do before every encounter: (1) find tall grass to hide; (2) use my focus to see what all i am up against and figure out how to exploit the enemies weakness(es); (3) stealth around and take out as many as I can or lay a ton of wire traps to shock them into stunned state when its time to fight.

I've only died 3 times thus far (all were early on before I started playing slow) but I'm playing on the default/normal. This game just isn't made for shoot up the dinosaurs - at least not yet at some point I may up the difficulty level if I become to powerful.

I can see why the game gets great reviews. For some reason I don't have this great urge to rush and play it though. Maybe I'm a bit burnt out on UC4 and Tomb Raider. Even Uncharted wasn't as exciting as the initial games, even though the game was good and I'm glad I played it.

I think part of the issue may be this game is more stealth based and that may keep the excitement down too. I still think this game moves a bit too fast. I enjoyed the combat a lot more in Uncharted. I kind of suck at combat when it happens now. I die quite a bit and when I do succeed there isn't a feeling of satisfaction right now. More like, let's move on to the next quest and check out the story. Maybe as I get more weapons I can be more strategic but the combat isn't impressing me at the moment. Still very early and I only have two weapons (Bow and tripcaster plus fire arrows).

Well, after having this sitting on the shelf for a month and a half, after finally beating Ghost Recon: Wildlands getting some time after work at least a couple days a week, and taking a break momentarily from Friday the 13th after plowing nearly 50 hours into in just over a week (plus the group of 3 to 10 people I usually play with haven't been on at the same times lately), I finally got a chance to dive into this last night.

Put a good three or so hours into it last night and have so far put a other 2 or 3 hours into it today. Just got past the Proving and about to head out into the wild by myself for the first time and head for Meridian.

But so far, I am loving this game. It's taken some getting used to since it's definitely a different style of gameplay with metal robot enemies, a bow and arrow and a spear as your primary weapons. But I'm enjoying it! I can't wait to see what's ahead of me as I venture out into the true open world portion of the game.

I had no expectations to like this game and didn't follow it at all pre-release.

That said, after the glowing reviews I decided to get it and I'm glad I did. I beat it in less than a week's time (which is saying something considering its length) and really enjoyed it.

I'd call it similar to Witcher 3 in its depth and experience. If you liked that, it's definitely worth giving this game a shot.

Looking forward to possible DLC expansions.

Yeah I'm roughly 50 hours in and all that's left for me is to find some missed items, complete the final 2 story missions and the trials/tests.

I'd say its one of my Top 10 games of all-time right now and most certainly my #1 open world RPG of all-time.

I'm going to try playing this again later. I was disappointed in it. I might drop down to easy so I can just play through the story and finish it. Too stealth based and too many rpg options for what I thought it would be.

SmoothPancakes

Based on the save files, I'm just over 21 hours into the game. I'm still early in the story because I have been heavily exploring the map and doing side quests. I have yet to even get to the Carja Border fort Daytower for the main story.

The farthest settlements I've reached is the Banuk Encampment for to the northeast and currently at Hunter's Gathering when I called it a night last night.

But, the time has been well spent. I've entirely explored the eastern third of the map, collecting every artifact, Banuk figure and metal flower, visiting every campfire, discovering every machine site, completing two main quests (the War Chief storyline), 5 side quests, 3 errands, 2 bandit camps, 1 Tallneck, 2 hunting grounds, the Sigma Cauldron and 3 corrupted zones.

Also have 2/3rds of the machine catalogue completing, having discovered and a number of times tangled with and killed Watchers, Striders, Grazers, Scrappers, Redeye Watchers, Broadheads, Lancehorns, Longlegs, Sawtoothes, Shell-Walkers, Fire Bellowbacks, Chargers, Stalkers, Glinthawks, Corruptors, Ravagers, Tallnecks and Corrupted machines.

Also almost have the first set of collectibles complete, just need to find one more ancient vessel and one more metal flower to finish Set 1. So far sitting at 29.17% game completion according to the progression menus.

Hmm, I think I've done the bandit camps out of order that it was expected most would do them. Because I put off the main story until I had completely explored the eastern part of the map, my order of bandit camps has gone Devil's Thist (level 5 or whatever level it was), Hollow Fort (level 25, cleared while I was level 20), Two Teeth (level 9) and just now Gatelands (level 12).

This is also reflected in the XP with 5,000 from Devil's Thirst, 15,000 from Hollow Fort, 7,500 from Two Teeth and 10,000 from Gatelands.

But, I guess if I was able to handle a level 25 Hollow Fort while only level 20, I should be able to handle a level 12 Gatelands and any future camps while currently at level 25.

I haven't had too much trouble. I play heavily stealth, so I do a lot of crouching, slow moving from stealth flower patch to stealth flower patch (whatever the hell those tall grassy flowery things are called) and do a lot of headshots with my precision arrows and hardened arrows.

It also helps I was able to buy the Shadow Carja Hunter Bow, the Shadow Carja Tripcaster and the Shadow Carja Sharpshot Bow (among the best weapons in the game) as soon as I reached Daytower, making one shot kills almost every time against humans.

Hollow Fort was tough, probably because I was 5 levels below the Fort level and only had plain Carja weapons, so it took a lot of fire traps and shock/explosion tripwires to thin the amount of bandits, to where I could go in and finish the rest off via bow and spear.

So far this game has exceeded my expectations which were high to begin with. 15 hours in and taking my sweet time, just getting ready to leave the first area. You can definitely feel where it takes from the last two Tomb Raiders. From some of the traversal methods to the combat with the bow and very similar in regards to crafting/leveling. Also some nods to Far Cry. Oddly I have found the spear to be the easiest way to take down the early enemies, machine or human. Going 50/50 stealth so far. I like all the options you have in regards to trapping the machines so I see myself going more stealth and utilizing them over brute force. Story is pretty good so far and I like playing as Aloy and the little quips she utters as you are just scavenging for stuff.

The glinthawks are tough. I have found the best weapon is to just shoot them in the chest plate/chest area repeatedly with the tearblast arrow which eventually (3-4 shots) causes it to freeze/crash and then you just smash the living hell out of it.

The Sharpshot Bow is my go to but I stuck all three slots with damage (purple mods) varying % but working on stacking it out as I just got the Shadow version yesterday. Currently at 167 damage per shot. Stack three arrows, hit a weak spot and the rest is history. Between the 3 arrows perk and faster knockdowns with heavy melee I am pretty damn invincible all of a sudden. Of course neither of those things were really working for the stuff that flies at a distance. ;)

The graphics team really deserves a round of applause for some of the best lighting and scenery in a game. In an open world environment to boot. Uncharted 4 was beautiful but this game raised the bar. If the Naughty Gods want to keep that moniker they really need to bring it with The Last of us 2 and open up the environment even more than they did with UC4.

Yeah for me the toughest fight is with Stalkers. The best method I found is to surround myself with shock lines shoot them with shock bombs have them come at me run into the shock line and then just bombard them with arrows. Of course when there is a pack of them its really tough as you eventually run out of the shock wire to protect you.

Yeah I'm roughly 50 hours in and all that's left for me is to find some missed items, complete the final 2 story missions and the trials/tests.

Finished it right at fifty hours but still had a lot of side missions and trials to do. Did not care for the trials and glad I did not spend a ton of time with them because the rewards (the three weapons) suck compared to how much time you would invest. Going New Game + playing on Hard and plan to complete all side-missions and find all the trinkets, etc. Will do each trial once just to say I did them all. Nice that we get to keep all our goodies, especially the shield-weaver. Also pre-ordered the DLC because it looks pretty badass.

Funny thing is I completed the game, played fifty hours and had no idea that you do not have to pull the arrow all the way back to get full power. Just a quick flick does the exact same damage. That does seem like an oversight and kinda irked me because it defies logic and it is the primary weapon in the game.

I haven't been able to play in a week or two (haven't even turned on the PS4), but I just have the main missions and the Xi and Zeta Cauldrons to do.

I am well over 50 hours, but I've explored literally every inch of the map, completed every tall neck, every bandit camp, every corrupted zone, every metal flower, ancient artifact and viewpoint, finished the machine catalogue, did every side mission and errand that I could find.

Where I left off, I just got done with the deathbringer and climbing Faro Tower mission. Heading to the Grave-Hoard next (for an idea of where I am in the main story).

Last I remember, I'm something like level 48 or 50, have all but 3 or 4 skills purchased. And this game is damn fun! I will happily buy any and all DLC day one that they release for this game and if I could, I would already have HZD 2 pre-ordered.

Slight spoiler relating to this quest.

Did you get the power cell? Because I missed it the first time and had to climb it again, which is a much bigger PITA without having the story/navigation tool help move you around it.

Am I the only one that has finished the story here? You guys know I hate the Sci-fi stuff but this was a really good story and the ending...

Yeah, I thankfully had stumbled upon something related to the cells and knew it was up there before I started the mission, so I made sure to grab it first chance I got.

And you may very well be. Like I said, I just haven't had the time to play the last couple weeks (would likely be done by now otherwise) and because I'm an exploration freak, I couldn't resist exploring every inch of the map and do every errand and side mission I could before I had even walked into Meridian for the first time.

But even still having a number of missions to go yet, I really am enjoying this game. Now that I've learned what I have from the Faro mission and have begun to gain an understanding of what happened to bring about the downfall of the metal cities and previous civilization, it's all starting to slowly click into place now and I'm really impressed with the story and the level of detail of background details when it comes to the texts on the metal flowers, the background story on the viewpoints, and the various data points you come across.

Like I said, they may not have even started planning to begin thinking of working on a Horizon Zero Dawn 2, but if I could pull a Spaceballs with instant cassettes, I'd already have that damn thing already pre-ordered today, and I haven't even finished the story of the first one yet.

The only others I recognized instantly were the Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel, Bryce Canyon and Red Rocks Amphitheater.

Just hit Level 50 and slowly starting to replace Shadow weapons with the newly added Adept weapons. Only difference is one more mod slot so far but I want to be fully geared up for the DLC.

DLC coming in November 7th.

I just Platinumed the game tonight. Came out of nowhere and was pure luck because I had no idea the training dummies were tied to an achievement. Missed it on my first run. Beat it on Normal, Hard and now going for Ultimate difficulty. Currently Lvl 50 plus 35 ghost levels. I hope those somehow carry over to the DLC.

This is what I’m currently playing. Even though I bought it, my wife said she’d buy the DLC if I saved it for Christmas so I did. So far, I’m really liking it. I haven’t made it to my Proving yet but I think that’s my next story based mission. Right now, I’m just doing s lot of combat training with the basic enemies,

I'm finding a lot of games I bought recently I haven't liked a great deal. But there some games that surprised me in a nice way to balance that out.

So far, I really do. Definitely a change of pace from Uncharted.

I forgot where I saw it but I recall someone saying they thing HZD had a graphical edge on UC4. I think the exact opposite. Don’t get me wrong, this game looks amazing but UC4 beats this in terms of character graphics and animations. These faces are a little too plastic-y looking whereas the UC4 graphics were so detailed that I could see stubble on Nathan Drake’s face. It’s really a non-issue though. This game is still great to look at.

HZD is quite a bit different from UC4. HZD is more stealth based and more open world while UC4 is a shooter with story. I do think UC4 was better looking but it's splitting hairs. I'd like to see HZD on a PS4 Pro.

Yeah, this is definitely an open-world, akin to Assassin’s Creed (another of my favorite series). UC:TLL is the most open the Uncharted series has ever been so it’s a nice transition into this.

The more I play, the more I realize that this is basically an Assassin’s Creed game at its core. No complaints as I’ve played and beaten them all from AC1-AC:Unity (that includes both Rogue and Liberation) and I own both Syndicate and Origins (the only 2 I haven’t played yet). So far, I have 0 complaints about this game.

I like this game but I’m not loving this game. The hunting trials are ridiculously hard and some of these enemies are a pain in the ass. I don’t mind there being difficult enemies but often they’re surrounded by too many easy ones and everything is on high alert too quickly. Plus, they’re weak spots are underneath them and are difficult to hit. The ones that are exposed take a bunch of hits. I’m wearing stealth clothes and feel I’m seen way to easily despite pretty much always attacking with arrows from a distance, crouched in high grass. I’ve had one too many frustrating “gang fights” thus far and I don’t think I’m 25% into it. Also, why do we have to spend points on skills that you’d think would be standard from jump, like, picking an item up while riding or....whistling.

Like I said, I like this game. It’s a well made game and I’m gonna finish it but it’s already out of GotY contention for me unless I’m a superhuman killing machine by the end.

What’s bad is that I’m playing on easy. [emoji38] 🤦🏾*♂️

I like stealth games. What I don’t like in this game is how easily I’m discovered and how once 1 enemy “sees” me (I’m always hidden when I attack), I have to fight 5 or 6 enemies who all have ridiculous attacks.

I can’t begin to tell you just how much more fun I’ve had since changing the difficulty. The game sets up some ridiculous encounters like 2 giant mole robots (1 is more than enough) or Thunderjaw surrounded by 2 Sawteeth. Eliminating that frustration made the game infinitely more playable. And there’s only 1 trophy dependent on difficulty so you’re not even punished for having it easier.

I bought it again. But it was annoying that even though I started a New Game (last played it in April 2017) it skips the intro scene. Game just cuts to "6 years later..." and I thought I messed something up. But after googling it, the game just automatically skips the intro in all modes if it thinks you've ever seen it. Very dumb since they use "square" to skip any cut scene you want. I ended up watching it on YouTube but you can also go into the Extra section in game and find it.

I'm enjoying the beginning of the game again. Playing on Easy has been nice. I can be stealthy but still get in some trouble with the dinosaurs and not die.

I still maintain this game does not teach the player all of the mechanics that well. It opens up too many things too quickly. Very quickly you can get a bunch of different weapons, crafting, RPG trees, trade shops etc and it's still a bit overwhelming. I thought God of War did a much better job of slowly introducing all of their features so you never felt clueless about anything.

I still think the frame rate is a bit shaky and/or the movement a bit quick. I’d love to see this on a Pro and if the enhanced mode smooths it out. Game looks great except for the teeth. They have some weird colouring or shine to them. I thought the same thing the first time I played. I am looking forward to advancing the story as I always thought it was intriguing and done well.

I have a Pro and I don’t recall any framerate issues. I do need to finish the endgame though so I’ll have to check on that. I also don’t remember a teeth problem (it’s been a really long time since I’ve played) but I remember everyone being plastic-y and shiny looking.

I'm enjoying the game. Playing on Easy has been a lot more fun. That said, I just did a level 18 mission where I'm level 25 and I was struggling a little lol. Easy = Normal imo.

I've got the Shadow weapons but I really only use my main bow and mix in the Tripcaster when I'm up against big machines. I will use the Sharpshot bow a little (probably should more) and I don't have an upgraded Rattler but I do like that for a lot of bandit, close range fighting. I pretty much never use the sling or bombs/traps. I don't bother with potions other than health. This game has so many types of things it's overwhelming at times so I have just enjoyed playing on Easy and using a simpler approach.

The story just had a big reveal for me so I am very interested in what happened.
Aloy's mom is shown in holograms from hundreds of years ago, working on the Zero Dawn weapon to fight back against the machines. I still don't know why the machines are dinosaurs or how the world got destroyed or why they are after Aloy. It's a Terminator story at heart imo.

I've reached level 32 now. Resource management is a pain in the ass. I'm fully maxed out and still running out of room but too scared to sell off a bunch of stuff lol. I dumped a lot of Ridgewood and sell some minor/green parts although with me loving fire arrows lately I'm nearly out of blaze.

The last story/main mission took a LONG time. I swear it took me almost 2 hours to fully complete. Got the trophy for discovering the truth and found out only 41% of gamers got that far. Just sort of confirms my feeling that this game is LONG. Probably too long for most people to finish. At least you can't complain about there not being enough content for an offline game. I just finished the 5th last main mission so four left to go. They do jam a ton of stuff in this game - I still don't have one weapon I like because I can't get a rabbit bone. Per Wiki, there are 22 main missions (which can be fairly long), 22 side missions, 5 tribal missions, 14 errands, 6 bandit camps, 5 tallnecks, 5 hunting grounds, 4 cauldrons, 11 corrupted zones (plus tutorials). Frozen Wilds has 5 main missions, 4 side missions, 7 errands, 1 tallneck, 1 cauldron. Holy crap that's a lot.

Well I completed the game! Finished the final boss and of course the cut scene at the end leads to the inevitable sequel. Huge amount of action at the end. I couldn't imagine having to beat the final boss and fight on Normal or Hard lol.

Overall this was a good game. I am glad I gave it a second chance and my frustration with the difficulty the first time and with not realizing how stealth based, RPG based and how different the combat would be. Tons of content in the game - a bit too much imo. But it was a fun ride and I'm glad I played it. Will have to do the Frozen Wilds yet. I still have a tallneck to unlock a map area as I didn't discover everything on the map but I did do the majority of stuff.

Now it's time for Tomb Raider! Will put Spidey on hold.

It’s a whole different game once you lessen the difficulty. It actually becomes fun.......outside of having to fight 2 of those worm things at once.

Like I said, I made it to the point of no return, where you have no choice but to go through endgame, so I turned around and went to The Frozen Wilds abs that’s where I stopped and never picked up again.
